The 5 Rules of Storytelling Every Teacher Should Know about ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Serious Play | Scoop.it

"Now that you have such a good curated list of the best storytelling apps and tools how do you go about teaching your students to create good stories? A good story does have to abide by certain rules and these rules are learned through practice. Andrew Stanton, the Pixar writer and director behind both Toy Story and WALL-E, talks some of these rules  in his popular TED Talk, The clues to a great story."

YouTube Is Removing Annotations Option - Try This Instead

YouTube Is Removing Annotations Option - Try This Instead | Serious Play | Scoop.it
Earlier this week Google announced that the option to add annotations to your YouTube videos will be going away on May 2nd. This is sad news for many of us who used annotations to create interactive videos through the use of YouTube annotations.

Fortunately, the option to link your videos to other videos isn't completely disappearing from YouTube. You will still be able to use "end screens" to link to other videos and playlists within YouTube.

9 Creative Storytelling Methods

9 Creative Storytelling Methods | Serious Play | Scoop.it
When an author set out to tell a story in years past, he or she typically did so on paper, a typewriter or by typing at a computer.

But today, storytellers find imaginative ways to share their ideas with interactive and visual elements. On modern mediums like Twitter, Vine, YouTube and other mobile applications, storytellers are crafting tales in ways that would have been unfathomable a decade ago.

Offline, too, authors have begun rethinking the traditional concept of the book in ways both innovative and unorthodox. Might a story be better understood as a set of machine parts? How might destroying a book actually bring its messages to life?

Here are nine ways authors are revolutionizing the way stories are told.

Workshop dynamics - understanding and shaping the flow

Workshop dynamics - understanding and shaping the flow | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Isn’t it strange that you can deliver the exact same workshop materials with two different groups and one session will go like a dream and the other can feel like an endless nightmare? Same materials, same trainer, completely different outcomes.

The magic factor, of course, are the delegates themselves, their characters and the way they are behaving on the day. We have an opportunity to understand and get the best out of that behaviour rather than being at the mercy of it. I use David Kantor’s model of group dynamics shared in his great book Reading the Room as my guide.

John Dalziel's curator insight, March 26, 3:25 AM
Vibby is a very good tool that practitioners (and/or others) can use to highlight and share specific parts of videos.
Viewers will only see the cropped portion users sent and not the entire video.
This is especially useful to use with learners.
Instead of sharing the whole video users can highlight the parts they want them to see and send them over in the form of vibs. Vibby supports a wide variety of video hosting platforms including YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Facebook, Mobcrush and any publicly hosted HTML5 video format.
Vibs that users create can be open to the public for everyone to watch and comment on. Alternatively, users can unlist their vibs so that only those with the link can comment.
Users can also share their vibs via email, social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, a direct link, or embed them in their blog or website.
NOTE: YouTube has a relatively similar feature that allows users to crop and share specific parts of videos.

Work stories

Work stories | Serious Play | Scoop.it
People like hearing stories. If you can tell a pertinent story, your message has a far greater chance of lodging in the listener’s mind. Stories can be stories about you and your clients, or about other people’s clients, or be more metaphorical as are these:  Stories.

Below are some true stories—case studies, if you will—about actual clients and others, anonymised, which illustrate aspects of emotional intelligence in the workplace.

The User's Manual To Design Thinking Your Teaching (Infographic)

The User's Manual To Design Thinking Your Teaching (Infographic) | Serious Play | Scoop.it
What I love about Design Thinking is that it's flexible. There are teaching approaches out there that tell us what to do, but it makes more sense for every teacher to teach differently every year, because we each get different students.
Think about it. We don't treat all our friends and family the same. Our interactions with them are largely based on our experience of who they are and what makes them tick. Teaching is the same way. One size fits all approaches do not work.

The challenge is that, in the grand scheme of things, we only know our students for a short time. However, personalization of education is not a fad; it's a thing. So. let's use the Design Thinking Cycle (Empathy, Definition, Ideation, Prototyping, Testing) to improve Teaching, shall we?

Five tips for becoming a better public storyteller

Five tips for becoming a better public storyteller | Serious Play | Scoop.it
The STAGE System is a method of speech craft I created that puts your personal stamp on every presentation you give. It’s an acronym for style, truth, art, group, and energy and it serves as a checklist for every speech you give, whether it’s your first or your 500th. The STAGE System gives you a chance to pause and ask yourself who you want to be on stage. If you are naturally funny, how can you incorporate some humor into your talk? If you went through a life-changing experience, how can you tie that into your subject? If you love interacting with the audience, how can you make that a big part of your speech? By using the STAGE System as your guide, you build your talk so you are in your element and really shining on stage.
