Always amazing that finds like this are news.  Seriously?  The brain is wired for challenge....surface learning and learning without purpose and understanding is not challenging. This is one of the biggest differences between American education and other countries.  We cover twice the material in our textbooks while others go deep.  What difference does it make?  From my observations, international students are more likely to connect the material in creative ways, actually recall the material because they can connect it, and end up with a mind more interested in learning.

The cost of disengagement in CoPs: A recent study by Gallup showed that worldwide, 87 percent of employed people are “not engaged” or “actively disengaged” at work, which means that they’re emotionally disconnected from their workplaces and thus less likely to be productive. Sometimes these disengaged employees are outright toxic to the organization. The cost is high for countries as well as companies. In the United States alone, Gallup estimates that the cost of disengaged employees could be between $450—$550 billion per year. In Germany, that cost is estimated at 100 billion euros per year.
