State Sen. Horhn takes strong stance against crime in Jackson

State Sen. Horhn takes strong stance against crime in Jackson | Senator John Horhn | Scoop.it
State Sen. John Horhn, D-Jackson, said today that crime is running rampant in Jackson and it’s time to take a stand against crime.
John Horhn's insight:

Senator Horhn's Comments About Crime in Jackson
I called this press conference to speak out and to issue a call to action against crime in our Capital City. Jackson is a wonderful city. It has many assets and attributes that could make it a great city, but we are allowing the bad character of a few individuals to turn our capital city into a place where crime is running rampant. This is not how we should define ourselves nor have others define us. Our fellow citizens around Mississippi are afraid to visit their state capital. People who live here are not only afraid to venture out, they are afraid for their safety even in the sanctity of their own homes. Little children should not have to go to bed fearing that a stray bullet might find its way into their heart. Decent people should not have to worry that an intruder will force his way into their homes at all times of the day or night. Families on an outing should not have to worry that they may  be carjacked at gunpoint. This culture of fear and intimidation is affecting the business climate in the city and turning away companies and investors who might otherwise establish or keep businesses in Jackson. Lifelong residents of the Capitol City are pulling up roots and leaving town. The image of our city is being tarnished by the prevalence of crime here.
We need to decide what kind of community we want Jackson to be. Jacksonian must decide what is and is not acceptable. It is time that we in Jackson put our foot down and say that this pattern of lawlessness will not be tolerated. We must come together to get this problem under control so that crime doesn't continue to fester in our community. Toward that end, I am proposing three things:
- The first is to hear from citizens. No part of this city has been spared from this onslaught. Everybody's been affected. If you have been affected by property crime  or violent crime in the past 18 months in the Capitol City, I am asking you to join me here at the Capitol this Thursday at 5:30 so that we may hear from you about the nature of the crimes being committed and what you think are some solutions that might be implemented.
-The second objective will be to call for a multi-jurisdictional taskforce made up of law enforcement. We have all the tools we need right here in the Capitol City to get this problem under control. While JPD has been putting up a valiant effort, it is time that they joined forces with other law enforcement agencies to utilize other assets and tools that are based here. Therefore, within the next two weeks, I will ask JPD, the County Sheriff, DPS's Highway Patrol, MBI, MBN, ATF, DEA, FBI, and the U.S. Marshall to come together for the purpose of establishing a taskforce to combat crime in Jackson. We will also seek help from the DA's office and judges in this jurisdiction to criminals swiftly through the judicial system.
Finally, I will begin work to pre-file legislation addressing the issues of crime, education, and community reinvestment for the Capitol City which I hope will be taken up in the 2014 session.

Want to beat racism? Start a business | Senator John Horhn | Scoop.it

Nels Abbey writes about challenges faced by blacks in Britain to become entrepreneurs.  Same situation exists in most pockets of the U.S. We need more black-owned and operated businesses, but it's easier said than done. As black unemployment continues to skyrocket,  entrepreneurship is an important alternative. Key is finding proper resources and training.
