What makes a good leader different? Not the types who like to progress by pulling the legs of others to make them fall down and lag behind. By communicating with everyone and letting them know their importance, you are also signifying that you’re open to discussions and always willing to listen and accept when you’re wrong as well.

Principles to Remember 

 Do: Make a note of any patterns in your manager’s outbursts. Finding common causes can help you develop strategies for coping. Be situationally aware. Understand what kind of mood your boss might be in before approaching her with requests. Defuse a tense situation with some well-timed gratitude. 

Don’t: Take it personally. The boss is probably lashing out at something that has nothing to do with you. Swing back. Responding with an outburst of your own will only inflame the situation. Suffer in silence. If a bullying boss is affecting your work, bring it up with HR.

Most teams approach strategy development by looking in their rear-view mirror.

donhornsby's insight:
You can use the same approach as Kennedy used to create your own team or personal vision. Start the vision development by placing yourself in a future time. Then, from that place, articulate the outcomes and future state that you are committed to. Then think your way back from that future state to the present, in order to create your milestones and execution plan. So often teams try to derive realistic objectives by running numbers and trying to foresee all the circumstances that could affect their outcome. I strongly advise against that! Make sure your strategy development exercise is not merely an accounting exercise, informed by a bit of leadership. In fact, do it the opposite way. Make sure your exercise is a leadership exercise, informed by a bit of accounting.

My first exposure to the use of a “ruler statement” is one I will never forget.  The marketing manager of my former company presented his product plan

Once you have examined the importance, you can use a ruler statement to test the level of confidence in making the change. A desired change can be very important to your coachee, yet the coachee may not have confidence that it can be done. As with the “importance ruler”, always ask first why the coachee did not state a lower number. This will encourage the coachee (or employee) to express why they can do it which builds confidence. I use ruler statements as a regular tool in coaching. They are great facilitators for good coaching conversations.

Every great advance in leadership came from someone who found the nerve to simply say “no”—as a complete sentence, without any justification or explanation or apology. When you make judicious use of “no,” you set the priorities that allow you to say a bigger “yes” to the most compelling ideas and vision. If you’re serious about leadership, always remember that it has to come from deep inside. It takes courage, boldness, toughness, determination and audacity, as the saying goes: no guts, no glory.

The man who advised presidents from both ends of the political spectrum understood that it is the ordinary people whose concerns must matter. Gardner’s uncommon common touch allowed him to relate to everyman. He was far from the politico who so often fills the headlines and the television screen. John Gardner knew that humility was the key to leadership of the kind that produces enduring results. It’s a quality that appears often in his book On Leadership, in which he distilled his experiences in political life and compelled readers to think about what constitutes true leadership. The author was not afraid to mention humility as a necessary trait in leaders across the board. Neither was this emeritus professor of business ashamed to quote the Bible. With insight he wrote, “Jesus not only comforted the afflicted but afflicted the comfortable.”
