This is a very quick article that connects directly with another post I curated today on Similar Stories and their use in sales.

This article by Tori Reid talks about how to talk about mistakes by sharing a Similar Story. The application in this case is to help someone change their behavior. Of course, it could apply to sales situations also. In the field of Folklore we would call these 'cautionary tales'.

Regardless, the point of this piece is how to offer criticism in indirect, yet powerful ways through storytelling. Reid shares 2 reasons why this works.

I wouldn't use this technique 100% of the time, but it is important to have in your storytelling tool box.

The Power of Experiential Learning | ReadyToManage

The Power of Experiential Learning | ReadyToManage | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Experiential Learning is simply learning by doing. It is the way we naturally learn to walk, talk and ride a bike and many other things (especially when we are young). Being in action stimulates all the key learning senses, not just the mind, and provides an active experience of the learning. In general, games and exercises are used to approximate to this way of learning and are typically used as metaphors for what happens in the real world. Broadly, they provide a safe environment to practice the new skill and maximize the learning.

Debriefing is the key to the learning experience. Most participants will not see the effect of their action in the game until you draw it out from them. Still fewer participants will immediately draw the link between their behavior in the game and what they do in the workplace. If you are not experienced at debriefing games, follow the simple rules shown below.

Skills Converged > Giving Feedback Exercise: Avoid Destructive Feedback | Serious Play | Scoop.it
"When first presented with new ideas, many seem to be quick to highlight the potential problems with the idea rather than focusing on its potential. This attitude often leads to destructive criticism which can be particularly ineffective in brainstorming sessions and meeting. This exercise helps to highlight the negative aspects of destructive criticism and how positive feedback can significantly boost enthusiasm and encourage further contribution. Delegates also learn how to formulate their negative feedback as constructive feedback during this exercise."

Skills Converged > Positive Appreciation, Affirmation and Praise

Skills Converged > Positive Appreciation, Affirmation and Praise | Serious Play | Scoop.it

In this exercise, a group of people get to acknowledge each other’s actions and appreciate the impact of such actions on their own lives. People tend to avoid praising despite the fact that it is incredibly motivating. In addition, people also tend to shrug off praise as a way of being humble or they may feel they need to be polite rather than boasting about their actions. Both of these lead to a missed opportunity on boosting a person’s self-esteem. This exercise provides an opportunity to do this systematically and in a safe environment.

Good article on the importance of feedback. It should be:

* non-evaluative

* timely (throughout the course would be the best)

* relevant and specific (relative to learning objectives of the course)

* practical, action-oriented (what to do to improve)

There are various technology tools mentioned in the article, but for small groups that I have taught I have simply used e-mail.
