When it comes to self-driving cars, it's not a question of the technology but of convincing drivers,' says Michael Toscano, CEO of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International.

Although the computer drives the car for people, not everbody is very accepting. Most people much rather drive themselves because they do not want to rely on a computer that might misfunction.  Once people accept the fact that the computer is safer than a human driver, the cars will be more common.

As the car drives on its own, it can detect other cars and pedestrians so the car can stop safely. Google is working on developing the technology to recognize pedestrians easier so the roads are safer.

Ford is test driving its new range of vans using robots. The mechanical drivers accelerate, steer and can stop for passing pedestrians and are capable of compressing 10 YEARS of wear and tear into a single test.

With sensors and radars attached to the front and back of the car, the computer will know when to stop if something gets too close. With this technology, the amound of accidents will dramatically reduce.

Self-driving cars now make it possible for blind people to drive. They simply say where they want to go and the car will drive them there by itself. Since the computer drives the car, nearly anybody can ride in the self-driving car by themselves.

As of right now most of the public cannot afford the car. However, as technology for the car advances the price of the car will eventually drop to where the majority of the public can afford it.
