Five tips for becoming a better public storyteller

Five tips for becoming a better public storyteller | Serious Play | Scoop.it
The STAGE System is a method of speech craft I created that puts your personal stamp on every presentation you give. It’s an acronym for style, truth, art, group, and energy and it serves as a checklist for every speech you give, whether it’s your first or your 500th. The STAGE System gives you a chance to pause and ask yourself who you want to be on stage. If you are naturally funny, how can you incorporate some humor into your talk? If you went through a life-changing experience, how can you tie that into your subject? If you love interacting with the audience, how can you make that a big part of your speech? By using the STAGE System as your guide, you build your talk so you are in your element and really shining on stage.

For many students, participating in online class discussions feels like a chore—a box to check off for participation points rather than a lively dialogue.“I go in there and do it because I have to,” says Bradley Hook, a 28-year old sophomore at City College of San Francisco, and a blogger for EdSurg

Flipping Lesson Design: Moving The Learning Objective To The End -

Flipping Lesson Design: Moving The Learning Objective To The End - | Serious Play | Scoop.it
There would be few teachers around the world who haven’t been advised to publish lesson objectives at the beginning of every lesson.

After all, this is a signal for students where the learning is going, and can help keep teachers and students on the same page. But for me it has largely been an ineffective strategy, with students just mindlessly writing them down and rarely independently checking their learning against them as the lesson unfolds.

John Dabell succinctly articulates a possible reason: It could be argued, that we need to accomplish the learning first before we can understand what the learning objective is and what the knowledge and understanding relates to. I concur, and after years of adhering to the expectation of writing down LO’s at the start of lessons, at the beginning of this year I decided to try something different.

John Dalziel's curator insight, March 26, 3:25 AM
Vibby is a very good tool that practitioners (and/or others) can use to highlight and share specific parts of videos.
Viewers will only see the cropped portion users sent and not the entire video.
This is especially useful to use with learners.
Instead of sharing the whole video users can highlight the parts they want them to see and send them over in the form of vibs. Vibby supports a wide variety of video hosting platforms including YouTube, Vimeo, Twitch, Facebook, Mobcrush and any publicly hosted HTML5 video format.
Vibs that users create can be open to the public for everyone to watch and comment on. Alternatively, users can unlist their vibs so that only those with the link can comment.
Users can also share their vibs via email, social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter, a direct link, or embed them in their blog or website.
NOTE: YouTube has a relatively similar feature that allows users to crop and share specific parts of videos.

Work stories

Work stories | Serious Play | Scoop.it
People like hearing stories. If you can tell a pertinent story, your message has a far greater chance of lodging in the listener’s mind. Stories can be stories about you and your clients, or about other people’s clients, or be more metaphorical as are these:  Stories.

Below are some true stories—case studies, if you will—about actual clients and others, anonymised, which illustrate aspects of emotional intelligence in the workplace.

How to lead a brainstorm - TED.Ed | Serious Play | Scoop.it
Brainstorming was invented in the 1930s as a practical idea-generation technique for regular use by “creatives” within the ad agency BBDO. The skill began to gain a wider audience in 1942, when Alex Osborn — the “O” in BBDO — released a book called How to Think Up and sparked the imaginations of his fellow Mad Men.
