Content Curation: Truths, Threats, Motivations and Opportunities | Altimeter Group

This is a cross-post from Altimeter Group Researcher Jaimy Szymanski. I excerpted from the article:

"Curation is taking over the digital content scene. With related applications and platforms multiplying, the act of collecting and sharing content has become second nature for most of us.

When talking data it’s far simpler to look at all the content out there and curate, rather than analyze the gaps and create new, original content to fill them.

This brings up some unnerving questions as well:
- With curation on the rise, what effect will this have on the creation of new, interesting, valuable and thought-provoking content online?
- When (if at all) will curated content be accepted as unique content?
- What happens when curators far outnumber creators?

But, upon taking a closer look behind the why of curation, the researcher found potential value pulling some data from Trendstream.

***Motivations Behind Content Curation and Sharing:

1) Motivations behind curation are positive: to share a good experience, to help consumer pick out good product and to encourage company improvement.

2) Millennials share content focused on “self.” As generations get older, secondary motivation shifts to a bigger picture though, to helping consumers. Add to that the fact that many have grown up recognizing technology as a platform for both utility and self-expression or promotion.

3) Fostering expertise is among lowest motivations. I predict that curated content will increasingly be more accepted as “original” content over time, as long as it contains some unique insight or alteration.

***Where Curation Opportunities Lie:

Curation will prove to be a very positive trend for marketers who are looking to affect their audience via way of content marketing.

It’s quite possible that content curators will also begin to be recognized as influencers in their respective industries, and organizations will treat them as such.

I’ll end with a few final thoughts:

1) The amount of content curated will rise and fall in cycles, as shared content depends on original content creation to survive.
2) Organizations will weave curation into their content strategies, at the very least to ensure sharing of their content is as simple as possible for consumers.
3) Application development – both web-based and mobile – will continue to support the curation trend."

The Demise of Quality Content on the Web - The Rise of Great Content Curators

This a great blog post from Rian van der Merwe , describing the noise you can find on the web now, and especially content just created for SEO purposes or advertisers. As many, Rian is tired of it.

Rian speaks for many of us who are overwhelmed, overloaded with content that gives us no value at all. This is the problem

"I used to believe that if you write with passion and clarity about a topic you know well (or want to know more about), you will find and build an audience. I believed that maybe, if you’re smart about it, you could find a way for some part of that audience to pay you money to sustain whatever obsession drove you to self-publishing"'

Here's what caught my attention:

****The wells of attention are being drilled to depletion by linkbait headlines, ad-infested pages, “jumps” and random pagination, and content that is engineered to be “consumed” in 1 minute or less of quick scanning – just enough time to capture those almighty eyeballs[2]. And the reality is that “Alternative Attention sources” simply don’t exist.

The Scoopit team agrees!

My input:

****The Opportunity: This is the time for all good curators to come forward - 2012 will be the year of the content curator -

**Know your audience

**Know their pain points

**Find and select the best content, add your own opinions, information or anything that will provide more value for your audience

**Select only the best content, don't just aggregate links that add to the noise

**Become a trusted resource - many opportunities will come to you, it's your time to shine

Curating the curators #edtech20

Ever since social curation became a hot trend and platforms like Scoop.it started to democratize its usage, a question has been asked: if there are more and more curators, how do you curate the curators?

I believe we're building the answers to that and I like very much the guidelines given in this article by Robin Good - someone to definitely a to be put in the "good" curators group. It is great food for thoughts for the evolution of curation platforms and how to improve concepts we introduced like the Scoop.it Score, the first of its kind and that we started to experiment with a few weeks ago.

The whole debate makes me want to write a follow-up as there would be too much to say as just a comment. But in the meantime I recommend to read these guidelines as they're clearly very good points. Clearly everyone will benefit from levelling up the playing field in social curation and Robin is showing a clear path here.

One comment I'd make is that this post and this debate makes me really happy: a year ago, social curation had to demonstrate its value against algorithmic filtering as this Quora question illustrates. Since then, Panda gave a tough time to filters, which were already losing traction as I pointed out back then on TechCrunch.

Today, the debate has shifted to the next level. It's both fascinating and a great news for social media.

#Syntaclet Makes boring code look pretty using bookmarklet #edtech20

As a programmer it's very common to be surfing the interwebs for various code snippets and examples. The problem is many websites have poor methods for displaying the sample code making it hard to read.

What is Syntaclet?

Syntaclet is a bookmarklet, a bookmark which acts like a little computer program rather than taking you to a website. To use Syntaclet simply drag the bookmarklet to your bookmarks bar (or right click and choose "Add to favorites..."). Now anytime you are on a website you can simply click '{} Syntaclet' in your bookmarks bar and it will go to work making all the code on the website easier to read. It will also bring up the Syntaclet toolbar giving you some options.

That's all there is to it!

Content Curators Are The New Superheros Of The Web

"Yesterday, 250 million photos were uploaded to Facebook, 864,000 hours of video were uploaded to YouTube, and 294 billion emails were sent. No wonder content curation is one of the most important jobs of our digital age.

(...)

Which means it's time to enlist the web's secret power: humans."

I just love the way Steve Rosenbaum talks about curators, don't you?

He coined the term when we interviewed him at SxSWi and Steve definitely knows what he's talking about, being the author of Curation Nation.

He gives interesting guidelines to all would-be curators in this post: even if you're already one, you might find them useful. And if you're not a curator yet: "All you need is a web browser and a cape. The rest is up to you."

Content Curation Tools for B2B Marketing and the Key Role of Curator | Forbes

Content Curation tools are the next-generation digital content platforms having evolved from content aggregation (gathering links, like Google News) and social bookmarking tools (like Delicious and Digg). Most of these tools have been aimed at individual and/or consumer use to help manage and sort through the vast spaces of Web content.

The next-generation tools, like Curata (a HiveFire company) and Curation Station, are focused on B-to-B marketing with a value proposition focused on their ability to drive awareness by improving organic search, and provide organizations with an opportunity to build thought leadership. The key to this evolution is being the “curator.”

The curator is an editor who sorts through the content to find the information relevant to a company and/or its audience. Curators are not content creators. And this is where I think the challenge lies in using these tools for thought leadership.

Curation tools have the potential to deliver the following results:

- Reduce the time needed to collect research and/or develop the issue set
- Provide a real-time broad perspective on pain points
- Combine multiple content formats and platforms (tweets, video, etc.)
- Provide leverage for staff
- Be a ready-made vehicle for content testing and distributing.

Keep in mind, content curation tools are enablers. They are not the answer. To realize the potential value outlined above, and, as the research points out, satisfy the need for “original content,” it will still require a resource investment such as a person and the time to do it.

Communities of Practice

Professional communities formed around specific skill-sets (i.e. composite material engineering) or job descriptions (policy analyst) are the core of the community of practice approach. By linking people together based on professional domain, organizations can break down silos created by functional areas or projects, and generally build overall capacity in those skill areas.

Questions and answers are a foundation for communities of practice providing a simple mechanism for users to reach out to a group of experts to help solve a problem.

Document sharing and collaborating around documents is a core feature of a professional community. Places where people can ask, comment, blog and much more around a document or other work-related information is one of the important ways that community members collaborate.

Videos provide an engaging medium to transfer knowledge and expertise. Take a video of a subject matter expert answering company-relevant questions, and watch as users engage.

Blogs provide a simple way for subject matter experts or leaders to communicate with a broad audience.

Wikis allow a web-based mode for document co-authoring. Interested in creating a Wikipedia for certain areas of interest? No problem.

Experts and members are listed as a function of their contribution to the community and whether they are helpful, active, most networked, and more. Community experts are the emerging subject matter experts in your enterprise.
