Skills Converged > Design Exercise: Design a Political Cartoon

Skills Converged > Design Exercise: Design a Political Cartoon | Serious Play | Scoop.it

This is a creative design exercise, allowing participants to work together as a team in achieving an objective. As part of this exercise, delegates will get to choose a number of political cartoons and have an attempt at designing one. The design is just a pretext to get people talk to each other and share what they like or dislike. The cartoons provide an opportunity to laugh about serious stuff so the exercise is light hearted but can have significant value as people can easily end up discussing values, current affairs, ethical and political issues and of course politics.

Note that the emphasis of this exercise is in the descriptive design of a cartoon as opposed to the actual drawing or art. Most people are not skilled in drawing and forcing them to draw in this exercise might make them feel uncomfortable. This is why the drawing part is ignored (though of course you can optionally add it if it suits your training needs). However, there is no reason why people cannot come up with an idea for a political cartoon which this exercise captures.

Skills Converged > Brainstorming Exercise: Design Shoes

Skills Converged > Brainstorming Exercise: Design Shoes | Serious Play | Scoop.it

This is an entertaining and educational exercise. It helps to unleash people’s creativity, bring them together and get them to cooperate on a common task and solve problems.

In this exercise, the main aim is to get teams design shoes. You will provide a set of criteria as well as research materials and teams should then work on a creative solution. The designs are compared and a winning team is rewarded.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

I like this idea:

"Design a shoe that represents your brand"

More ideas that come to my mind:

If I were a shoe...

If I were in your shoes...

If you were in my shoes...

ART THERAPY REFLECTIONS: Mandalas in Art Therapy

ART THERAPY REFLECTIONS: Mandalas in Art Therapy | Serious Play | Scoop.it
I use mandala making in therapy to help clients feel calm and centered, for self-expression and as a way to help people explore who they are in groups. The following photos are of mandalas made in a classroom showing how each person ‘saw’ themselves in the circle. They painted how much room they felt they took, how they felt their energy or self looked in the classroom and how they felt they fit in the whole. I have used this exercise as:1.    A device to explore group conflict2.    A visual representation for families in therapy3.    A device to work with bullying4.    A device to work with boundaries and shared space5.    A tool to explore aggressive, passive and assertive behavior.

Fun for students to email their learning aims at the beginning of a semster/term and then by mid-semester/term checking if they achieved them or not, and what they need to do to achieve success.

Melissa Marshall's curator insight, September 3, 2013 4:54 PM

This would be a great tool for RE and other courses where students set goals... not to mention it is a really fun idea :)

The Daily Create - Daily assignments to fuel your creativity

The Daily Create provides a space for regular practice of spontaneous creativity through challenges published every day. Each assignment should take no more than 15-20 minutes. There are no registrations, no prizes, just a community of people producing art daily. Developed as part of the ds106 open course on digital storytelling, TDC is open to anyone who wants a regular dose of creative exercises (and it more fun than jumping jacks, pushups, and P90X).

Studio Days - The Inspired Classroom

Studio Days - The Inspired Classroom | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Last year I tried a new idea with my fourth graders – Studio Day and it was a hit!  Please, let me share!

Concept – Students are given a long amount of time to start and complete a project.  This time (1-3 hours) is more time than normally given so that students are forced to work their way through the creative process.  (Instead of starting something only to put it into their “To Do” folder to work on when they can.)  It also allows students to work on a project that can be quite involved and include some real artistic creation in the visual arts, music, theater, and/or poetry making, etc.

Time – Carve out an amount of time that is more then what you would expect.  This will allow for ample clean up time and for “Pushing Time.”   Pushing time, for me begins when the first student says they are done and I follow up with, “No you’re not.  What else can you do with this?”

Place – Using an area outside of the normal classroom (art room, outside, big open space) can be a great idea.  It gives a special feel to the time you have and it takes away a lot of distractions.  (Kind of like when you bring your work to the kitchen table, away from your office desk.)

mike rhoades: getting LOST in writing music

mike rhoades: getting LOST in writing music | Serious Play | Scoop.it

I almost always listen to music while I write.  While I read too, for that matter, but especially while I write.  It seems to act as a trigger, a way for my mind to recognize that we're crossing over from the real to the imagined; the mundane to the fantastic.

Do you benefit from listening to music while you write?  Do you have a go-to CD or artist or song?  Has a piece of music ever inspired a story or character for you?

Skills Converged > How to Avoid Using Poor Motivational Posters

Skills Converged > How to Avoid Using Poor Motivational Posters | Serious Play | Scoop.it

Posters which are used in the workplace to remind us of the organisation’s values are often not very effective. They might be noticed the first time seen on the wall but it is then filtered out the same way we filter out those motivational posters or intrusive advertisements.

(...)

Since employees may view management-sponsored advertisements as a form of influence, it is important to consider the other part of self-advertisement too; the self.

The solution is simple; employees should be involved in the process of setting up the advertisement. If they are involved in the design and selection of these messages, not only they are more likely to accept them but also they are more likely to notice them more often in the future. After all, they fully understand and accept the philosophy behind the messages and are believers.

"This is a fun exercise where delegates get to practice creative writing in groups. Some people find writing difficult especially knowing where to start. This exercise is designed to inspire delegates and help them to write creatively by thinking of associations between prewritten passages given to them.

The writing exercise is also helpful for public speaking or impromptu speech. It helps delegates to systematically create content by getting inspired from reading other content."

Get kids interacting and improving their language skills with this fun game! I liked the vocabulary spinner that I saw (here), so I made my own! For the activity, I tossed vocabulary words in a lunch bag. Kids flicked the game spinner, then pulled out a word. Once they had their word, the fun began!

Students act, draw, rhyme, or define their word. They might also have to put it in a sentence, name what part of speech it is, or give a synonym or antonym for it. It's a game of chance!

Beyond the Book: Infographics of Students' Reading History

Beyond the Book: Infographics of Students' Reading History | Serious Play | Scoop.it

I'm an evangelist.

A book evangelist, that is. I want my students to read widely and read often, to pick up a book instead of browsing Tumblr every time they are bored. But I have no desire to assess my students for each book they read during the year. I do want my students to think about some of the books that have affected them and influenced them, though. And I want them to plan ahead and think about the books they want to read in the future. In other words, I want them to be readers.

Recently, I've also been fascinated by the way the human mind interprets visual symbols. From doodling to reading and writing text, the brain is wired with a proclivity for visual sensory ability. In order to help students harness this power, we have been trying our hand at visual notes and sketchnoting in class. Then I decided to try some lessons with infographics.

When I found this lesson about reading histories, I was inspired. What if I could combine my students' fresh knowledge of visual notetaking and infographics with an analysis of their reading lives? What would they learn about themselves as readers? What would they learn about each other?

BackStory series... The Story Behind the Picture

Here's how it works:

Someone submits a photo, and we ask our readers to write and submit their 250-300 word BackStory- what they THINK the story behind the photo is... everything you can't see in the picture.

Small Fists by Ryan Trauman is the first post in our BackStory series... The Story Behind the Picture.

This first BackStory is made up by someone (Trauman) who has no clue about the photo.

Ariana Amorim's insight:

Love this idea.
