ThinkUp 1.0: Reclaim your tweets and Facebook posts

ThinkUp 1.0: Reclaim your tweets and Facebook posts | Serial Twitter | Scoop.it

Expert Labs has released version 1.0 of ThinkUp, a program that lets people archive, search, and analyze their activity on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+.

And if you ask me, this is a big deal.

ThinkUp, the free, open-source brainchild of programmer and Lifehacker founder Gina Trapani, keeps track of what you've done online. It extracts the data from the walled gardens that house more and more of people's digital lives then replants it in your own garden.

The app isn't simple to install, unfortunately. You need some server administration skills so you can host ThinkUp on your own Web server or run it on an instance of Amazon's EC2 cloud-computing service. (More on that point later.)...

How To Change From A Social Media User Into A Social Media Leader

How To Change From A Social Media User Into A Social Media Leader | Serial Twitter | Scoop.it

I created and then abandoned a Twitter account many months ago. I had virtually zero reputation outside of Twitter when I started. And it wasn’t an account that became popular by following everyone back or using other tricks. On the abandoned account, all tweets were removed except one, which said:

Do not follow this account, follow this other account instead.

However, nearly 100,000 people followed the old account in the coming months (though many figured out their error eventually, and switched to the new one). That’s the power of a leader’s reputation in social media. Reputation can bring people to you even after you have left...

Introducing Twitter Stories: Collection of Curated Content | Twitter Blog | Serial Twitter | Scoop.it

Today we’re launching the first in a series of Twitter stories.

Read about a single Tweet that helped save a bookstore from going out of business; an athlete who took a hundred of his followers out to a crab dinner; and, Japanese fishermen who use Twitter to sell their catch before returning to shore.

Each story reminds us of the humanity behind Tweets that make the world smaller.

Each month we’ll curate a selection of profiles to share...

Heron: “I think my job will probably not exist in five years.” | Serial Twitter | Scoop.it

The New York Times’ co-social media editor, Liz Heron, says that her own position probably falls on the side of transitional. “I think my job will probably not exist in five years”.

But! That’s “not because social media will die out or fade”. Quite the opposite. We’re in a moment of disruption right now — social media may be slowly transforming some formerly standard newsroom practices.

Focus on Art, Not on Features: Simple Online Tools for Writers

Focus on Art, Not on Features: Simple Online Tools for Writers | Serial Twitter | Scoop.it

As computer applications mature and its base of users grow, companies tend to continually tweak their functions and add features so that the programs can meet everyone’s needs. Sometimes, the changes are universally accepted, but other times it marginalizes users looking for a specialized and lightweight program.

Some writers believe that modern word processors have so many features and options that it interrupts their focus and actually hinders their creative efforts. Because of this hindrance, some writers have forsaken the computer and instead use typewriters or pen and paper.

That said, using those tools may also hinder the ability to create prolifically, but that’s the tradeoff...

Twitter (Trust) research: It's Where the Money & Action is

Twitter (Trust) research: It's Where the Money & Action is | Serial Twitter | Scoop.it

Bob Brown of Network World has curated news of two very interesting Twitter research projects that caught my attention.

We all agree that freedom of speech is good,  and it's great that everyone can now  become a publisher. However, there's a double-edged sword: If we speak to a friend before we think something though, all will surely be forgiven and forgotten. After all, we all make mistakes. But if you click that Tweet or Share button too quickly, either succumbing to knee-jerk reactions or without first checking the facts, you may find the digital world to be less forgiving.

Content curators have to be especially vigilent about curating someone else's content to make sure the facts and information are correct.

I believe the research related to here is essential reading, as it is furtherment of an established and growing trend:

One relates to Wellesley College's Department of Computer Science where two professors have been awarded a near half million dollar National Science Foundation grant to:

****build an application that gauges the trustworthiness of information shared on social networks, and in particular Twitter.

This was originally envisioned as a form of spammer identification, but

****has broadened to be able to determine the past history of a tweeter and also whether information being received is available from multiple sources.

The other brings us news of 'Tweetographer', a huge Data Mining project by two University of Cincinatti Computer Science students, descibed as:

"a real-time events guide extracted from information coming via large numbers of tweets."

This could be available as a web or mobile app at the end of the year and one of the co-creators, Billy Clifton (his partner is Alex Padgett)

**sees the uses expanding in the future to predict election results and compiling product reviews.

My takeaways are:

**that we all need to be very aware that what we tweet today can and may be used against us in the future

**search is still very much in its infancy when it comes to engine sophistication, stay tuned.
