Robin Good: Eppie Vojt, a Digital Marketing Consultant at JPL, has just published a great case study on making "garbage" rank in the SERPs, and at the end of it has discretely launched a new great online tool: LinkDetective.
LinkDetective will x-ray and dissect any website to provide you with a detailed breakdown of all the links pointing to that URL. Not only. LinkDetective allows you to slice and dice this data in a million different ways, giving you the capability for example to see only anchor text links coming from blogs, comments, or blogrolls and to see exactly where those have been obtained.
"Most link metrics tell a story you already know -- people are ranking with authoritative links and heavy use of anchor text.
No matter how you slice that, it doesn't get more actionable.
The challenge is figuring out where you can GET THOSE LINKS. Isn't it?
That's where Link Detective comes in.
Link Detective rifles through a backlink profile using semantic markup and URL naming conventions to group links by type. This makes it SUPER easy to see which of your competitors' links you can swipe for yourself.
Even if you're not looking for the "low-hanging fruit," Link Detective can make your job easier.
By quickly classifying low quality links, Link Detective leaves a smaller pile of high quality contextual links behind that you can run through manually.
No matter how you use it, Link Detective makes link building a breeze."
Highly recommended. 9/10

When you examine social networks' TOS, you'll see that many have different opinions as to acceptable versus prohibited behavior. In most of the cases of mass banning, social networks have responded to users who have broken the terms of service (TOS). However, when you take a look at the TOS on various social networks, you’ll see that many have different opinions as to what is considered acceptable behavior versus what is prohibited. Via maxOz

Sweeping and fundamental changes to online search are in full swing.
Google announced that it will begin collecting and sharing user data on just about all of its sites – and users will not have the ability to opt out.
One consequence of this move will be Google delivering users search results that are exponentially more personalized than anything we are used to seeing.
Because our activities on YouTube, Gmail, Picassa and Google+ will be factored in, when we do a Google search it will feel like a Facebook news stream experience – we will see more content from our connections and based on our own behavior and preferences. From the article: "Many consumers have now discovered that they can use social networks to actually find a company that deals with the product or service they need.
So how can your company get to the top of a social media search page?
By using keywords.
Here are some of the places and different ways you can use keywords on your social media pages.
#1: Find the right keywords for your social media accounts: it’s important to realize that the keywords you decide to use will be different for different social media accounts. It is not a “one keyword fits all” operation.
#2: Use the keyword in photo captions: The goal is to use keywords on your social media site whenever possible. One of the first things you can do is use these keywords to describe your company photos.
#3: Use your keyword when linking and tagging webpages: Social media keywords generally work best with sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook, but this ideas works just as well when it comes to Twitter.

I wanted to take a few steps back for this post about link building and cover some of the essentials that all SEOs should be aware of if they are building links. I tend to be a bit old school in my thinking sometimes and still think that all SEOs should go back to basics and make sure they understand the fundamentals of what they are doing – and why. It seems obvious, but not enough SEOs ask why. Its something I try and encourage my team at Distilled to do – question things and always ask why something is the way it is and why we are doing it that way.
