I happen to enjoy diagramming sentences but I wouldn't teach grammar that way. 


"Focused on being correct, [students] never give themselves a chance to explore their ideas or ways of expressing those ideas. . . . We need to teach students how to write grammatically by letting them write."


As Ms. Cleary states, students can learn grammar as part of the process of writing because they then also learn about their styles of writing, they find their own voice, and they learn to think about the audience.
