Good article with some good justification for more play for kids and what they learn while playing.

The fear that something will happen is so overblown - I tend to blame the media and our expanding instant news coverage - that if it bleeds it leads, and now covers the whole world in an instant. -Lon

Fabulous piece on the power of play and the dramatic impact the loss of time and space for play is having on our children today.

Remembering to Play - 6 Ways to Live a Playful Life

Play is training for unconventional and creative living. One could say play is a radical act – for adults! When we allow ourselves to live as authentically playful beings, we stand out from the crowd, from the ways we, and others, are expected to be. As we grow up, we lose our spontaneity and freedom.

Here are six ways to live a playful live. By practicing these you will shake yourself free from habits or default behaviours that limit your playground, while expanding your range of choices and awareness of Self and Life!

A Digital Native's Guide To Playing Outside

A Digital Native's Guide To Playing Outside

So you’ve been told to go outside, and you’re not sure what to do.

Of course, you’re not happy about it.There’s no electricity outside, no Wi-Fi, and the sun on your iPad screen is just plain awful.

You remember going outside before, but can’t recall much beyond moving from the house to the car to the store back to the car and in the house again—a familiar pattern.

Either way, you are quite sure that being outside sucks. After all, your parents get to stay inside—why should you have to go outside? There’s nothing to do, and you’ll be bored. Note that your failures at playing outside are our failures as parents and teachers, so we’re going to address this together.

Have a seat.

Get ready...

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Remember how to play outside... Ready, set, go!...

ADULT PLAY THERAPY

ADULT PLAY THERAPY | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Toys, and play in general, are important when it comes to growing up and learning about the world around us. The young use toys and play to discover their identity, help their bodies grow strong, learn cause and effect, explore relationships, and practice skills they will need as adults. Adults use toys and play to form and strengthen social bonds, teach, remember and reinforce lessons from their youth, discover their identity, exercise their minds and bodies, explore relationships.

Don't Forget to Play!

Don't Forget to Play! | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Play has earned some inaccurate baggage of connotations over the years. When we talk about playing in education or play time, many would push back that it is not appropriate to play in classroom, or that play is not good learning. This could not be farther from the truth. I think Fred Rogers put it best:

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.

Presentation Zen: Never leave the playground: The key to a long, happy life

Presentation Zen: Never leave the playground: The key to a long, happy life | Serious Play | Scoop.it

"We don’t stop playing because we grow old," George Bernard Shaw said. "We grow old because we stop playing." We know—but too often forget—that play is a key component of learning and creativity (it's even good for business). Play is also the key to a healty body, a healthy mind, and a long life, says Stephen Jepson, founder of Never Leave the Playground.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Never leave the playground is great advice.

Stephen Jepson believes the key to never losing your balance -- or your mind -- is in the games and activities of our youth. Wait until you see his incredible playground.

Benettonplay! creative entertainment from FABRICA

B PLAY has been created by a young team of international designers and artists at FABRICA, the Benetton communication research centre in Italy.

B PLAY is a online community which explores play as a form of expression and communication.

We believe that there's more to play than shoot 'em ups and driving sims.

We believe that the meaning of a game is in how it helps players find new ways to be together and to speak to each other.

We believe that putting people into new kinds of creative relationships with each other is a statement of faith in the power of play and creativity.

Games and playfulness

"Here's a thought to think about: most games don't encourage playfulness.(...)

Playfulness, as Carse would describe it, belongs to the realm of “infinite games.”

“To be serious,” he says, “is to press for a specified conclusion. To be playful is to allow for unlimited possibility.”

To be playful and serious at the same time defines the ideal mental condition.- John Dewey

Play, Brain research and 21st Century

We learn some of our most basic life skills through play. Play contributes to the development of our most important brain function- the ability to control and modify our behavior in order to reach a goal. Adults, adolescents and children all learn and can potentially “change their brains” through play (Aamodt and Wang, 2011, Medina, 2008).

Remembering to Play - The Language of Play

Remembering to Play - The Language of Play | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Work and Play are powerful words.  Combined with your energy or tone, they create a distinct impact on levels of creativity, engagement, motivation and wellbeing.

When we say Work, we often unconsciously invite an intention that is infused with limitation, heaviness and jadedness.  On some level, we expect things to be hard, boring (...) because of all the associations and feelings that come with Work (...).  However, by using the Language of Play, we become conscious and intentional about the kind of experiences we want to have, and empower others to be creative and spirited.
