How Self-Compassion Builds a More Positive Body Image Than Self-Esteem

How Self-Compassion Builds a More Positive Body Image Than Self-Esteem | Self-confidence Creator | Scoop.it
The study adds to a growing body of research suggesting that self-compassion can offer unique benefits that self-esteem cannot. This is because self-esteem is the practice of seeing yourself as above average. And in a world that is constantly comparing, keeping a high level of self-esteem may feel more like a never-ending challenge than a relief.
Don Karp's insight:

Self-compassion seems to me to be the way to go instead of self-esteem.

Self-esteem tied to aggression in male teens

Self-esteem tied to aggression in male teens | Self-confidence Creator | Scoop.it
They found that both extremely low and extremely high levels of self-esteem were correlated with aggressive behaviors in male teens
Don Karp's insight:

Here is the gist of this study:

"They found that both extremely low and extremely high levels of self-esteem were correlated with aggressive behaviors in male teens....Instead of focusing exclusively on modifying behaviors, it may be helpful to target the way adolescents perceive themselves....other potential factors might affect levels of aggression, pointing to culture, IQ and levels of community violence as possibilities....people with low self-esteem might be aggressive out of resentment toward their low status, and those with high self-esteem tend to be aggressive when their expectations are not met."

Research reveals the cultural origins of self-esteem

Research reveals the cultural origins of self-esteem | Self-confidence Creator | Scoop.it
(Medical Xpress)—Whatever our personal values, we largely base our self-worth on living up to the prevailing values of our culture, new University of Sussex-led research reveals.
Don Karp's insight:

"These findings suggest that the system for building self-esteem is an important channel through which individuals internalize their culture's values at an implicit level, even if they claim not to subscribe to these values when explicitly asked. These subtle processes can encourage people to act according to the expectations of the society they live in, thus helping maintain social solidarity."

This follows Dr Schwartz scoop on self-esteem as other esteem.

He tells how we need to be vulnerable to be authentic and not take cues from others to feel good about ourselves.

Holding Doors for Men Lowers Their Self-Esteem, Providing Further Evidence ...
Bustle
That's right, a new study shows that when men have doors held open for them by other men, they feel less confident and have lower self-esteem.
Don Karp's insight:

"Overall though, this goes to show not only that gestures as simple as door-holding are still highly gendered in our society, but also that gendered gestures actually pose a threat to male self-esteem."

Masculinity and self-esteem: good idea but stupid study and not enough follow-up with possible solutions.

An Embarrassingly Unscientific New York Times Op-Ed On Music And Success
Forbes
A recent New York Times op-ed by Joanne Lipman poses the question: “Is music the key to success?
Don Karp's insight:

ok--not scientific--I agree. But what about th original premise? I think that success, not defined here, might be better separated from the benefits of musical involvement. Being a "weekend warrior" type of musician, I can say that playing music, especially performing with others and with prior practice sessions, is one of the best ways I know to be with other people. It is creative and expressive--a unique and intimate communication between band members and with the audience, that cannot be found in any other way. This must have something to do with success, but what that connection is--its beyond me. I have heard of scientific studies in which children who learn music do better in all subjects than those who do not.

Kind of shallow as evidenced by this statement:

"The answer is simple..."

Just the mention of "self-confidence" can stir an assortment of emotions. It sounds so essential to well-being, doesn't it?
Don Karp's insight:

Well, the need for self-confidence is all pervasive, so why not Forbes. Although I am not a business type, I liked seeing the statistics comparing men and women, and even some of the suggestions of behavior in meetings. These could apply elsewhere.
