While I don't completely agree that content is the new SEO, it's  unquestionable that Google doesn't like manipulating its search results. As far as website rankings are concerned, these should be based on relevance, popularity,  and authenticity of the brand and content therein.

Forget about website rankings for a minute and let's talk about the ranking of content. We know that Google uses various signals to rank some content or blog and these signals include:

A. The age of the blog
B. Traffic on the blog
C. Popularity of the blog  
D. Quality of content 

These things can further be subdivided into:

A. Variety and useful of content on the blog
B. Social media amplification, shares, outreach, viral-ity 
C. Comments, hits, views and likes
D. Trust factor
E. Use experience on the site ( time to download, easy navigability)
F. Link profile and sites linking back to it (as an indicator of usefulness, trust, and popularity)  

and many others.

So, we all agree that content is reigning. More so, because apps have also entered into the game of search and visitors entering through apps don't use search engines. So, it's another layer to search, as pointed out by Ilia Markov.

But, more businesses are failing when it comes to content marketing.

Probably, they are not able to do it right. Maybe because, it's not technical and has no written code of conduct.

But, we can still perform better at content marketing, if we get to know what leads us to failure.
