URL Structure - It's importance for quality website performance (infographic)

URL Structure - It's importance for quality website performance (infographic) | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

URL sturcture has been in the past quite confusing when it comes to how should one be using or creating them properly. While the obvious is to elimintae ugly URLs

Australian Content Network's insight:

One things that I certainly don't think webmasters and SEO's pay enough attention to in their website structure and design is URL structure. The term "SEO Friendly URLs" was coined a number of years ago and has become part of the vernacular. However it's not really focused relative to other metrics such as links and keywords. A well developed website should have a strong URL foundation, and even though you will here that URLs do not really matter, I tend to disagree.

We normally go a little deeper with our URL structure, and have had great success with sound silo URL structures, ensuring categories and sub categories are correctly built, and importantly interlink correctly in the context of the entire website.

The infographic below is quite a good example of how URLs should be considered when building a website. I found this via the link above, but it's a really good place to start.

SEO Changes From The Dawn Of Time [Infographic]

SEO Changes From The Dawn Of Time [Infographic] | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

In 1991 The World Wide Web was launched. As a result, the way humans communicated and connected with each other changed forever.

Australian Content Network's insight:

When we first started playing around online about 10 years ago, we were using Chris Carpenters Google Cash system. Man it was fun, and just by adding an affiliate link into the destination URL of adwords, you could do very, very well.

Like most loopholes though, Google put a stop to that pretty quickly. We used, tried, succeeded, and many times failed with almost all online strategies you can think of. It's been fun, and we've learnt a lot on the way. It's one of the reasons we're still here today, in the trenches building ROI and value for our local clients every day.

This inforgraphic provides an interesting insight as to how SEO has changed over the last 20 years. It's been a wild ride, but very cool.

SEO Plugins | Yoast vs All in One vs ????? Will Project Supremacy Kill Off both?

SEO Plugins | Yoast vs All in One vs ????? Will Project Supremacy Kill Off both? | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

Looking for the best WordPress SEO plugin? Check out our comparison of Yoast SEO vs All in One SEO Pack to find out which is the best WordPress SEO plugin.

Australian Content Network's insight:

The amount of times I've had a webmaster call me and say "I don't know what is going on, I've installed Yoast and my rankings are still the same",........well if I had a dollar for each time!

This is no fault of the user, although a little bit of research would certainly suggest to them that a simple plugin will magically ranking your website in the search engines, just doesn't happen. The problem is that there are many "gurus" out there spruiking the next magic bullet. Install this plugin on your website and you'll get a flood of traffic to your website and fill up your bank account. Plain and simple, it just doesn't work that way. Luckily, the wild west days of internet marketing are not as wild as they used to be, as legitimate experts begin to call out the snake oil salesman. That's how the free market works, and it's working in the world of SEO, but you will still find bogus courses being sold to the unsuspecting.

To be fair, the Yoast and All in SEO  plugins are legitimate, additions to any wordpress site......if setup correctly. Both have some very good functions and features, but it's not the plugin itself, but how they are actually used. For example, if you forget to "noindex" tag and category pages, you run the risk of creating duplicate content on your site.

I'll now throw a new addition into the mix, and I believe this will replace both Yoast and All in One in the months and years to come.
Enter Project Supremacy

This is a very cool new SEO plugin that I've been using for a number of months now and it's very, very powerful indeed. Originally it was created as an on page site builder, ensuring optimisation is sound, but since then they've added the full suite of features, the most important IMO, is the addition of schema.org JSON data, and the flexibility in which you can use it.

I really think Yoast may be Toast, and All In One will not be far behind.

You can find out more about the Project Supremacy Plugin Here.

RankBrain is now in the top 3 ranking signals - What is it and how can you leverage it?

RankBrain is now in the top 3 ranking signals - What is it and how can you leverage it? | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

Google's using a machine learning technology called RankBrain to help deliver its search results. Here's what's we know about it so far.

Australian Content Network's insight:

What is rankbrain?

In October 2015 Google released a machine learning artifical intelligence system called "RankBrain". It helps sort through the search results and provides an extra layer of relevancy.

Today it's thought to be in the top 3 most important ranking signals for the search results, so all webmasters regardless of whate industry they are in, need to be aware what it is and how you can be leverage the system

Machine Learning:  This is both amazing and scary, and it possibly could be the torch bearer for all manner of artificial systems that remove control from humans to machines, but that's a whole other story. With RankBrain, the machine itself can learn rather than be taught.

Part of the Algorithm: The system is not taking over how the search results are ranked, althought that may be just around the corner, rather it has been added to compliment the search results and is part of the current algorithm. Currently there are thought to be about 200 signals that Google uses to rank a webpage. Within that there are maybe another 10,000 variations of signals.

Straight from Google:

RankBrain is one of the “hundreds” of signals that go into an algorithm that determines what results appear on a Google search page and where they are ranked, Corrado said. In the few months it has been deployed, RankBrain has become the third-most important signal contributing to the result of a search query, he said.

To get more detailed information, visit the article above to really understand how you can use it to your advantage.

Howe Important Are Citations For Local SEO in Australia?

Howe Important Are Citations For Local SEO in Australia? | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

Google places a lot of emphasis on having correct name, address and phone number citations on the web. A consistent Name, Address, Phone Number (otherwise known

Australian Content Network's insight:

One of the most tedious, yet important tasks with local SEO (ranking your website in your local area), is building out citations correctly.
I found this article which provides a good explanation of how Google actually finds and verifies your NAP (name, address, phone number) information.
Much of the information you'll find online about building out citations correctly and citation sources is either relevant to the USA, or UK, and there is not as much information on building out Australian sources.
What is a Citation? A citation relevant to local seo is simply a directory type site that provides information on your business and NAP information.
Australian Citation Sources: In Australia there are around 200 sources you can use, and many of these are international type sites. The top 5 sites we always create first for any local business are:

Other important sources are:

  • hotforg.com.au
  • startlocal.com.au
  • poidb.com
  • tuugi.biz
  • zipleaf.com
  • womo.com.au

You can find a full list of other sources here.
The most important concept when building these is to ensure your business name, address and phone number is identical for each listing. This is how Google verifies your business.
How to Build Them? There are a number of places to go where you can pay to have them built such as brightlocal.com and whitespark.ca. They do a great job but it can get expensive. There are also some good outsources on fiverr.com
However we always put in the grunt work ourselves. This ensures they are completed fully without mistakes, and we can also create unique description for each citation, further increasing diversity and clarity.

Don't Make the Same VA Mistakes!

Don't Make the Same VA Mistakes! | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

10 common horror stories some entrepreneurs have with working with virtual assistants and how you can avoid them.

Australian Content Network's insight:

Having grown our business and subsidiary businesses to a point where it can't all be handled by one or two people, we have been through the process of hiring virtual assistants to help with a variety of tasks on a day to to day basis. It certainly wasn't easy finding assistants that met our requirements, and at times we thought it was just too difficult to find the right person for the job.
While we don't have a VA on the payroll as such, we do frequently, almost daily outsource many tasks to trusted digital experts. Most of theses tasks are organsied adhoc and on a task per task basis. This works for us. For others, they would rather have a full time VA to take care of daily tasks.
There are a few things to need to be aware of though when looking for a VA. Such as:

  • Do I really need a VA?
  • Am I willing to relinquish some control?
  • Am I able to properly train them?
  • International time differences
  • Will the quality directly influence performance?

These are just are few of the considerations. Finding them through sites such as Freelancer.com, Elance.com and a host of dedicated VA finding sites is the easy part. Training them and then monitoring is the tricky part.
We are also very clear in what tasks we outsource. Any task that is directly related to ours or a client website, we do not use anyone else except in house. Typical tasks we hire outsourcers for promotional video creation, coding issues, article writing, logo design, wordpress installation and other easily trained tasks that are repeatable.
From a purest point of view, I would rather hire a local here in Australia for daily tasks, but the economics simply don't work.
The above article provides a bit more information on the type tasks you could consider a VA could complete.

SEO Is Dead A Jon Snow | The Game Of Thrones Paradox

SEO Is Dead A Jon Snow | The Game Of Thrones Paradox | Silicon Dales Australia - SEO Adelaide Internet Marketing and Publishing | Scoop.it

This Sunday, the world will return to its proper axis as you and me and everyone we know sits back with a flask of grog and a huge roasted turkey leg to “enjoy” the newest season

Australian Content Network's insight:

OK, so the article above is something I came across today that while it maybe "blinged" in the approach - using The Game of Thrones to explain the current state of SEO - however the author does put some good points forward. There has been so much talk lately both in the SEO community but also with the general marketing public, that SEO is dead. "It just doesn't work anymore".

To me, at best it's just plain untrue, at worst it's fear mongering that is unjustified. OK, yes sites still get penalised for dodgy practices, yes it does take longer to rank new sites from scratch with links, yes negative strategies can still take a competitor out. On the flip side however, I've never seen ranking changes so fast with simple on page changes....I mean super fast. Make a change, grab a coffee and BAM, you've moved up a page or two. I'm not kidding, at that level it can be so powerful.

The article by Cillian at Kissmetrics, does make some valid points, mainly that if you try and expedite the process via "cheating" in various, ways, the process simply doesn't work anymore. Certainly not in any sustainable way. Build you're expertise - "the school of hard knocks" and learn. Understand that it's now more than just links. Social, Web 2.0s, traffic....it's all part of the puzzle. You need trust in your community, and you need a point of difference. In basic terms, you need to do what works, and then do it better than anyone else. It's that simple. Anybody can learn technical SEO, but those who work and do it better than most, will be the most successful.

A thorough and actionable SEO audit answers questions, solves problems and produces an array of benefits that you may have never anticipated. Learn more!

Australian Content Network's insight:

Conducting and SEO Audit on any website can be daunting. For out company, who works with a large number of sites daily, we find it a regular task that can take 5 minutes or 5 hours depending on the complexity.
We have developed a comprehensive system for auditing sites, and involves a large range of steps. These include all the obvious metrics such as:

  • indexation
  • site speed
  • inbound links
  • outbound links
  • GWT
  • 404 errors
  • Other errors
  • citations
  • etc, etc, etc

There are up to 50 or so different metrics to identify. The above article buy upcity.com is very comprehensive and is a really good start to the auditing process.

I would add a couple of other additions to the list:

  1. URL architecture - Does the site have a Silo URL architecture?
  2. Schema.org - Has the site had schema markup added and optimised for the site.

Siloed SItes:

Silo url architecture really is defined by the basic categorisation of pages and posts within a site. For a solid silo structure, the site should be arranged in cateogries, and subcategories, and correctly interlinked between them. The details are beyond the scope of the article, but we go into more detail here.

Schema.org:

Schema Markup can be defined as:

"In psychology and cognitive science, a schema (plural schemata or schemas) describes an organized pattern of thought or behavior that organizes categories of information and the relationships among them."

Google and the other major search engines have adopted this system in organising their data and it becoming more and more important in the semantic web system.

Websites with the appropriate schema have the code included in the site allowing Google to identify them much more accurately.

Certainly click through to Upcity's article to find out more about the in depth process of site auditing.

Google Posts Could Be A Game Changer For Small Business SEO If you haven’t heard the news Google is experimenting with a new feature on its search engine that could be a game changer for Small Busi…

Australian Content Network's insight:

Google has recently released a new product called Google Posts. If you haven't heard of it yet, more than likely you will very soon. Essentially it is a way for the search engine to display dynamic content in the search results. As the article above indicates, it all started with the US presidential election.

For local business seo, it could be a real game changer, with Google on rolling it out in BETA currently to a handful of local businesses.

Basically it works by users being able to share their content on the platform, in a carousel type fashion. For local businesses it may allow evergreen content to be shown in the SERPS in the carousel, which could increase clith throughs greatly.

The above article on business2community provides a good explanation of how the idea has come about and what plans Google may have for it.
