Servant leadership: A path to high performance

Many people believe great leaders are charismatic and have a commanding presence. Almost all leaders of high-performing firms that I studied had none of those traits.
Annette Schmeling's insight:

Edward Hess, University of Virginia, teaches an executive education course "Servant Leadership: A Path to Higher Performance. He highlights in this Washington Post article the DNA of high-performing companies.

Keeping your eye on the bigger goal of doing the right thing for the good of others and/or for the good of an organization is a central theme of servant leadership that Hess highlights. Instead of focusing on self, or the singular contributions that a person, team, or unit can make servant leaders strive to look at what we all have in common and values that really matter.

Courage Is Not the Absence of Fear

Courage Is Not the Absence of Fear | Servant Leader | Scoop.it
Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to act in spite of my fear. Here’s how I learned this invaluable lesson.

Via donhornsby
Annette Schmeling's insight:

"It is a bewildering thing in human life that the thing that causes the greatest fear is the source of greatest wisdom." C.G. Jung

Only the boldest among us can acknowledge the role that fear plays in our lives. Fear is the enemy; the Other is not your enemy. A person that can take a conscientious inventory to discern the divine design, and let go of the inordinate searches for connection and reassurance, will not be governed by fear and truly be able to respond to the needs of others.

(From the article): I learned an important lesson that day. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is the willingness to act in spite of my fear.

My people also learned an important lesson. They learned that I was willing to stand up for them, even at the expense of my own comfort. It drew us closer together as a team.

Frankly, I still find it difficult to be brave. I don’t consider myself to be a courageous person. But now having several of these experiences under my belt, it is a little easier. Now I just notice the fear, pull up my big boy pants, and lean into the situation.

The BioSync Team's curator insight, March 17, 2013 1:57 PM

Don't Make Assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

5 Reasons Why Servant Leadership Works

5 Reasons Why Servant Leadership Works | Servant Leader | Scoop.it

To be a servant leader requires that you let go of self-importance.

I have worked in my field for twenty eight years. I have served as a leader and have served under a number of leaders during that time. Some have been good while some have not.

Good, healthy leadership is out there but you have to look for it. I have learned just as much from the mistakes of those around me, as well as my own, as I have from the successes.

I have also had the privilege of working for some incredible servant leaders as well. One in particular I served with for almost ten years and to this day he is one of my closest friends.

He showed me what a servant leader looks like and has had a profound impact on my life. So I can tell you from experience that these five principles work.

Annette Schmeling's insight:

Humility, Passion, Unity, Servanthood, Thankfulness = winning combination. Built on connectedness, organic leadership, and wholeness, the "Butler Way" is not obsessed with the “bottom line.” Firmly rooted in core values and quality relationships matters is the final score that really matters.

Bill Flint Servant Leadership

Bill Flint Servant Leadership | Servant Leader | Scoop.it

Servant leaders have learned if you want to build relationships with your people, and help them grow you must “really get to know them.” Their goals, their talents and skills, their potential and how you as the leader can help them grow. For this to happen real communication needs to take place. Not just a hello in the morning or a once a year performance review.
