CREATING VIRTUAL WORLDS IN A PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL USING SIM-ON-A-STICK

Abstract:

Virtual worlds are highly immersive, engaging and popular computer mediated
environments being explored by children and adults. Why then aren’t more teachers using
virtual worlds in the classroom with primary and secondary school students? Reasons often
cited are the learning required to master the technology, low-end graphics cards, poor
connectivity and the firewall. A solution to one of these barriers is to use a virtual world
that can operate inside the firewall locally on school computers. The virtual world Sim-ona-Stick provides a four region virtual world on a USB flash drive that is free and fully
functional without accessing a network. Sim-on-a-Stick was used in a public primary
school in regional Australia during term one 2012. This paper presents a case study
outlining the implementation and integration of virtual worlds by a pre-service teacher,
classroom teacher and her class.

O Second Life ajudou?

Tangle finds partner for new open grid - Hypergrid Business

Tangle finds partner for new open grid - Hypergrid Business | Second Life and other Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it
With OSgrid down for three months and no news from its managers about when it is expected to come back up, other grids have been stepping up to serve its users.

Most recently, Tangle Grid launched the open Tangle OS grid at the beginning of October.

That grid is now being replaced with a brand new grid, the Atek Grid, which will be a free-to-connect grid open to both people running regions at home and third-party hosting providers.

However, Atek will be a commercial grid, with a for-profit component, premium memberships, and in-world currency. It will be hypergrid-enabled, however.

The Psychology of Immersion in Video Games

The Psychology of Immersion in Video Games | Second Life and other Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it
Along with “OMGDUDESOAWESOME” one of the words that gamers like to toss around when describing their favorite titles is “immersive.”1 But what exactly does that mean? And what makes a game immersive? Ask 5 people and you’ll probably get 10 opinions, but psychologists have been studying immersion in various kinds of media for decades so they could probably shed some light on those questions.

Except they don’t call it “immersion.” Instead, they call it “presence,” which, admittedly, isn’t as cool. Regardless, researchers have identified several kinds of presence in regards to how we perceive media but it’s spatial presence that I think comes closest to what gamers think of as “immersion.”

CultureLab: Storytelling 2.0: Adventures in a virtual reality cave | Second Life and other Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it
A virtual reality simulator may seem an unlikely home for writers but they're using it to invent a new art form, says e-lit pioneer Robert Coover.

And if you want to know about the future of storytelling - or its past - Coover is the man to ask. A prolific novelist and critic, Coover founded of the Electronic Literature Organization and is currently a professor of literary arts at Brown University in Rhode Island, where he teaches electronic writing. I asked him how far storytelling has come, where it's headed and what it means to write literature in a 3D virtual reality cave.

OSgrid halfway through third data recovery attempt - Hypergrid Business

OSgrid halfway through third data recovery attempt - Hypergrid Business | Second Life and other Virtual Worlds | Scoop.it

OSgrid has successfully recovered 1.9 terabytes, out of 3.5 terabytes total, grid president James Stallings II said during a conversation on OSgrid’s Internet Relay Chat channel yesterday. The conversation was reposted on OSgrid’s forums by grid administrator and OpenSim developer Allen Kerensky.

Stallings — who was posting under the user name “leTwitch” — did not say how much longer the recovery would take, or in what form OSgrid would be once it came back up.

Unlike smaller grids, which use mySQL databases for their assets, OSgrid uses a structured file system, he said. There are a total of 21 million files in OSgrid’s system that have to be recovered.

This is the third and last recovery attempt for OSgrid.
