What will happen in the year ahead? I’m no fan of making predictions, but there are some major social media tactics that we can expect to affect businesses in 2012. Some of these tactics already have been adopted by select companies, but this year we’ll see mass adoption of these tactics by businesses of all sizes.

Buried in online marketing day in, day out, we often forget that there are *gasp* people who don’t know search, marketing, or the intricacies of content development. We know, we know; it’s hard to believe, isn’t it? 
Google’s Knowledge Graph has claimed its first “victim,” if you will: The content box that showed “People and Pages On Google+” is gone. In its place? A variety of Knowledge Graph-related content that will show up differently depending on the search query. 
A Wall Street Journal article on Google’s Penguin update highlighted some of the damage done to small businesses. Taking a quick look at these hurting websites offers some reasons why they have lost their search rankings and traffic from Google.
The solution isn’t removing bad links, as the small business owners featured in the WSJ think. Removing links isn’t a long-term solution and won’t necessarily restore search rankings. 
Trent Harbour's site was bitten by Penguin. This is a cautionary tale of missteps towards the problem of ranking on search engines. It is also an examination into why small businesses are completely at a loss as to what constitutes “ethical” SEO.

Google continues to improve how they detect webspam...“In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s quality guidelines. This algorithm represents another step in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content.” They are making reference to “webspam” which means the usual link schemes, keyword stuffing, cloaking, redirects that are sneaky, duplicate content etc.

OK- well there is no historic announcement on SEO but there is a historic announcement in the way Googles search will work. Of course, this is a huge announcement because Google will use ‘semantic’ search to really give a better search experience to the user. WHAT IS SEMANTIC SEARCH? 
If the last few months of ranking changes have shown me anything, it's that poorly-executed link building strategy that many of us call white hat can be more dangerous than black-hat strategies like buying links. |
