News Discovery: Best RSS Feed Readers Apps for iPad-iPhone Based Journalists and Curators

News Discovery: Best RSS Feed Readers Apps for iPad-iPhone Based Journalists and Curators | Serendipi.ty | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are looking for the best alternative options when it comes to monitor, read, search and organize your preferred RSS feeds via your iPhone or iPad, this newly updated collection from Appadvice.com has probably everything you need and more.

From its introduction: "...When viewed as a whole, the differences between RSS Readers on the iPad aren’t that huge, simply because they all display content from an RSS feed source and many use a similar two column layout (feeds on one side, articles on the other).

The major differences can be seen in the rising importance of “social” RSS readers, or apps that take an active role in finding RSS feeds for you to read by leveraging your Internet presence or expressed interests.

Most of the rest of the RSS apps require a user to have a Google Reader account to pull feeds from, meaning that they mainly differ in their presentation and implementation of your Google Reader feeds. The choice of RSS reader may be a personal one, but there are a few standout apps in the genre you should be aware of before you decide."

Resourceful. Useful. Comprehensive. 8/10

How do you tell the story of a PLACE? New technologies like geo-tagging, location-aware devices, interactive video and augmented reality are being combined with traditional storytelling methods like documentary film and oral history to explore the world in richer, more in-depth ways than ever before. Using these tools and techniques, creators can now fully consider a location itself as one of the “main characters” in their narratives. Panelists include storytellers, practitioners and technologists who are creating the next generation of place-based storytelling.

How To Integrate and Publish Curated RSS Feeds On Your WordPress Blog

How To Integrate and Publish Curated RSS Feeds On Your WordPress Blog | Serendipi.ty | Scoop.it

Robin Good: For content curators who own or manage a WordPress-based website here is a great tutorial on how RSS feeds can be integrated and published directly (parsed) on any given web page.

Authored by Vladislav Davidzon this excellent tutorial requires some basic technical knowledge on how to operate WordPress variables and functions and it provides precise guidance on how to:

- Utilize the Built-in Parsing Function to Pull RSS Feeds in and Turn their XML code into Content

- Divide Content into the Right Number of Columns for your Website’s Design

- Create a Friendly Display of RSS Content Using WordPress Loop Variables

From the tutorial: "Included only since version 2.7 of the WordPress software, the ability to parse RSS feeds as content and include that information into a template file is relatively new and its parameters are largely unknown even among the more advanced members of the WordPress development community at large.

Luckily, these parameters are easy to learn and customize, and they can turn a simple RSS feed into a great source of extra content and discussion on already-busy WordPress blogs.

Not only can RSS feeds be parsed by WordPress, but they can also be split up into columns and tabs.

This allows for feeds to actually be used as the primary source of content on some WordPress blogs, especially those that consider themselves a mere aggregator of outside content rather than a producer of unique news, reviews, or commentary on any topic."

Very useful. 9/10

Pinterest premieres transmedia storytelling experiment | Daily Dot

Pinterest premieres transmedia storytelling experiment | Daily Dot | Serendipi.ty | Scoop.it

Pinterest has already changed the way marketers think about commerce.  But it may also be ushering in a new form of storytelling.  Transmedia company BeActive is using Pinterest to share one work of fiction through a combination of episodic videos, audio snippets, and visual pins.

Beat Girl is part graphic novel, part TV show, and all on Pinterest.  It tells the story of fictional DJ Heather Jennings in a method that’s not quite TV show, not quite in-person character sketch, and not quite graphic novel. With 160 pins and counting, viewers can catch new glimpses of Jennings’ life added daily. The interactive drama is presented as a prequel to an upcoming multi-platform video series.

While the finished product may be a genre of entertainment never seen before, BeActive CEO Nuno Bernardo says it’s rooted in a much older art form.  “We wanted to bring back the popular Photonovels of the ‘60s to the new digital generation,” he said in a statement. “The tools and functionalities introduced by Pinterest allowed us to release the content the way we envisioned. As a world’s first we expect that in the future more and more stories will be told on this network using photos and still images”.

Bernardo told the Daily Dot that although Beat Girl is based on a novel, he found it to be a story uniquely suited for multiple platforms.

Robin Good: Quicko is a new search engine which displays search results with individual, text-based information boxes a-la-Pinterest, and then allows to navigate them by providing a navigation top bar, which provides easy access to all results while maintaining the browsing task in context with the just-completed search action.

The authors behind Quicko have written: "We were fed up, the way search engines currently presents search results. it is so confusing to find what you are looking for and then you have to open a lot of windows which you think are closer to what you are looking for. So we came up with this idea that there should be only one single page from where you can navigate between all or selected results."
