Using Books as an Empathy Resource

Using Books as an Empathy Resource | Serious Play | Scoop.it
You gave us empathy book recommendations. Now we're giving you the questions to ask children while reading them.

It is one thing to read a book. It is another thing to comprehend a book. It is quite another thing to understand its characters.

Researchers have found that people who read fiction develop empathy when they are emotionally transported into the story. This is a fantastic opportunity for parents, peers and educators to help children explore the complexity of characters’ actions and emotions. How we read books with children affects their perceptions of social interactions, feelings and events. So the more we help children explore the emotions and perspectives of story characters, the better we equip them with the real-world capacity to understand the actions and feelings of other people.

5 Reasons Why Gaming Is An Effective Way to Teach Empathy (And Other Skills)

5 Reasons Why Gaming Is An Effective Way to Teach Empathy (And Other Skills) | Serious Play | Scoop.it

How do sports and video games teach kids to be empathetic?

Video games and gaming are great motivators. Games can also be a rewarding activity for social and mental well-being. Healthy Minds Canada (HMC) has developed a prototype for a new mobile game, designed to develop empathy and improve life skills in young gamers (aged 9-16).  HMC believes that in order to promote a more understanding culture and to stop bullying, improving empathy is essential in de-stigmatizing all mental health issues and changing users’ off-line behaviour.

A really misleading title. This article is about a game that is being developed that they HOPE will teach empathy.  I'm not convinced.

Empathy: The Most Important Back-to-School Supply

Empathy: The Most Important Back-to-School Supply | Serious Play | Scoop.it

"My most important back-to-school supply doesn't fit in a backpack, and it can't be ordered online. It's as essential as a pencil, but unlike a pencil, no technology can replace it. In a sense, like a fresh box of crayons, it can come in many colors. Better than the latest gadget, it's possible to equip every student with it, and even better, when we do, it can transform our world.

It's actually a "muscle" I've been working on all summer. It's empathy."

Ariana Amorim's insight:

You'll find here a fitness plan for building an empathy muscle. It's a 3 step plan that is even summarized on a poster which you can download here

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking

Empathy In Creativity and Design Thinking | Serious Play | Scoop.it

"The new RSA animate video, The Power of Outrospection is quite thought provoking and has gotten me thinking about all kinds of links between empathy and creativity.

In the video, philosopher Roman Krznaric explores the idea that we live in a time that demands more empathic adventurers in all aspects of life. Empathy not just so we act better towards others, but also because it helps us create better innovations, services and quality of life. I was struck by the video because I think there is something in the zeitgeist these days that highlights the importance of empathy for creating."
