Apple acquires second screen TV startup Matcha.tv (scoop)

Apple acquires second screen TV startup Matcha.tv (scoop) | Second Screening | Scoop.it
Apple's latest acquisition could be the purchase of recently shut down second-screen TV/video app Matcha.tv, according to a source with knowledge of the deal that asked to remain anonymous.
pluk®'s insight:

This news didn't really make it out of the venture capital ecosystem, but I think its an important indicator of what's next in the way of disruption for TV Networks.

This is what Apple really mean when they talk about 'Apple TV' - they want to build a market place driven out of a 2nd screen app.  They want to do to TV what they've done to music, books and mobile apps.

Native Mobile Experience More Effective Than Banner Ads: Study

Native Mobile Experience More Effective Than Banner Ads: Study | Second Screening | Scoop.it

"Voucher codes, QR codes, and brand mobile websites are said to drive the most engagement from consumers compared to mobile banner ads"

pluk®'s insight:

This is only logical given people request native experiences and native experiences are often able to access software meta data and hardware utilities to be more relevant and engaging.

The key question now that mobile usage has become ubiquitous is how can we get the two environments to work more closely together.

Andy Lark: “We are dealing with a plus one squared” | Second Screening | Scoop.it

“There is no such thing as multitasking. People talk to me about the second screen, the third screen, the screen that is 8 inches, the screen that is 11 inches – that is all garbage.

There is only the screen you are looking at. The reality is, increasingly people are looking at what’s in their palm.”

The Operator as an App: A practical, not philosophical debate

The Operator as an App: A practical, not philosophical debate | Second Screening | Scoop.it

With the ‘Operator as an App’ model starting to generate serious interest among at least a number of Pay TV providers, the viability of apps-only delivery was high on the agenda at Connected TV Summit.

pluk®'s insight:

An configurable EPG that aggregates STB and IPTV content will truly revolutionise the viewing experience for consumers.  Does anyone know of a technology that does this or a start-ups working on it?

pluk®'s insight:

I've stated in the past that I don't believe a single game console brand will get enough market peneration to be a long term player in 2nd screen and I still believe that will be the case.  In the meantime take a look at what Microsoft has done with the new Xbox.  A real glimpse of what we can expect interaction wise - I just think it be share more across screens.

Is Network TV in the USA Tanking? Some American TV Analysts Think So.

Is Network TV in the USA Tanking? Some American TV Analysts Think So. | Second Screening | Scoop.it

Reading Brian Stelter in The New York Times certainly indicates that numbers are falling and brands are seeking solace with Big Cable over Networks. Broadcast ratings in the key 18-49 demographic tumbled by 17% during the winter months when compared with a year earlier, according to Goldman Sachs, which called the decline: "the sharpest pace on record." NBC and ABC are lucky to get five million to tune in to anthing ...

pluk®'s insight:

When you bring all the commentary together as this article has done, you can see its not just a few lone voices talking about radical change in the TV ecosystem, but a whole chorus backed by some solid statistics.

One that really interested me was:

62% of TV viewers pick up the phone as soon as TV advertising break starts. (Nielsen).

I see this as the opportunity for marketers - make great ads that people can connect with.

pluk®'s insight:

Stating that advertisers simply need to increase their mobile display advertising spend in to more closely resemble to the time spend on mobile as some other commentators have is over simplifing what the data is actually saying.  This article is well thought through and supported by good data.  My believe is that if 81% of people browse during sequentialy activity then the challenge is to ensure the brand engagement is maintained through the transition - the inital discovery is trigger by the primary screen - not an ad in the 2nd.

How the Second-Screen Experience Could Make Movies Even Geekier in Theaters

How the Second-Screen Experience Could Make Movies Even Geekier in Theaters | Second Screening | Scoop.it

"Imagine, if you will, a “Second-Screen Experience” as one of the screening options at your local theater alongside the 3D, IMAX 3D, IMAX 2D, and standard 2D screenings. When you buy a ticket to the second-screen format for Star Trek Into Darkness, for example, it's accompanied by one of those pixelated QR codes you can scan with your smartphone or tablet. Scanning the code allows you to download a program or otherwise receive access to all sorts of additional content (such as deleted scenes, character bios or other special features), but also offer material tied to the events on the screen as they're happening."

Selling Smart TVs with erections, violence and prostitutes :: StopPress

Selling Smart TVs with erections, violence and prostitutes :: StopPress | Second Screening | Scoop.it

Dumb TVs are out. Smart TVs are in, although several studies show very few actually use the TVs for their intended purpose or even connect them to the internet because, as Wired says, "Smart TVs are the literal, biblical devil." According to NPD, "fewer than 15 percent of smart-TV owners are listening to music, surfing the internet or shopping on their TVs." But BGH is trying to change all that with a new campaign via Del Campo Saatchi & Saatchi and Primo that shows a man with an annoying erection, a man getting punched in the face and a man looking for a prostitute—and all of them like to send emails to actors from their TV.

pluk®'s insight:

The key to making a smart TV smart is not in trying to change consumer behaviour away from smartphones and tablets, but by providing smart utility that makes people want to use it as a device.  An EPG that unifies all linear and IPTV content would be a good place to start.

Angelo Santa Ana's curator insight, July 12, 2013 3:51 PM

Who really is going to send these emails? Why are we turning TV's into compueters?  I've already turned my computer into a TV. I have a 2nd monitor to watch TV while I work. And take breaks on social media. I guess that's better than a smoke break. TV needs something else to enhance the user experience. Most people just like to sit eyes glazed to the TV after a long day at work.

It's the End of TV as We Know it?

It's the End of TV as We Know it? | Second Screening | Scoop.it

"Trying to strip that freedom back from consumers because the Internet is coming to the Big Screen and the Second Screen will be a huge controversy. Consumers don't want a Chinese Wall around their Internet, and it's much harder to add regulation (Internet) than it is to strip it back from broadcast television. Though they may try to meet in the middle, I suspect it's a battle that will end up in industry self regulation rather than government. HbbTV is not going to save them. There are just too many other players coming from all angles."

US Cable Cutting Conjecture Now a Certainty?

US Cable Cutting Conjecture Now a Certainty? | Second Screening | Scoop.it

"A recent report from Leichtman Research Group found that major multi-channel video providers had a net loss of about 80,000 subscribers over the past year, compared to a net gain of about 380,000 over the prior year. This marks the first time there has been a net industry-wide subscriber loss over a four-quarter period (since LRG began tracking the industry over a decade ago).

First-time ever annual industry-wide losses reflect a combination of a saturated market, an increased focus from providers on acquiring higher-value subscribers, and some consumers opting for a lower-cost mixture of over-the-air TV, Netflix and other over-the-top viewing options," said Bruce Leichtman, president and principal analyst for Leichtman Research Group, Inc. "The traditionally weak second quarter is sure to show additional net subscriber losses, but it is unlikely that these current modest industry losses are a harbinger of a more dramatic near-term market decline."

pluk®'s insight:

Its not only the Network companies that are lossing viewers (see pervoius article), its the cable companies as well.

Question that should be asked now is how quick will the decline be? And how quickly can marketers adapt?

Are the days of the 30-second TV spot numbered? - Brand Republic News | Second Screening | Scoop.it
Trevor Beattie recently announced the death of the 30-second TV ad, to some surprise. Is he right, Alasdair Reid asks. - Brand Republic
pluk®'s insight:

A dead notice for the 30 sec TVC is certainly a good way to ignite debate around how changes in the way consumers consume media will redefine how brands use linear and OTT TV.  I certainly feel that the starting point for consumer discovery of relevant branded content will change and this will in turn futher evolve how goods and services are purchased.  However, I think the 30 sec TVC's will play a role in this evolutions for sometime.  Welcome your thoughts?
