Information Overload? Don't Panic! | Surviving Leadership Chaos | Scoop.it

Not a day goes by when I’m not asked about whether or not the social media bubble will finally burst. Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Foursquare, Pinterest, this all has to be too much right?

 

More often than not, I’m expected to assume the role of psychologist to either validate their digital existence or help individuals understand, and in some cases cope, with what is most often diagnosed as information overload.

 

This isn’t a new phenomenon by any means. The sensation of being overwhelmed by information has been linked to every media revolution. With every new innovation and the mass adoption of disruptive technology, the volume of information available to us grows exponentially.

 

With media now so pervasive and portable, information, of any focus, is available, on demand, and more importantly, resides in our hands to create and consume at will. We are, for better or for worse, always on. And this is both part of the problem and part of the solution for how we evolve as individuals and as an information society.

I reviewed the book, Information Diet,yesterday - http://www.bethkanter.org/info-diet/ it is excellent. He talks about curation as part of the solution, although it is framed as information literacy

Historically, leaders achieved their position by virtue of experience on the job and in-depth knowledge. They were expected to have answers and to readily provide them when employees were unsure about what to do or how to do it. The leader was the person who knew the most, and that was the basis of their authority.

Leaders today still have to understand their business thoroughly, but it’s unrealistic and ill-advised to expect them to have all the answers. Organizations are simply too complex for leaders to govern on that basis. One way for leaders to adjust to this shift is to adopt a new role: that of coach. By using coaching methods and techniques in the right situations, leaders can still be effective without knowing all the answers and without telling employees what to do.

Clearly, the best bosses, male or female, are the bosses who recognize their people the most.  In fact, findings from a recent global study by the Cicero Group show that 89% of employees who are recognized reported feeling a greater sense of drive and determination. And 81% felt a greater connection to the company. With this kind of data, maybe it’s time to stop analyzing chromosomes and leadership, and instead focus on measuring activities of leadership.

(From the article): Average leaders waste their anger by getting embroiled in drama-based debates fueled by blame. They get stuck wanting to prove they're right. Great leaders know this is a massive waste of time and energy. Though it might be fun for the ego to parade around its smarts, nothing of value is accomplished.


Instead of blaming others, great leaders learn from anger and become even better leaders.

 

Once leaders have felt, expressed and owned their anger, they then ask the question, "What is this anger here to teach me and us?" Anger is usually an invitation to set a boundary, stop doing something that is no longer of service, change direction, face what is not being faced or to say no.

 

Yes, it takes a minute to learn and a lifetime to master. What worthy skill isn't? The good news is, when you start shifting your relationship with anger, you'll see the results immediately.
