Climate Change is an issue that affects some parts of the world greater than others.  The island nation of Kiribati is greatly impacted by the effects of the warming climate due to the fact that it is barely above sea level.  In fact, as we learned in class, the country is facing a "when not if" situation regarding having to leave their nation.  The government says it is to relocate with dignity rather than be unskilled refugees when they arrive in countries.  The president of the country, even though it is to late to stop the ocean from flooding his country, is still highly invested in preventing more land being lost from the effects of a rising sea level associated with global warming.  However, until nations such as India and China, as well as the United States try whole hardheartedly to prevent it and cut down on their emissions the trend will continue.  I can't imagine how hard it is to run a country that is in essence preparing for its own demise.  In fact, until taking this class, I was unaware of many of the small countries that existed in the Pacific Ocean.

This is a scary thought to lose your home and country.  I'm not sure the rest of the world will care unfortunately because this country does not produce something needed globally.  Is it possible to create a Waterworld of sorts (Kevin Kostner movie) or Esgaroth (The Hobbit- Lake town).  I know these are movie fantasy, but maybe they could create something like this.  Or find a backer to drop lots of sand on the island periphery to build it back up like Abu Dhabi's The World.  This would bring tourism I believe.  This would bring money, which would then sustain the Kiribati.  They need to get a highly visible celebrity involved.

This phenomenon is unfortunate.  Kiribati's existence is being threatened by global warming and the effect it has on rising sea levels.  Kiribati could be fully covered by water within a few decades.  The positive about this situation, however, is that its' government is being proactive and training the citizens in a multitude of different trades, so that they could be marketable elsewhere if they are forced to flee their homeland.

A cool feature about Google Classroom is how easy it is to share student exemplars. While you can still print out student work and pin it to the wall, you can now do this virtually also!

Classroom Folder

When students turn in work via Google Classroom an assignment folder is automagically created and the work for all of the students is in that one folder. This is great for grading since all work is in one place.

Student Exemplars

When creating an announcement in Google Classroom you have the ability to attach Google Drive files easily.Celebrate the excellent work of students by sharing selected student work with the class. Because Google Classroom is a closed environment you are protecting student privacy, celebrating student success, and allowing peers to learn from each other.

New ‘reset’ button discovered for circadian clock | self-directed_learning | Scoop.it

The discovery of a new “reset” button for the brain’s master biological clock could eventually lead to new treatments for conditions like seasonal affective disorder, reduce the adverse health effects of working the night shift and possibly even treat jet lag. The finding is reported in the Feb. 2 issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience.


“We found we can change an animal’s sleep/wake rhythms by artificially stimulating the neurons in the master biological clock, which is located in an area of the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), with a laser and an optical fiber,” said Douglas McMahon, Stevenson Professor of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University who directed the study.


Until now, neuroscientists had thought that the firing rate of SCN neurons was strictly an output of the biological clock’s activity. They did not think altering the level of neuronal activity could affect how the clock operates. But the Vanderbilt researchers have shown that stimulating and suppressing the SCN’s neurons in a fashion that emulates their day and night activity levels can force the clock to reset.


The study was done using mice. Neuroscientists have found that mice possess a biological clock nearly identical to that of humans with the exception that it is tuned for a nocturnal lifestyle.


The researchers used a new technique called optogenetics to manipulate the firing rate of the SCN neurons. The technique inserts genes that express optically sensitive proteins into target cells in order to make the cells respond to light.


“This puts clock neurons under our control for the first time,” said doctoral student Jeff Jones, who conducted the study with fellow doctoral student Michael Tackenberg.

Of course not all questions have this analytical ability. For instance, closed questions tend to limit the thinking choices available for students. The same with questions that promote factual recalling. Questions that emphasize the mechanical on the analytical are out of the list.

"As we employ the 1 to 1 experience, we need to ask two important questions. Is the 1 to 1 and the device about using technology, or is it about a more meaningful and engaging learning experience? Spending a day online for individual research can be a wonderful simple integration of technology experience, but might not be a true blended learning opportunity. Asking students to research and then collaborate with each other online in a collective experience takes this integration and provides more of a blended experience.

"The blended learning experience allows technology and the online experience to breakdown the traditional classroom allowing important transformation. One might wonder where on the spectrum of simple integration to blending learning a possible learning activity might be. I would like to share a lens of ten ideas that educators may wish to look at as they reflect on their 1 to 1 activity and classroom learning experiences that use technology . Sometimes it is just a simple tweak to bring out the wonderful possibilities of blended learning. Please feel free to read my ideas below that might allow you to use classroom technology to bring out a richer and blended learning experience."

Thanks to Jim Lerman for sharing this resourceful post by Michael Gorman on the topic of "Blended Learning".  

 

Recently I was traveling to a school district in western Kansas, along with a group of awesome education minds, to provide professional development.  It was during the drive west a close friend of mine brought up the topic of "Blended Learning" and how she planned to provide insight and engagement on the topic for her session.  We all agreed that one would probably find 8 or more differing definitions out of a group of 10 educators.  I just wish I had this article to share with her prior to the session.  The article does a nice job of breaking down and explaining "Blended Learning".

Although there are many documented advantages of learning online, some educators still question this innovative way of teaching because of technical obstacles, because they suspect or doubt its effectiveness, or because they are unfamiliar with the approach. Indeed, the teaching considerations for an online course, versus a traditional in-residence-based course, do change by necessity because of the different learning environments.


Making traditional course material digital, converting lectures to streaming video, and assigning tests or writing assignments online are not enough to convert the full classroom experience into avirtual one.


What is lacking in the virtual setting is the dynamic interchange among students and instructors. Although their concerns are valid, in-residence educators should find solace in learning that one of the most fundamental forms of teaching, the student-peer discussion facilitated by a knowledgeable instructor, remains as valid for mature-student distance learning today as it was for Socrates. This venerable method remains effective for online students for the same reasons it works in the classroom — because the discourse among students actually builds knowledge and keeps learning focused on their needs. Online, this Socratic method of teaching, also known as a “threaded discussion” or a “forum,” is an excellent distancelearning tool. All online instructors should consider using this method.

I agree that threaded discussions bring in the online interactions and exchange of knowledge. The danger is when such threads are not directed by the mentors or facilitators, the discussions can easily wander off to personal and sometime unnecessary issues.

The go-to activity for most teachers looking to add an activity to their online offering is the forum.  But  the activity is often ill thought through, the teacher doesn't participate themselves and as a result the forum fails to launch!

Plants and microbes are in a continuous arms race to maintain their predominance within their particular niche. Understanding the complexity of these plant–microbe interactions is of utmost importance as it can provide new insights into the mechanisms mediating disease processes and in turn inspire new plant breeding strategies. The International Society for Molecular Plant–Microbe Interactions (IS-MPMI) invited scientists from around the world to share their findings during the XVI International Congress on Molecular Plant–Microbe Interactions, which was held on the beautiful island of Rhodes in Greece. The congress was organized by the Agricultural University of Athens, the Hellenic Phytopathology Society, and the Hellenic Society of Phytiatry and provided over 1100 participants from 55 countries with the opportunity to present and discuss their current and future research. A great number of talks and posters were presented, however our aim within this report is to provide a snapshot of the discipline by focusing on just some of the exciting research and discussions which took place. The key topics discussed were virulence factors, epigenetic regulation, hormones, symbiosis factors, toxins, signaling pathways, microbe recognition, immunity, and pathogen diagnostics. Effector biology was also a recurrent theme in many plenary and concurrent sessions, indicating the importance of a topic that was also highlighted recently by a Virtual Special Issue in New Phytologist (see Kuhn & Panstruga, 2014). In addition to this, throughout the meeting next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques were described and shown to be shedding new light on long-standing issues in microbial ecology.

I’ve shared some of the reasons that I love Google Forms, including how they can be used to collect assessment data.  Google Forms can also be used for students to turn in information.  They might fill out a Google Form to submit a book recommendation, request extra help, or to complete an interest survey.

Google Forms have very long web addresses and it would be unreasonable to expect students to type in the whole thing correctly.  You can make the Google Form link smaller by using a URL shortener like bit.ly or goo.gl.  Another option is to connect the link to a QR code.  This way students can scan the QR code with an app like i-nigma on their mobile device and they’ll be taken directly to the Google Form.

You recently launched the DALMOOC, which you created with a focus on improving the social experience of learners – can you tell me a bit about the structure and format you have chosen?

We call it a dual layer MOOC, but we don’t mean that in a binary sense, it’s more like saying there are two pathways to take. You can either take a structured pathway – the way that you see with a lot of MOOCs that are run, say, on Cousera or edX – and that’s a heavy teacher focus with guidance. As in, you click through to the next level.

We’ve created a second level that we’re calling more of the ‘social layer’ and we’re basically asking students to engage with one another and to create artefacts that reflect their understanding and to share those artefacts.

In the learning process we need different cycles of scaffolding – there are times when you come across a new idea completely and you can’t really create and socialise around it effectively because you just don’t know anything. So, there may be a cycle by which the learner follows a traditional structure or pathway but as soon as they become more confident they move into social and more emerging formats. In a way they’re oscillating between these two elements of the MOOC: structure and linear versus emergent and social.

The actual title of this article is: "

George Siemens: ‘Students need to take ownership of their learning’

I focused on Siemens design of multiple pathways through a MOOC.  His description of the design as "oscillating between these two elements of the MOOC: structure and linear versus emergent and social." triggers some interest. 


Social engagement in any online class is a precious and memorable experience.

infographics present the greatest opportunity to increase the effectiveness of what is being taught. Designing visual representation of information is more than translating words to pictorials.  The construction involves filtering the information, drawing relationships, revealing patterns and representing the information as meaningful content.

The development between MDCs and LDCs are very different in a lot of ways. The Ebola epidemic is handled in two different ways because of the levels of development in countries. in MDCs there is more of a health indutry and can cure sicknesses much faster than those countries of less development.

It was sad that it took over 4 months for there to be declared an epidemic.  I think if this hit in the US or Europe then things would have been taken care of a lot faster.  Out of sight, out of mind till one trickled in then another.  Then we got scared.  But Africa needs to get it together and create a better continent with healthcare systems that work.  The doctors over there said it looked medieval.  I believe that and can't even fathom how horrible it was.
