Is selecting a preferred domain in GWT important?

Is selecting a preferred domain in GWT important? | Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Marketing | Scoop.it
We had a question the other day asking if a site owner should use Google Webmaster Tools when setting up and running their site. The simple answer in our opinion is yes. If you’ve never created a webmaster account it can be daunting, and even though it is simple to use once you’ve got your head around it, it can take a bit of time to understand all the functions. There are also some “hidden” functions within the tool that are easily missed for the uninitiated. In this post we will be discussing specifically the options of selecting a preferred domain and country settings. When you login to webmaster tools, you have the option to set which domain you would like Google to render in the search results, and essentially treat as your domain. There are actually four versions of your domains: www.yourdomain.com www.yourdomain.com/ yourdomain.com yourdomain.com/ Google Webmaster tools allows you to select either the www version, or the non www. version.  There is also a third option which allows you to select “don’t set a preferred domain”. Click on the image to enlarge.   Which Version Should You Choose? It actually doesn’t matter which version you select. What matters is that whichever you select, you keep it in mind when creating content, linking to your site, and promotion of your site. We like to use the non www version, simply because it is shorter and easier to remember and view. Google will render the non www in all the search results. Why Does it Matter? When you choose a preferred domain webmaster tools has been told that you would like that domain to be your primary domain and it will essentially use that domain as the canonical URL.  So when someone links to your site, regardless of if they use the www or non www version, it will count the link to the domain you have selected. If you don’t choose a preferred domain, there is the potential that the links pointing to your domain are not fully utilized if some are going to both domain types.  If nothing else, it tells Google that there is no confusion, this is my domain. Does It Make A Difference in The SERPs? We’ve seen mixed results. However we have definitely noticed improvements in rankings for sites with a relatively small amount of links, i.e a new or immature site, by selecting a preferred URL. Larger sites that have a strong link profile, and high diversity in their link profile, we’ve seen improvements, and also no change. Effects on Data Showing We had examples where a new client has signed up and when we check webmaster tools there is either no data, or limited data being shown, such as search queries, links to the site etc. This can be for a number of reasons, but one of the most common is the incorrect URL has been selected and when changed, viola, that data appears. When changing from one URL to another, you [...]
