OK! I have had this Leica Monochrom camera for about 18 hours and have only shot a few things around the park and my house but did manage to make a quick 1st look video. 1st thoughts on the Leica Monochrom? It looks like an M9, feels like and M9, works like an M9 and even smells like an M9! Yep, basically, this is an M9 with a modified M9 sensor. No color channels. Pure B&W. Monochrome.

Due to lens productions costs industry wide, SLR Magic has just raised the price of their 50mm T0.95 Hyperprime lens to $4995. I asked Andrew, head honcho over at SLR Magic why this was and he stated it was all due to cost of materials going up. Sony told me this as well as Leica so it is a true statement.

Something’s brewing in Berlin. And it’s not the beer. Your intrepid and sleepless FDTimes reporter is here to attend a major LEICA product announcement on Thursday, May 10. Tonight is the overture, the warm-up for things to be revealed. Andreas Kaufmann and Alfred Schopf explained that the Berlin event was planned because there are too many new product announcements to wait for Photokina in September.

In light of the speculation surrounding the upcoming Leica press event in Berlin - expectation is high for an M10 announcement - a few of us here in dpreview's Seattle office took the opportunity to shoot briefly with the Leica M9-P and a selection of current M lenses. In this article we'll share our experiences using the Leica rangefinder system, not in the context of our normal studio tests and analyses, but out in the real world as a photographic tool.

Had a quick chat with my buddy Dana Barsuhn, a fellow street photographer from Los Angeles and former attendee of my Intermediate Los Angeles Street Photography Workshop. For those of you geeks who are curious, he shoots B/W Tri-X film on his Leica M4, with a 35mm Zeiss Lens. Also featured in the video is his new toy, the Contax T3 he just picked up for snapshots.

For the last week I had been able to see the highest building, the Empire State Building from my bed at the Ace Hotel five blocks away. And when a friend recommended that it was actually worth going through the painful experience of being a tourist to see the amazing architecture, I decided "why not?"

Just got a mint (used) Leica MP from Bellamy in the mail and have been using it the last 3 weeks. I was using my Leica M6 for the last several months, but the M6 I had gave me some funky issues (my shutter would get stuck at around 22 shots – and it broke on 3 different occasions while traveling). Now I’m using the MP as my main camera, and the M6 as my backup camera while traveling.

Fujifilm has officially unveiled its promised adapter to allow the use of Leica M-mount lenses on the X-Pro1. Unlike third-party adapters, but in a similar manner to the Ricoh GXR Mount A12, it's capable of storing up to six user-created lens profiles to correct distortion, vignetting and corner colour shading, which can be recalled by pressing a Function button on the side of the adapter. The camera can show framelines in its unique hybrid viewfinder for 21mm, 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm lenses (though not, oddly, for 50mm). For other focal lengths the camera's electronic viewfinder or rear screen will show a preview with 100% coverage of the field of view. To make full use of the adapter, a firmware update for the X-Pro1 (version 1.10) will be made available in June 2012.

The focus of Leica’s May 10 announcement landed in my hands a few days ago (not counting the X2, which was reviewed here); I suppose that Facebook post might have done the trick. This will be a three part review. Part one will deal with the M-Monochrom; part two, the new APO-Summicron-M 50/2 ASPH (which I’ll refer to from here on as the 50APO); and finally, part three will be a bit of a surprise. The latter I’ll also be testing on my M9-P, because there’s obviously no way of testing the APO specification on a monochrome only body.

A new page, perhaps a new chapter in black and white photography. In some months I will have to reconsider how to deal with all the M models. But for now, the Leica M Monochrom share so many features with the Leica M9 and Leica M9-P (metering, body design, menus, etc) that this will start out as part of this Leica M9 article

I’ve just received my advance copy of Basics Photography: Composition 2nd Edition (ISBN 978 2 940411 77 1). The first edition was published in 2006 and has run to six reprintings and is now available in eight other-language editions including Chinese, Korean, Hungarian and Turkish. The time had come to refresh some of the imagery and ideas and I’m very pleased to say that the new edition is everything I’d originally hoped for with this book – and probably more.

Leica X2 – sample and comparative shots As we got a permission to publish photos, we decided to compare quickly the camera, presented today, with two other models: the Leica X1 and their competitor, the Fujifilm X100. The shots of a mini-episode were saved as JPEG files with the anti-noise and sharpening filters set at minimum. The white balance was set using white reference (and, as you see, it didn’t perform nicely when it comes to the cameras of that German producer).

Having had the opportunity to test an M9 prototype before it’s launch in 2009, it was great to have a similar chance to test the new M Monochrom. The idea of these pages is to give you an idea of the benefits and the operation of the Monochrom, a discussion of the pros and cons, and to show some photographs taken with the camera. It’s not intended as a proper review - there are many others who will do that, besides, my job is to report problems to Leica rather than the world in general!

Novoflex has announced a range of mount adapters for the Fujifilm X-Pro1's X mount. The adapters allow the use of a wide range of non-XF lenses with the 16MP mirrorless camera. The range supports a broad cross-section of current and legacy lenses, including Canon FD, Nikon, Contax, Olympus OM and Minolta MD and AF mounts. There is also an adapter to allow use of Leica M-mount lenses, if you can't wait for the one Fujifilm said it is developing.
