The life cycle of a honey bee is presented as an example of complete metamorphosis, the development of an insect from egg to larva, then pupa, then adult. Moths, butterflies and wasps also develop with complete metamorphosis.

This a wonderful video demonstrating the honey bee life cycle. This activity was scooped via teacher tube. Students will learn more about the term metamorphisis, larva and pupa. They also get to explore the different characterisitcs of a butterfly, wasp and honey bee.

The USA National Phenology Network has built an interesting map of plant and animal life in the United States. The map allows you to see where various plants and animals have been observed and reported to USA NPN. You can search the map by animal, plant, or location. The map includes a timeslider that can be used to visual the life cycles of the plants and animals on the map. Users of the map can add climate overlays to it too.

In this activity, students are introduced to Google Maps. They learn map skills as well as facts about the types of plants and animals found in the different regions. Students will also discuss weather and climate. This is an awesome cross curricular activity.

This is a preschool activity that can be modified into a second grade activity. Students are given plastic box that is divided into parts. Each part contains objects that must be arranged according to its life cycle. To differentiate this activity students can bring their own objects, organize them, and share their findings with their classmates.
