Screencasting on a Mac | SmithVideo | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it

A screencast is a digital video recording that captures actions taking place on a computer screen.  Screencasts, which often contain voice-over narration, are useful for demonstrating how to use specific operating systems, software applications or website features. Screencast software captures and synchronizes the video and audio files and compresses the completed movie into a format that can be shared.  Screencast software applications for Mac include QuickTime10 Player, Ambrosia’s Snapz Pro X and Telestream’s Screenflow.

We will keep a (clearly very incomplete) list of tools and resources we use and/or discover relative to flipped teaching here. Help us grow this list using the form at the bottom of the page. We try to emphasize free tools on this page. There are many paid, inexpensive tools that we are big fans of including Screenflow (screencasting software) and Learning Catalytics (classroom response and assessment system)

Teachers Detail How Alternative Methods Have Helped Their Students

Beyond the reduction of standardized testing under House Bill 5, the House Committee on Public Education is also looking at using more of an innovative approach to teaching.

"Five percent of your knowledge is retained due to lecture; only 5 percent," Hooker said.. "And if you think about that, when you become a more active participatory member of learning -- like when you actually collaborate, and share, and create and teach -- you’re actually learning a lot more and remembering a lot more.”

Terrific ideas on length, pacing, flow and how to assess students’ progress. We answered the question of how to upload Doceri screencasts direct to Edmodo – as well as other apps on your iPad – with a screenshot example on the Open In function. Everyone got excited about using Zaption, EdTed and EduCanon to take their screencasts to the next level of student interactivity. - See more at: http://doceri.com/blog/2014/04/docerichat-archive-apr-2-2014-screencasting/#sthash.XrUt1SD6.dpuferrific

Personally, I use Camtasia Studio (PC only) to record, edit, and produce my videos. In the editor, I can add interactive elements like quizzes, hotspots/pauses, and callout boxes. Here is an article I wrote talking about how I use embedded quizzes (also includes a video tutorial + walkthrough of analytics). (Note: Camtasia Mac does not allow for the embedded quizzes. "Coaches, this is a great way to flip your film reviews or scouting reports and save more valuable practice time. Just make sure they watch it by requiring them to text you back what they learned or maybe include a hidden password you put into the video that they need to text back to you as well. When you ask questions about what they learned they all should know or they all may need some gassers for reminders!"

The big switch

The big switch | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it

Flipped classrooms generally take advantage of technology for off campus learning while maximising the presence of the teacher for discursive and iterative activities.

What happens when we flip the roles as well? What happens when the students become teachers and the teacher becomes a learner?

Peggy George's insight:

I totally agree that deeper learning can occur when students become the teachers with flipped learning!

Free Browser-based Screencasting with Screencast-O-Matic » Playing with Media | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it

Infrequently I’m required to use a Windows computer to create something, and today I needed to combine 2 PDFs for our school newsletter and post them to our website. Our district is using DotNetNuke as our CMS (content management system) and for some reason our site pages need to be edited in Internet Explorer for Windows. (Strange things have happened when I’ve edited with my favorite browser on all platforms, Google Chrome.) I recorded a 7 minute, 45 second screencast today demonstrating how I use the free Windows software program “PDFmate PDF Converter Free” to combine 2 PDF files into a single file, and then publish that file to our school website.

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Flipping The Flipped Classroom - Motion Infographics For STEM Learning

Innovation Design In Education - ASIDE: Flipping The Flipped Classroom - Motion Infographics For STEM Learning | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it
Innovative design crosses over all aspects of education. The American Society for Innovation Design in Education, or ASIDE, seeks to infuse curriculum with new approaches to teaching and thinking. Integrating the design of information into the daily conversation is an essential part of the teacher's toolkit and the purpose of the ASIDE blog. The underpinning of innovation and educational design is based on looking at the information available and communicating meaning for a world of learners. Thinking like a designer can transform the way children learn. ASIDE's goal is to bring together as much information, resources and supportive scholarship in one place for teaching and learning.

Office Mix screencasting tool enters public preview following Adobe Voice release | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it

Yesterday, Office Mix was a private preview. Today, it's public. For now, however, the two pieces of software work on different platforms. So far, Office Mix runs only on platforms that also run Office 2013 or Office 365—the PC, basically. (Office for iPad does not allow plug-ins, yet.) Adobe Voice is confined to the iPad. Neither tool does exactly the same thing, it's worth noting.

Blended Learning's Two Legged Stools (EdSurge News)

Blended Learning's Two Legged Stools (EdSurge News) | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it

Blended learning is putting students in the driver’s seat of their own education. By leveraging the power of technology, teachers are finding new ways to differentiate instruction and pacing, moving students from passive recipients to active participants in their education.

The promise of blended learning models is that they have the potential to integrate online instruction with face-to-face learning in ways that enable personalized learning for each student.

But fully delivering on this promise is a tall order. Two of the more popular blended learning models each have their own key shortcomings that prevent them from enabling the deeply student-centered learning that blended models have the potential to deliver.

The flipped classroom

The flipped classroom | Screencasting & Flipping for Online Learning | Scoop.it

The main goal of a flipped classroom is to enhance student learning and achievement by reversing the traditional model of a classroom, focusing class time on student understanding rather than on lecture. Many of us can recall instances in our lives where we found ourselves idly sitting in a classroom, eyes glazed over, half listening to our teacher as they lectured in front of the room. Pros/Cons described.
