CREATING VIRTUAL WORLDS IN A PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL USING SIM-ON-A-STICK

Abstract:

Virtual worlds are highly immersive, engaging and popular computer mediated
environments being explored by children and adults. Why then aren’t more teachers using
virtual worlds in the classroom with primary and secondary school students? Reasons often
cited are the learning required to master the technology, low-end graphics cards, poor
connectivity and the firewall. A solution to one of these barriers is to use a virtual world
that can operate inside the firewall locally on school computers. The virtual world Sim-ona-Stick provides a four region virtual world on a USB flash drive that is free and fully
functional without accessing a network. Sim-on-a-Stick was used in a public primary
school in regional Australia during term one 2012. This paper presents a case study
outlining the implementation and integration of virtual worlds by a pre-service teacher,
classroom teacher and her class.

YouTube gets 360 degree upgrade

Google released an update for its YouTube app this week with support for both standard and immersive 360 degree video.

The update is currently only available for Android devices, but an iOS version is expected soon.

Users without virtual reality headsets will be able to turn their phones or tablets while watching the 360 degree videos to see different angles.

VMM will be in Beta for at least a month. The next steps after Beta will be:

Release VMM to all Merchants.A month after the release, automated migration of Direct Delivery listings will begin. Magic Box listings will need to be manually migrated.After migration has completed, Xstreet and Magic Boxes will be shut down.

Astaeria is a "first-person poetry visualizer" by Emma—select a poem, and an abstract world of colors and shapes blossoms around that poem, with procedurally-generated music.

The game comes with eight poems, from Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Kubla Khan to Sylvia Plath's Lady Lazarus, and the music is arranged by composer Matt Read. It's a wonderful ambient experience for any poetry fan, or for anyone who likes to imagine that a verse can be a place, that a word can be a tone, a note.

Quick mesh rigging how-to

 

All I wanted was to take a Damien Fate rigged mesh skirt, tweak it a little bit in Blender, and import it into OpenSim. But for some reason, bringing it into Blender destroyed the rigging.

Kathleen Watkins, also known as Serene Jewell in-world, teaches free Blender classes on Kitely. (Her next one, Intro to Blender for Absolute Beginners in on Thursday, July 2, at 10 a.m. Pacific  time. Hypergrid teleport to grid.kitely.com:8002:Waymarker 88221).

She showed me how to do it, step by step, until I could do it on my own. I’m grateful to her help, and now share the process with you.
