Farm Hack

Farm Hack | Seeds of Sustainability | Scoop.it

I love the concept behind FarmHack: people getting together to find local solutions before scaling up to off-the-shelf solutions. I wouldn't be quite so dogmatic about "mainstream agricutural research" as they are, but I think that an approach like FarmHack brings a much needed piece to the puzzle.

"FarmHack offers farmers new opportunities to work together on tools and innovations that will make our farms more sustainable and efficient. We also seek to collaborate with engineers, designers, architects and other non-farmer allies who want to help strengthen sustainable agriculture.

Mainstream agricultural research and development tries to solve farmers’ problems with top-down, chemical and energy-intensive inventions. FarmHack seeks to solve problems by helping our community of farmers to be better inventors, developing tools that fit the scale and their ethics of our sustainable family farms.

The Principles of FarmHack: Cooperative innovation by farmers to address their farms’ challenges. Collaboration with allies such as designers + engineers. Research and development driven by the needs and insights of sustainable farmers. Bringing farmers and allies together face-to-face at Charrette Events on farms, in grange halls and at institutions. Idea sharing that is open source, over the internet and face-to-face."

Bay Area butchers help consumers buy and cook for taste and economy

Bay Area butchers help consumers buy and cook for taste and economy | Seeds of Sustainability | Scoop.it

I'm glad to see people dealing with the issue of waste in animal-based food products. While I still have a lot of trouble easting most innards, I do believe in trying to use animal products as completely as possible. So after we have a chicken or a turkey, I throw the carcass in a pot and make soup. When I buy chicken breasts, I can't help but asking myself: "If everyone eats only chicken breasts because they're healthier, what happens to the rest of the chicken?"

This initiative not only tries to use the entire animal, which raises efficiency, it also ensures a cultural transmission which might otherwise be lost.

Japan: between tradition and high-tech | Seeds of Sustainability | Scoop.it

This is a fabulous example of how what is sustainable under one set of conditions doesn't work under another. Fields affected by the tsunami in Japan are now too saline for rice production. So how can farmers cope until the situation improves? Growing cotton!

Here's another example of a big chain trying to use its supply chain influence to improve farming practices. Although I find it a bit worrying that one of the managers on the Walmart had never seen a wheat field before trying to tell farmers how to be more efficient. So we'll have to see how this actually pans out.

East African Farmers to Benefit from Intercropping Bananas and Coffee

I love simple but clever adjustments like this one to improve agriucltural practices. I saw another example once of French farmers planting trees between swathes of wheat to absorb excess nitrogen and provide an additional source of income through lumber.

"Smallholder farmers in Rwanda are experimenting with the inter-cropping of bananas and coffee in an effort to better adapt to changing climate conditions and increase their yields."

"A major shift in farm policy and practice is needed if a growing world population is to be fed without over-exploiting scarce natural resources or further damaging the environment."

As to be expected this recent (June 2011) OECD report believes the market will be able to find the right balance between growth of global farming and environmental pressures.
