Australia needs a plan to protect the Outback's precious water

Australia needs a plan to protect the Outback's precious water | Virtual Musing: sensemaking and organising in the digital world | Scoop.it
The Outback covers 70% of Australia, and its water is precious and scarce. Yet there is no joined-up plan to monitor and manage Outback water, despite the wealth of species and communities that depend on it.

Spook meets Montie

Spook meets Montie | Virtual Musing: sensemaking and organising in the digital world | Scoop.it
When I married Brett, I kind of knew we would end up with a menagerie. I started it by insisting we get a dog when we had a suitable house, and Brett has just brought home the newest edition to the...

Sensemaking in Second Life

Amber Marshall's insight:

This article was published last year after I presented at the SLactions conference in Second Life. I'm still on my journey of investigating and articulating how sensemaking takes place in virtual worlds. It pays to look back at where you have come from in order to keep moving forward!

Blog | Login or Logout? Online work in regional Western Australia - Regional Australia Institute | Virtual Musing: sensemaking and organising in the digital world | Scoop.it
Independent and informed by both research and ongoing dialogue with the community, the Regional Australia Institute develops policy and advocates for change to build a stronger economy and a better quality of life in regional Australia – for the benefit of all Australians.
Amber Marshall's insight:

The four pillars for online work in remote areas revealed by this report are quite intuitive if not obvious. Yet it is important to actually do this this kind of research to substantiate policy and funding moving forward. I would like to see similar investigations in other states, including Queensland (my state of origin) the the NT (my new home).

Independent and informed by both research and ongoing dialogue with the community, the Regional Australia Institute develops policy and advocates for change to build a stronger economy and a better quality of life in regional Australia – for the benefit of all Australians.
Amber Marshall's insight:

This is great to talk about the diverse composition of regional Australia, rather than lumping everyone into one box. Now, how to virtually connect all the foundations?

Heidegger's notebooks reveal an early blindness to the Nazis' reality

Heidegger's notebooks reveal an early blindness to the Nazis' reality | Virtual Musing: sensemaking and organising in the digital world | Scoop.it
Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) is easily the most controversial philosopher in the 20th century. To a large extent this is due to his implication in Nazism, which is a scandal to some, a fascinating spectacle…

Introducing SL Go from OnLive - Second Life

Second Life has gone mobile. Good move, terrible promo video!

Amber Marshall's insight:

Second Life has gone mobile. Though still in beta, this will help make this virtual world far more accessible for practitioners of all kinds. Some big barriers to use have been the heavy demands on bandwidth and graphics . I think going mobile is a move in the right direction, especially in the age of mobile learning and telework. I do think, however, the promo video is absolutely terrible! Check it out.

Just got activity-based working? It’s about to change again | Virtual Musing: sensemaking and organising in the digital world | Scoop.it
Demographic and business changes will force architects and employers to reconsider use of space – again, Rosemary Kirkby says.
Amber Marshall's insight:

Coworking + telework. Physical + virtual. Not either/or, but both/and. Is this the way forward for the modern worker?

Digital literacy without an internet connection. Until we have connectivity in rural/remote Australia, these kinds of set-ups may be a way to reduce the number of people left behind in the digital age.

Trace rainfall | Virtual Musing: sensemaking and organising in the digital world | Scoop.it
This morning I woke up early and decided to take Spook for a walk before the sun broke over the horizon. It is now so nice and cool at that time. No need for a long sleeve shirt, hat, or sunscreen....
Amber Marshall's insight:

While this post is quite light-hearted, it underscores a key issue for people living regionally and remotely - access to telecommunications/internet and a willingness/capacity to use it are critical for well-being.

Springer and IEEE will be removing more than 120 papers from their subscription services after a researcher found they were computer-generated gibberish.
Amber Marshall's insight:
It is tempting to think if you don't understand something it is over your head and therefore must be good. Is this how these articles slipped through the cracks of the human reviewing process?
