I don’t care how old you are — 17 or 70 — as a writer you can benefit from reading children’s stories.
Stories like Madeline, Interrupting Chicken, Henry’s Freedom Box, The Giving Tree, and I Took the Moon for a Walk.

Marketeers should all go back to reading childrens stories. They have to be compelling and well structured to keep the interest of a child - something adult fiction takes for granted,. Storytelling is an art form that should be practised and honed.

Games Are a Whole New Form Of Storytelling | peripheral labs

Games Are a Whole New Form Of Storytelling | peripheral labs | Serious Play | Scoop.it
Storytelling in games is a long debated topic. I believe I have the answers, and I believe stories in games are only going to get better.

Read the full article to find out how gaming is moving, and maybe even redefining, storytelling from a passive to interactive form.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s curator insight, November 24, 2013 6:44 PM

I'm not a gamer but have noticed many articles debating the ability of a game to tell a story.  It made me curious how story could be incorporated into this medium.  This article finally explained it in a way I can understand.  This excerpt provides an insight into the debate which it appears is about story transforming from a passive to interactive form.

"If we take a step back for a minute and look at storytelling in other mediums we notice something. Its different in every medium. Books, for example tell stories by describing situations and characters in a unique way that engages a persons imagination and lets them follow the story in a deep and meaningful way. Movies and television use completely different methods to tell stories, they rely on visuals to tell a story, however, books and television both have something in common. They are both forms of passive storytelling.

This is were games come in. Games have always fascinated me far more than any other medium of entertainment and art because of how many levels of interaction they have. They are interactive and visual, which create a whole new level of psychology that the player experiences. This however, in my observations, ruins the normal methods of storytelling. Dramatic arks for example are not as effective because the player has direct effect over the outcome of the game. The player could walk forward and trigger a cutscene with a plot twist, or they could walk around in circles, breaking the pacing of the story. This makes it much harder to tell a story."

So the shift from a passive form appears to be part of the issue.  But maybe it's also a fear on the author's part. If the "reader" becomes part of the story, and actually has the ability to rewrite the story, it also redefines the author's role and ownership.

ADULT PLAY THERAPY

ADULT PLAY THERAPY | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Toys, and play in general, are important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. The young use toys and play to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults. Adults use toys and play to form and strengthen social bonds, teach, remember and reinforce lessons from their youth, discover their identity, exercise their minds and bodies, explore relationships.
