Household Object Challenges – Imagination Soup Fun Learning and Play Activities for Kids

Household Object Challenges – Imagination Soup Fun Learning and Play Activities for Kids | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Research shows that we learn best by doing.  Author Daniel Pink in his book, A Whole New Mind, argues that we are better prepared for the future if we embrace these concepts: design, story, empathy, sympathy, play, and meaning.

So, I set about creating challenges that would invite children to learn by doing and incorporate the concepts articulated by Daniel Pink on Think! Using household materials makes these challenges affordable but also more challenging. Innovation requires the creative use of resources.  If you want your child to be an innovator, there is no better preparation than these types of challenges.

Creative Educator - 5 Hallmarks of a Creative Project

Creative Educator - 5 Hallmarks of a Creative Project | Serious Play | Scoop.it

"Why is it that we definitely know a creative project when we see it, but we are hesitant to assess creativity, fearing that it is too squishy or subjective?

Creative projects are the tangible products of creative behavior and creative thinking. If we want students to produce creative works, we need to structure the project such that the products are a natural result of these behaviors."

Humour and Play fostering creative thinking

(studies show creativity is enhanced after experiencing humour)

“Laughter provides a train wreck for the mind, suspending thought and being in the moment, which opens the channels for innovative, creative thinking. You can’t think while you are laughing. Try it. Try doing a calculus problem (or moving a couch) while in the throes of laughter. It can’t be done. But what it does do is metaphorically open the cranial channels and allow for creative, innovative thinking to emerge.” (Lemons, G. 2005)

How Serious Play Leads To Breakthrough Innovation

How Serious Play Leads To Breakthrough Innovation | Serious Play | Scoop.it

IN CREATIVE INTELLIGENCE, BRUCE NUSSBAUM ARGUES THAT BUILDING A SPACE AWAY FROM NORMAL ACTIVITY, WHERE PEOPLE TRUST EACH OTHER AND AGREE TO BEHAVE BY A DIFFERENT SET OF RITUALS, IS KEY TO ENHANCING A TEAM’S CREATIVE CAPABILITY.

The following is an excerpt from Creative Intelligence by Bruce Nussbaum (HarperBusiness), out March 5th.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

"If you still think you don’t have the capacity for Creative Intelligence, try reframing aspects of your work or your life in a more playful way: Approach obstacles at work or in your life not as problems to be solved, but as challenges to be met. When a new task comes your way, put together a team of people you trust, encourage each other to be honest (that’s another area where serious play diverges from brainstorming, with its emphasis on positive encouragement at the expense of open dialogue), and let everyone know it’s okay to look a little silly."

7 Ways to be Creative | Innovation Management

7 Ways to be Creative | Innovation Management | Serious Play | Scoop.it

When faced with the question “Are you creative?” I have found that only the half of the audiences I speak to consider themselves creative. (...)

As innovation is partly depending on guts to dare, something that comes from self-confidence, I think it is time that we stretch our old opinion on what creativity is all about – here are 7 different ways to be creative. I am sure you can find yourself described at least in a couple of them.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

The 7 ways to be creative are:

1- Quantitatively creative

2- Creative combining

3- Creatively find new gains and delights

4- Creative exploitation

5- Creative refinement

6- Creative focus finding

7- Creatively swapping perspectives

Play And Profundity: Release Your Inner Creativity

Play And Profundity: Release Your Inner Creativity | Serious Play | Scoop.it

As a creative Coach today, a lot of my adult students come to me desperately wanting to escape this wall or box that they have built around themselves. Many of them hold onto this idea that it is so crucial to keep this mature mask on when in public. And, I say in some respects we do have many different personas and masks that we must present in the greater world. However, the real problem lies in many adults wearing their public masks and personas so often that it is who they become. They get lost in a role and then that same role loses them. The real them. The person they were as a child or young adolescent.

Innovation Excellence | Anti-Conventional Thinking (ACT)

Innovation Excellence | Anti-Conventional Thinking (ACT) | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Have you tried brainstorming, ideas campaigns, crowdsourcing and other idea generation activities only to be disappointed by the results? (...)

The truth is, many of these creative exercises – and in spite of what anyone tells you about innovation, idea generation is a creative activity that can eventually result in innovation – are poorly conceived. (...)

Fortunately, there is a solution that allows normally creative people to behave more like highly creative people and so generate better ideas. I call this method Anti-Conventional Thinking (ACT). It requires that you throw away many of the rules you have learned about brainstorming and idea generation.
