Colleague Lou Hoffman, who specializes in the PR and corporate communications world, has written a great post about the actual practice of using storytelling in the real world.

Hoffman puts the frequency of telling actual stories in business communications at only about 10% -- and he suggests that number is high. That's why he and his company use the framework of storytelling techniques in corporate communications so storytelling can be applied in a more meaningful way in business.

Makes sense to me. And it probably will to you, too. This a great way to put all the storytelling hype into perspective, and Hoffman offers concrete examples of how 5 techniques can assist your business.

Have a great week and story on!

Innovative storytelling is on the rise! Here's the second post today on creative developments in business storytelling.

This drinking game to generate stories made me smile and wish I was in the room with this group!

The post by Ilan Mochari @IlanMochari gives the directions for how to use this game to generate stories and visual storyboards in a fast and fun way. And it teaches everyone a lot about communication, too.

Why would you want to use this game? In this instance it was used to generate new ideas for marketing and branding campaigns. As the author says, it's easy to rinse and repeat previous campaigns, and harder to come up with new ones.

I think it's ingenious and definitely want to try it out. If you experiment with it, let us know what happens. And what other ways could you use this game in business?

Have fun and story on :)

How to Create Videos to Capture Your Audience

How to Create Videos to Capture Your Audience | Serious Play | Scoop.it

When it comes to marketing strategy, videos are powerful. How powerful? On Facebook, for example, videos are shared 12 times more than non-video posts. And let’s not forget YouTube, the second largest search engine in the world (after Google, of course). The ability of videos to increase user engagement is unsurpassed.

According to YouTube’s statistics page, they get over 800 million unique visitors each month, users view more than 4 billion hours of video each month and upload 72 hours of video every minute. That’s a lot of potential for your video....

Karen Dietz's curator insight, October 18, 2013 10:19 AM

From Pratik Dholakiya, a guest author for Copyblogger, comes a great article on how to capture someone's attention for gaining readeres, customers and fans.

Many of the 7 tips connect with storytelling. In fact tip #2 is: tell stories!

Tip #1 is about headlines. I just wrote an article about how to title stories to entice people to read. Especially when shared digitally. As Bullas says, if the headline doesn't grab them they won't read your material. So headlines are critically important if you want folks to read your stories.

Tip #5 is all about being conversational. And that is critically important in your storytelling. No one likes reading material when you sound like a stuffed shirt :))

Tip #6 focuses on making your audience look good. When we think about this in story terms, it's making sure your customer is the hero of the story, not you.

All of the tips are solid. And there are quite a lot of good points here. So enjoy the discussion and the gems shared.

The title of this article is nothing knew -- we've known for decades that sharing stories is not about telling, but about showing and pulling people into your world.

So forget the title and go read this post for the 3 ideas for stories to tell.

I really like how the author talks about each type of story and the advice given. There are video stories that are used as examples, which is great and so helpful.

I trust this post and videos will give you some fresh ideas for your business storytelling.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, February 28, 2014 12:14 PM

What a great way to spend a rainy Saturday or Sunday. At least here in Southern California that's what we've got -- finally!

Anyway, not only does this free workbook have great eye-candy because of its graphics, I also find it very useful  for lead generation.

Where do stories come in? There's a solid 'Buyer Persona' worksheet that will help you build strong characters for your stories. And the 'Buyer Journey' worksheet is also another kind of story structure template. So is the 'Landing Page' worksheet.

I just wish the author had placed more emphasis on storytelling front and center as a key ingredient. But we can't always get what we want :))

In any event, it's a worthwhile piece and certainly puts all the mechanics of lead generation into one place. Enjoy working through the worksheets and growing your business!
