Blackphone: Privacy for Lazy People

Blackphone: Privacy for Lazy People | Semantic Gnosis Web | Scoop.it
Those who want easy smartphone privacy will need to be willing to slap down $629 for it, the price tag on the phone that’s expected to be released in April.
Jan Bergmans's insight:

Abroad, Dutch telecommunications company KPN has already committed to buy 500,000 Blackphones to sell exclusively in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, says Janke, generating a couple hundred million dollars in revenue for the new company.

“I’m glad they think they can make money selling privacy,” said ACLU technologist Chris Soghoian speaking at a security conference in San Francisco Thursday. “The proof is in the pudding. My biggest concern is ongoing updates for Android. The Blackphone may be secure today but it needs regular updates to make sure it stays secure.”

There’s also the possibility that someone using the phone would download malware or a malicious app from Google Play, though the phone will scan apps and let users decide how much information they want to share with each.

Unbounded Robotics to Shut Down Due to Issues With Willow Garage Spin-Off Agreement - IEEE Spectrum

Unbounded Robotics to Shut Down Due to Issues With Willow Garage Spin-Off Agreement - IEEE Spectrum | Semantic Gnosis Web | Scoop.it
The robotics community loses a promising startup
Jan Bergmans's insight:
AutomatonRoboticsIndustrial RobotsUnbounded Robotics to Shut Down Due to Issues With Willow Garage Spin-Off AgreementBy Evan AckermanPosted 25 Aug 2014 | 19:37 GMT

IEEE Spectrum has learned that Unbounded Robotics, a spin-off of Willow Garage that developed the UBR-1 mobile manipulator, is currently "in the process of shutting down." The UBR-1 is no longer for sale.

Recently, a source (who asked not to be named) forwarded us an email from Unbounded Robotics CEO Melonee Wise. Our source received the message after requesting a quote for a UBR-1 robot:

"Unfortunately Unbounded Robotics is in the process of shutting down due to issues with our Willow Garage spin off agreement that prevents us from raising series A investment. Unbounded Robotics is no longer selling the UBR-1."

This is startling, and more than a little bit confusing. Spin-offs can have contentious relationships with their parent organizations, but it's not often that we see an abrupt shut down like it appears to be the case here. Unbounded launched to great acclaim by the robotics community, and it was ready to produce a capable, affordable, and highly desirable robot. The statement above says Willow Garage (whatever Willow currently is) supposedly prevented Unbounded—a company that it helped to birth—from raising funds, and that means that a serious and unforeseen disagreement must have happened virtually overnight. What we know is that we saw a lot of interest from investors in Unbounded when it won a start-up competition at RoboBusiness 2013, but apparently something in the agreement between the two companies has kept investors away.

We contacted Unbounded, and while they confirmed that the email is real, they weren't able to comment on the current state of the company or the cause of the shut down. An email sent to Willow Garage was not answered. Willow Garage's website has been offline [update: it's now online again], and its office at 68 Willow Road has another startup occupying it, so it's unclear what the current state of Willow as a company is.

Here's why the Internet works, "... because open standards allow every network to connect to every other network.  (So far...)   This is what makes it possible for anyone to create content, offer services, and sell products without requiring permission from a central authority.

It levels the playing field for everyone and it’s the reason why we have a rich diversity of applications and services that many of us enjoy today.

Russia’s Skolkovo Project Back On Track | TechCrunch

Russia’s Skolkovo Project Back On Track | TechCrunch | Semantic Gnosis Web | Scoop.it
The pace of change in Russia would appear slow at the moment. Recent and ongoing events in the Crimea and Ukraine suggest an inward-looking country that has..
Jan Bergmans's insight:

The Russian Startup Tour began in March and included startup pitch-offs in 27 cities before culminating in a one-day, showcase event held at the Skolkovo Foundation‘s Moscow technology incubator. The event is indicative of the growth Russia’s nascent technology startup scene; the foundation plans to bring the Startup Tour to more Russian cities in 2015.

The Skolkovo Foundation is Russia’s state-sponsored push to jumpstart the country’s tech ecosystem. It’s not just promoting startups through the multi-city tech tour and competition. It’s also building a 400-hectare site on the outskirts of Moscow. That site will be a hub for up to 30,000 workers when the project is completed in 2020.

At the finale of the startup tour held earlier this month, the spotlight was on Russian robotics. Presentations ranged from glorified Meccano creations with an emphasis on Heath Robinson machines to a much more impressive kickboxing robot.

The winner of the $26,000 nationwide startup competition was ExoAtlet, an ambitious robotics company that not only aims to improve the quality of life for disabled people (an area where Russia has certainly not led the world), but also to provide disaster relief in affected zones.

There were also two second prizes. One went to Radio Gigabit, a resident of Skolkovo’s Space Technologies and Telecommunications Cluster, and the other to Nanooptic Devices, a resident of the Nuclear Cluster. The Jury’s Choice Award (as well as the Open Stage special audience award) went to Ivideon, a designer of digital planar holography.

Live as if it’s your last day.. People who know they have CAA live with a ticking time bomb. As a result, they live intensely. What makes them happy, what do they want to avoid? Actually, everyone should regularly be on their toes, so that you get everything out of life. Live as if it’s …
Jan Bergmans's insight:

The disease is incurable, but it need not be. There is a solution. One that we want to find quickly since the enormity has become increasingly clear: 1 in 4 people over 60 get CAA. Unnecessary personal suffering that could be prevented.

People with the hereditary variant are the key to the solution. This group has the sad certainty of getting the disease at a young age. Because they can be examined before the onset of the disease, a cause can be discovered. A solution for them is a solution for everyone with CAA.

There is not enough money for research on this group. This is why the CAA Foundation was established, to remove this unnecessary ticking time bomb from many lives.

Richard Stallman's TEDx video: "Introduction to Free Software and the Liberation of Cyberspace" — Free Software Foundation — working together for free software | Semantic Gnosis Web | Scoop.it
Jan Bergmans's insight:
Are you in search of an easy way to explain to others what free software is and why it matters? Or are you perhaps wondering why you yourself should be concerned about computer-user freedom? If your answer is yes, then this TEDx talk by RMS is what you're looking for!

RMS was invited to give a TEDx talk at "FREEDOM (@ digital age)" in April and took the opportunity to explain the fundamentals of the free software movement to the general public. In this speech, RMS specifies the issue and makes the stakes clear; he explains what a computer is and who controls it, what the various implications of free software and of proprietary software are for you, the user, what you can do to stop being a victim, what the obstacles to computer-user freedom are, and how you can make a difference.

The TEDx talks are "designed to help communities, organizations, and individuals to spark conversation and connection through local TED-like experiences." At these events, screenings of videos, like this one, "or a combination of live presenters and TED Talks videos — sparks deep conversation and connections at the local level."

We hope you share the recording, to help raise awareness and inspire conversations and connections in your own circles, and introduce a friend, loved one, or acquaintance, to this "first step in the liberation of cyberspace."

European Central Bank Takes a Radical Step

European Central Bank Takes a Radical Step | Semantic Gnosis Web | Scoop.it
The central bank, trying to kick-start the sluggish euro zone economy and hold off deflation, will charge commercial banks to store their money.

Via TechinBiz
Jan Bergmans's insight:

The so-called negative deposit rate has never been tried on such a large scale and is a bid to push down the value of the euro and encourage banks to invest excess cash rather than hoard it in central bank vaults.

The European Central Bank cut its benchmark interest rate to 0.15 percent from 0.25 percent, and the deposit rate to minus 0.10 percent from zero. The rate cuts will take effect next week, on June 11.

The central bank will also begin offering four-year loans to banks at the benchmark interest rates, under conditions meant to ensure that lenders use the money to issue loans to businesses. For example, the central bank loans will be designed to discourage banks from using the money to buy government bonds.

Five Truths for Tomorrow's Marketer - Campaigns are Extinct | SDL | Semantic Gnosis Web | Scoop.it
Today’s customers orchestrate their own experiences from exposure to conversion to advocate. The conventional marketing funnel is now irrelevant and traditional campaigns are extinct.
Jan Bergmans's insight:
White Paper: Campaigns are Extinct

Millennial consumers orchestrate their own brand experiences on their time, across channels and devices with brands that they trust. As a result, campaigns no longer start with a contact list and stop with an email blast – they are continuous exercises, consistent across channels. Brands must break through personal junk filters with relevant, valuable and non-promotional interactions, for a longer-term view of building brand advocacy.
