Four Responsive Email Layouts

Four Responsive Email Layouts | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

Recognizing the industry needed a scalable design strategy that acknowledged the growing stable of web-enabled devices, Ethan Marcotte coined the term “responsive web design.”

Designing responsively means planning for a site to span and appropriately adjust to a range of screens and resolutions, rather than creating unique interfaces or experiences for each.

Marcotte’s recent book, also titled Responsive Web Design, defined the idea as having three key pieces:

1. Flexible, grid-based layouts 2. Flexible images (and media) 3. Media queries

Why Is Google Penalizing My Exact Match Keywords?

Once you’ve spent well over a decade mastering the art of the ideal pay-per-click campaign structure, you tend to start taking certain so-called “best practices” on faith. Concepts like device-segmenting and geo-segmenting becoming no-brainers, not even worth the time it takes to question whether or not they are a good idea. However, a recent issue with a new client has made me rethink and question everything I thought I knew about PPC...

PageRank: Is There Anything It Can’t Be Applied To?

PageRank: Is There Anything It Can’t Be Applied To? | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

We’ve seen Google’s PageRank algorithm applied to cancer outcome prediction and used to determine molecular shapes and chemical reactions. Now, PageRank is being used to reveal soccer teams’ strategies.

MIT’s technology review points to a paper from Javier Lopez Pena at University College London and Hugo Touchette at Queen Mary University of London, analyzing soccer strategy, and using PageRank in the process.

The abstract for the study says:

We showcase in this paper the use of some tools from network theory to describe the strategy of football teams. Using passing data made available by FIFA during the 2010 World Cup, we construct for each team a weighted and directed network in which nodes correspond to players and arrows to passes. The resulting network or graph provides a direct visual inspection of a team’s strategy, from which we can identify play pattern, determine hot-spots on the play and localize potential weaknesses. Using different centrality measures, we can also determine the relative importance of each player in the game, the 'popularity’ of a player, and the effect of removing players from the game.

Cutts: Infographic Links Might Get Discounted In The Future | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

In an in-depth interviewbetween Eric Enge and Google’s head of search spam, Matt Cutts – Cutts said that Google may discount the value of links generated by infographics.

Matt Cutts told Eric:

This is similar to what people do with widgets as you and I have talked about in the past. I would not be surprised if at some point in the future we did not start to discount these infographic-type links to a degree. The link is often embedded in the infographic in a way that people don’t realize, vs. a true endorsement of your site.

4 Simple Tips to Increase Post Readability

4 Simple Tips to Increase Post Readability | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

It’s normal for bloggers to have varying post lengths. Sometimes we can go for a quick 300-word post (just the specifics) or a lengthy 1,000-word post (really detailed ones). Whatever the post length is, there’s one sure challenge- to make sure that your readers would actually read it from start to finish. Or at least most of it.

In reality, with the large multi-tasking involved in the internet, people rarely have the time to fully focus on a post and read it from the first to the last words. Even if you manage to draw their attention, you’d have to realize that your content will be skimmed just to get to the main essence...

Google Launches SERP Menus

Google Launches SERP Menus | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

Yesterday afternoon I noticed that Google’s search engine results page (SERP) included clickable menus for select websites. [1] Here is a screenshot: If you click on a menu item, it loads another group of links. In addition, it loads a bit of text from that particular section of the website. For instance, here is another screenshot, after I selected the “About Us” menu item:

Why would Google include menus in its search results and what are the implications for searchers, advertisers, and website owners?...

19 Reasons Your LinkedIn Headshot May Be an Epic Fail

19 Reasons Your LinkedIn Headshot May Be an Epic Fail | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

Early this year, MarketingProfs ran a great article by William Arruda on personal branding trends for 2012. The first trend he listed was about the value of having a quality headshot.

Unfortunately, not enough people are acting on Arruda’s fine suggestions. As evidenced by the massive and ever-growing LinkedIn network, the personal branding story is far from reaching consensus with us in the working masses. So, I must speak up!

What is that you say? You HATE how you look in photos? Welcome to the club. But fear not! Anyone can look great, especially in the micro-real estate that is the LinkedIn photo. You just need a little help. (I’ll talk more about that at the end of this post.)

After carefully combing through several hundred LinkedIn photos (offered via the page that says “People I May Know”), I have come up with these 19 personal epic fail photo categories.

Ryan Satterfield at Planet Zuda posted an article about Google exposing private info by indexing other sites’ databases, which he says includes social security numbers and credit card numbers.

“If you’ve given a site your credit card number or social security number, then there is a very high chance it is in Google search,” he writes. “This information is very easy for anyone to find, especially for cyber-criminals because Google has made it so anyone can do a Google search with the words filetype: and then the extension for ‘virtual notebooks’.”...

Is Facebook Bing’s Secret Weapon To Beat Google?

Is Facebook Bing’s Secret Weapon To Beat Google? | Search Engine Marketing Trends | Scoop.it

One of the strongest references and trust points for any product or service is for a friend to recommend a product or service. It happens every day, a friend asks you “Do you like the Kindle?” or “I noticed you have an iPhone, what do you think of it?”. It can happen at a party, at work or even online via email or Facebook.

I recall a community event we were planning and at the first meeting one person had an iPhone by the time we finished the organisation of the event a couple of months later everyone had bought one…the power of “word of mouth”!!
