Space for all: Small, cheap satellites may one day do your bidding | NBC News.com

Space for all: Small, cheap satellites may one day do your bidding | NBC News.com | SMART SOLUTIONS FOR SMART LEADERS | Scoop.it

SAN FRANCISCO — Someday, swarms of satellites the size of a tissue box will be snapping pictures, taking environmental readings and broadcasting messages from orbit — but the entities controlling those satellites won't be governments.

Instead, they'll be hard-core hobbyists and elementary-school students, entrepreneurs and hacktivists. In short, anyone who can afford a few hundred dollars to send something to the final frontier.

The technological for this outer-space revolution already exists: It's a type of satellite known as a CubeSat, which measures just 4 inches (10 centimeters) on a side. The CubeSat phenomenon started out as an educational experiment, but now it's turning into a crowdsourcing, crowdfunding movement of Kickstarter proportions. And not even the sky is the limit.

The End Of Apps As We Know Them - Inside Intercom

The End Of Apps As We Know Them - Inside Intercom | SMART SOLUTIONS FOR SMART LEADERS | Scoop.it

The experience of our primary mobile screen being a bank of app icons that lead to independent destinations is dying. And that changes everything.

How we experience content via connected devices – laptops, phones, tablets, wearables – is undergoing a dramatic change. The idea of an app as an independent destination is becoming less important, and the idea of an app as a publishing tool, with related notifications that contain content and actions, is becoming more important. This will change what we design, and change our product strategy

.NO MORE SCREENS FULL OF APP ICONS

This is such a paradigm shift it requires plenty of explaining. Whilst it may not transpire exactly as I’m about to describe, there is no doubt what we have today — screens of apps — is going to dramatically change. Bear with me as I run through the context....

IBM discovers new class of ultra-tough, self-healing, recyclable plastics that could redefine almost every industry | ExtremeTech

IBM discovers new class of ultra-tough, self-healing, recyclable plastics that could redefine almost every industry | ExtremeTech | SMART SOLUTIONS FOR SMART LEADERS | Scoop.it
“Stop the press! IBM Research announced this morning that it has discovered a whole new class of... plastics. This might not sound quite as sexy as, say, MIT discovering a whole new state of matter -- but wait until you hear what these new plastics can do. This new class of plastics -- or more accurately, polymers -- are stronger than bone, have the ability to self-heal, are light-weight, and are 100% recyclable. The number of potential uses, spanning industries as disparate as aerospace and semiconductors, is dizzying. A new class of polymers hasn't been discovered in over 20 years -- and, in a rather novel twist, they weren't discovered by chemists: they were discovered by IBM's supercomputers.”

Google Is Reportedly Set To Carve Up Its Failed Social Network Google+ | Business Insider | SMART SOLUTIONS FOR SMART LEADERS | Scoop.it
Google may kill its social network, Google+, following Vic Gundotra's departure.Google is reportedly planning to dismantle its social network, Google+. Google will consider Google+ a platform rather than a product, TechCrunch reports, citing "multiple sources."This means that it will no longer exist as a social network aimed at competing with Facebook, but it still might be integrated into Google's existing products. The company has allegedly been shifting the teams that used to be at "the core" of Google+ and is moving more talent toward the Android team....

I must admit that I'm one of those people who was kind of irritated when I started to hear that Google+ was ANOTHER social network I had to worry about.  As if Facebook wasn't enough pain-in-the-ass.  However, I will admit also that any property that Google has is probably going to be impossible to ignore simply because they clearly are going to give it preferential treatment (just like Blogger).

How Google Picks New Employees (Hint: It's Not About Your Degree)

How Google Picks New Employees (Hint: It's Not About Your Degree) | SMART SOLUTIONS FOR SMART LEADERS | Scoop.it

Someone can do very well in college and not have what it takes to succeed in the real world – and vice versa. Bock went on to say that an increasing proportion of people hired at Google these days don’t have college degrees.  Bock then shared the five criteria Google does use when evaluating job candidates.  I was struck not only by the list, but by the order.  Here’s my understanding of what he said, and why it’s important for any job seeker:

What makes a great job candidate these days? You may be surprised to hear what the folks at Google think.

Keaton Toscano's curator insight, April 14, 1:08 AM

There is  popular cartoon going around, that plays off of a popular quote, that has a bunch of animals (students) lined up in front of a tree. A presenter (teacher) commands them to climb the tree. Obviously the array of animals, including a fish in a bowl, monkey, elephant, and cat, will all have varying abilities to accomplish the task. The bottom reads "Our educational system". There is a bit of truth to that, I think, which is why I advocate the introduction of practical skills into the education system. Learning to balance your checkbook and do your taxes is more important to some students, where advanced calculus may be more appealing to some as well.
