Doing New with Less - Creative Thinking and Innovative Programs on a Shoestring

Doing New with Less - Creative Thinking and Innovative Programs on a Shoestring | Serious Play | Scoop.it

There’s always value in creating the greatest impact from the resources most readily available to us in organizations (which I learned just yesterday can be described with the much more impressive phrase: physical eolithism).

This is especially true when the people, financial, and other resources we need to get things done aren’t what they used to be or that we would want them to be. Talking about this with a client the other day for an upcoming creative thinking and innovation workshop I’m presenting, I blurted out, “It’s all about doing new with less.”

Boost creativity and productivity by getting back to nature.

Sometimes it's not enough to just take a day off of work or get out of the city; we need to immerse ourselves in nature to access our full potential for creative thought, focus, and productivity. History's greatest minds knew it and recent research confirms it. So clear your calendar, switch off your phone, and get out there.

MISC Magazine | Five Everyday Habits for Boosting Creativity

MISC Magazine | Five Everyday Habits for Boosting Creativity | Serious Play | Scoop.it

I have a simple game that I often use as an icebreaker before any creative session. It starts with creatively naming things. The idea is to ask people to look around and give everyday items a different name. For instance a cell phone could also be called a “ball and chain” or a car could be called “hot wheels.” It’s amazing how the hidden or, in effect, “real” roles of those items reveal themselves through this exercise. With a bit of creativity, everyone can come up with some fun and entertaining names for many mundane, everyday objects and these new names can be a starting point for the creation of new product categories.

Here are the 5 proven everyday habits for you to use to boost creativity:

1/ Everyday Journaling.

2/ The Discipline of Curiosity.

3/ Practice Problem Framing Improvisation.

4/ Deposit Positive Energy.

5/ Avoid Creative Brain Drain.

Household Object Challenges – Imagination Soup Fun Learning and Play Activities for Kids

Household Object Challenges – Imagination Soup Fun Learning and Play Activities for Kids | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Research shows that we learn best by doing.  Author Daniel Pink in his book, A Whole New Mind, argues that we are better prepared for the future if we embrace these concepts: design, story, empathy, sympathy, play, and meaning.

So, I set about creating challenges that would invite children to learn by doing and incorporate the concepts articulated by Daniel Pink on Think! Using household materials makes these challenges affordable but also more challenging. Innovation requires the creative use of resources.  If you want your child to be an innovator, there is no better preparation than these types of challenges.

Skills Converged > Branding Exercise: What is My Company Like?

Skills Converged > Branding Exercise: What is My Company Like? | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Companies develop different cultures. It is important to know how the company is seen both internally and externally. Internally, it helps to bind the team and make everyone coordinate their efforts so they can produce consistent results. Externally, it leads to a solid brand where customers know exactly what the company represents and how the company’s products and services are provided.

In this exercise, delegates get to analyse their company on a number of categories and choose a specific style for each type. They can then analyse this data to see if this is indeed how they want the company to be seen and what may need to be changed.
