Office 2010 Quick Tips – Captioning Videos in PowerPoint | JISC TechDis Blog | sensory impairment | Scoop.it

To do this you will need to install the STAMP plug in for PowerPoint – this is free, but you may need to request it from your IT department. However, once you’ve done this the rest of the process is very straightforward.

First you need to insert your video. Go to the Insert tab, click on Video and browse to the one you want to use. A new ribbon – video tools – will appear with two tabs; format and playback.

Disabled people and the Web: User testing or Standards: which works best? | sensory impairment | Scoop.it
alistairm 's curator insight, June 4, 6:56 AM

Jisc TechDis and others have been saying this for years - accessibility standards are potentially useful but nowhere near as useful as proper user testing with disabled end-users. Here's the evidence.

iPads and tablets in the classroom - up to date guidance from RNIB

Via alistairm
alistairm 's curator insight, May 14, 12:25 PM

iPads are currently the most versatile and accessible tool for teaching and learning. However while the operating system has lots of inbuilt accessibility the accessibility of apps in the appstore is as varied as the app developers themselves. This guidance from RNIB pulls together some good advice - much provided by blind users themselves.

Guide Dogs Scotland calls for "talking buses" to be introduced across the country to help blind and partially sighted people.
Lisa Featherstone's insight:

These won't only assist blind and partially sighted people but anyone who struggles to read the route details on an approaching bus.  These could be people who find reading difficult or simply visitors to the area unsure of where to get the information they need.

Lisa Featherstone's insight:

Braille gives a user the experience and delight of literacy and reading, which is not replicated by the use of audio only.

Rather than making it obsolete, today's technology makes Braille even more accessible and portable to its users in the form of portable Braille Notetakers, transcription software, and refreshable Braille displays for computers.

Amazon's Kindle for iOS Updated with Accessibility | sensory impairment | Scoop.it

It's true! Amazon has updated its Kindle for iOS app with accessibility features for the blind--and it's an impressive offering. Here are all the details.

After playing around with the app, connecting my braille display and exploring tactilely and buying (more than) a few books to try out, I want to share some initial impressions and a general breakdown of what you can expect from the app.

Via alistairm
alistairm 's curator insight, April 11, 4:50 AM

If you want data on sight loss in the UK this is an excellent resource with regional data as well as data by type of sight loss. These figures represent individual lives, stories and struggles to fulfil educational potential. A good reason for learning to teach inclusively, taking advantage of the free TechDis voices (www.jisctechdis.ac.uk/voices) etc.

Angela C. Dowd's curator insight, April 12, 1:42 PM

This is a good find and I imagine can help in many ways...including fundraising. It would be a good tool for organizations like Blind Babies Foundation who provide family-centered services to support the child's optimal development and access to the world. Also for any organizations who serve seniors who many have progressively worsening macular degeneration and not understand how to get help.
