A smart way to get backlinks -- strong, free backlinks -- begins with using Alexa.com. Here's how to use this goldmine for quality linkbuilding strategies...
Friday afternoon Matt Cutts tweeted: Minor weather report: small upcoming Google algo change will reduce low-quality exact-match domains in search... All weekend the forums and blogs were atwitter with the news and lots of webmasters have reported getting hit by the algo change. I did quite a bit of research over the weekend and here are just a few of the local EMDs I found still sitting in top spots.

A couple of days ago, Matt Cutts of Google announced an algorithm change that would impact exact match domains (EMDs). The drop in page rank is already happening for many sites with a URL that exactly matches its main, targeted keywords. Here, SEOmoz provides a sharp and fast-read analysis of a few impacted sites.
Collection of links to many useful SEO documents. Learn. Research. Rank higher on search engines.
Matt Cutts explains that the usual reason a site’s PageRank drops by 30-50% is because the site violates Google's quality guidelines by selling links that pass PageRank. And then frustrated readers of Matt's blog demand more SEO transparency and policy consistency.

"Another way in which you as a content creator can dominate the search rankings with your content is to get more and more social shares. A study by branded3 proved the connection between tweets to a particular URL and its ranking. Their results showed: 1) 50 tweets or less – Not sure how much, but URLs received benefit in rankings with 50 tweets or less, but those benefits declined after that. 2) 5,000 tweets – There’s a huge jump for a page that gets an average of 5,000 tweets. This would be content that goes viral on Mashable, BuzzFeed or Copyblogger. 3) 7,500 tweets – When a page gets 7,500 or more tweets, they can easily show up in the top five SERPs on Google". Yahoo’s slide continues with the news today that Pinterest is now sending more traffic to publishers than organic Yahoo search results. That’s according to Shareaholic, a provider of social sharing buttons and widgets with more than 200,000 publishers using its tools. In a blog post, Shareaholic says Pinterest was the fourth biggest traffic source in August among its publishers — beating out Yahoo organic search, which fell to fifth. Overall, Google search was the top traffic source, followed by direct traffic and then Facebook in third.

"Content from users can provide real value. Why are comments important as blog content? Not only are you generating additional unique, on-topic content for your pages, comments may even contribute to your article's freshness score. That's an important area of search engine optimization (SEO). While it's debatable whether the number of comments on a page is directly correlated with higher rankings, we all understand the value of having more fresh, relevant content on a page. And of course, user engagement and community building are crucial in brand-building...
From The Article: "The rules of search have changed. In fact, they change on a daily basis. But never so dramatically has rank been uprooted since the explosion of social media. Social media sites, especially the power houses of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, have become backlink central for affecting organic search results. Social media’s influence on driving business via the web is expected to surpass search engine optimization (SEO) in 2013, according to eMarketer. Web marketers and PR professionals must pay attention to how social media affects search, and ultimately how it can change the rules of online visibility and (online) brand engagement. How can you use social media to increase your SEO rank and ensure that the rank and ensuing traffic will convert to web business"? "Google’s announced that another Panda Update is being unleashed on its results, one that it says will impact 0.7% of queries. We’re calling it Panda 3.92, though we’re wondering if it’s time to declare Panda 4.0 upon us."

Here's a compelling comparison of Mitt Romney's website to President Barack Obama's -- from an SEO perspective! Sounds like both sites could use some basic work. But interestingly, there's probably a lesson in this website analysis for all who read this post. The SEO critique of these political sites will likely whisper a few improvements we should prioritize for our own websites.

The words, "You can't improve what you don't measure," are almost ubiquitous online when reading about web statistics. It's clear that everyone should be watching what visitors are doing and where they're coming from, but ...

If you’re a regular follower of Matt Cutts’ videos on YouTube, you would’ve picked up on a few hints and link building tips that work. Matt’s also been very clear about which link building pratices you should avoid. Here are my favourite Matt Cutts Videos on link building including recommendations and techniques that work...

Guest blogging has become a common link building tactic. The concept is a good one. Provide a blogger with something they can use (content), and in return, they give you a link. In practice, it's not always that smooth.
One of the emails I received came from a startup in San Francisco that was clearly in trouble SEO-wise. They had three domains in use, and all three were hit during that nine day period. To make matters worse, all three were hit by Panda, and one was hit by both Panda and Penguin (or what I call Pandeguin). Since it’s important to understand which algorithm update hit your site, I analyzed both Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics data to confirm which algorithm update hit which domain. My analysis confirmed the Panda, Panda, and Pandeguin situation. Needless to say, we had a lot of work to do.
