Give killer presentations: Think like a writer

Give killer presentations: Think like a writer | Serious Play | Scoop.it
PowerPoint presentations are boring, but don't blame Microsoft. Instead, learn to communicate more effectively by thinking like a writer when you plan your speech.
Ariana Amorim's insight:

Main ideas here:

Most business presentations fail because they're based on bad assumptions. Here are some examples of those assumptions:

The audience cares about you and what you have to say. (They don't.)The audience is thinking about what you're saying. (They're not.)The audience can grasp the details of your complex slides on first exposure. (They can't, and they won't.)

A typical business presentation breaks down communication into subjects like these:

Our company.Our product.Our product's architecture.Our value proposition.

These might be the right categories to discuss if the people in the audience were passionately curious about you and your company. But they're not.

A good writer is more likely to break down the parts of communication into the categories that reflect how the human brain works, like these:

Mental images.Stories.Emotions.Information.

Through this article, you can learn more about how you can organize your presentation around these categories.

70 year old Creativity Technique That Is Still Relevant Today

70 year old Creativity Technique That Is Still Relevant Today | Serious Play | Scoop.it
An interesting 70 year old book is gaining popularity again in the creativity and innovation fields

Around the late 1930's, a creative Ad man named James Webb Young had a knock on his door from a manager who shared an epiphany that success in advertising comes from selling ideas not things. Despite the manager's insight, he had one problem, his team didn't know how to get ideas; they were stuck.  So, they came to the successful James Young for ideas on how to get ideas.  This encounter led to Young creating a little book called  A Technique for Producing Ideas. I recently came across it and was impressed to find some advice that is as relevant today as 70 years ago. I recommend you buy the book, but below I've picked out the key points you can use right away.

Ten Timeless Persuasive Writing Techniques

Ten Timeless Persuasive Writing Techniques | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Want to convince your readers to do something or agree with your point of view?

OK, that was a silly question. Of course you do.

Persuasion is generally an exercise in creating a win-win situation. You present a case that others find beneficial to agree with. You make them an offer they can’t refuse, but not in the manipulative Godfather sense.

It’s simply a good deal or a position that makes sense to that particular person.

But there are techniques that can make your job easier and your case more compelling. While this list is in no way comprehensive, these 10 strategies are used quite a bit because they work.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Ten persuasive writing strategies that can work for you:

Repetition

Reasons Why

Consistency

Social Proof

Comparisons

Agitate and Solve

Prognosticate

Go Tribal

Address Objections

KarmaTube: What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains

KarmaTube: What the Internet Is Doing To Our Brains | Serious Play | Scoop.it

"We are bombarded by information, thanks in large part to the internet and its allied technologies. But exposure to unlimited information is not the same thing as the ability to capture it as knowledge or synthesize it as understanding. "We are living in a state of perpetual distraction," says Nicholas Carr, "which crowds out the more contemplative, calmer modes of thinking." We need these quieter, less frenetic moments to think conceptually, critically, and creatively. This video argues that digital multitasking and cute cat videos are undermining the very thought processes that are the essence of our humanity".
