Workshop dynamics - understanding and shaping the flow

Workshop dynamics - understanding and shaping the flow | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Isn’t it strange that you can deliver the exact same workshop materials with two different groups and one session will go like a dream and the other can feel like an endless nightmare? Same materials, same trainer, completely different outcomes.

The magic factor, of course, are the delegates themselves, their characters and the way they are behaving on the day. We have an opportunity to understand and get the best out of that behaviour rather than being at the mercy of it. I use David Kantor’s model of group dynamics shared in his great book Reading the Room as my guide.

How Teams can Profit from Band Experiences ‹ http://coachfederation.org/blog | Serious Play | Scoop.it
How can teams and their leaders profit from music?

How can bands inspire their audience?

How can rhythm, sound and atmosphere play into success?

What remains after the band performance on the way home for the listeners?

I spend Thursday evenings at the modern Jazz school in Munich among others to find out the secrets behind those questions, to explore what is hidden behind rhythm and to examine what can be used and transferred to teams in the business world.
I want to introduce five concrete exercises from the band workshop that can be used by leaders and teams during daily business routines to raise customer’s enthusiasm.

» Feeling Resentful? 6 Hard Facts About Shared Work - World of Psychology

One obstacle to happiness is feeling resentful when another person won’t do his or her share of the work.

Resentment comes when you feel angry that you’ve been treated unfairly. But what is “fair” when deciding who should do what work? As I thought about my own (not infrequent) bouts of resentment, I identified these Six Facts About Shared Work.

Fact 1: Work done by other people sounds easy.

Fact 2: When you’re doing a job that benefits other people, it’s easy to assume that they feel conscious of the fact that you’re doing this work — that they should feel grateful, and that they should and do feel guilty about not helping you.

Fact 3: It’s hard to avoid “unconscious overclaiming.”

Fact 4: Taking turns is easier than sharing.

Fact 5: The person who cares the most will often end up doing a task.

Fact 6: If you want someone else to do a task, don’t do it yourself.

What is Groupthink? | ReadyToManage

What is Groupthink? | ReadyToManage | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Although it is a relatively new phenomenon in teams, and mostly attributed to the research work of Irving Janis at Yale University in the early 1970’s, Groupthink has become a significant concern to any people who operate a team situation. Groupthink occurs in organizations and teams which do not have high levels of healthy or constructive conflict. In other words, this is not destructive conflict but conflict in terms of ideas, how to achieve goals and when resources need to be changed or re-aligned. A team is especially vulnerable to groupthink when its members are similar in background, experience or attitudes and when the group is particularly protected or insulated from external opinions.

11 Questions You Need to Ask About Your Team's Effectiveness

11 Questions You Need to Ask About Your Team's Effectiveness | Serious Play | Scoop.it

You have a great product or service. You have the funds to make it happen. Now, the big question is "Do you have the people to stand by you and execute?"

The biggest question for entrepreneurs today is how to create a culture to keep your dream growing to its full potential. The answer is by creating a place for people to continue to develop both professionally and personally.

Dividing professional and personal development is an oxymoron. One feeds the other. And when you have an environment of mutual respect and open communication, more people want to hang around with you and make magic at work. The hardest part of work is the people piece. It needs on-going attention to keep productivity high and stress low.

Here are 11 questions to ask yourself and your team to make sure you are heading in the right direction.

The Cooperative Instinct

The Cooperative Instinct | Serious Play | Scoop.it
A new study finds that our first, quickest impulse is to cooperate, not compete.

So here’s the game. I give you some money—let’s say $10—and tell you the following: you’re playing with three other people that you don’t know and may never meet, and each of you have been given the same amount to start with. You are all invited to contribute any amount of your money to a common pool. Once everyone has contributed, the game doubles the amount in the pool, then gives each player an equal portion of that doubled amount. What do you do? How much do you put in?
