Social Television's curator insight, January 21, 2014 6:09 AM

Sports is a key content for social tv and second screen:

- It's live and live events generate more engagement

- sports fans of different teams are very likely to generate conversation

- You have the time to give the attention to second screen

- Can create different experiences for television viewers and in stadium fans

TV vendors are quickly trotting out smart TV interfaces, but Disney says they can't compete with rich and easily updated tablet apps.
Mattia Nicoletti's insight:

"Will Television be just a dumb terminal?". probably yes according to Mark Arana, executive director for strategy and innovation at Walt Disney Studios.

I have always been doubtful about smart TV and the incredible growth of mobile (smartphone and tablets live with us the whole day) can confirm what Arana says. Human being are more confortable to use what they know better.

What’s Holding Us Back From True TV Everywhere? | screen seriality | Scoop.it

Mattia Nicoletti's insight:

Tv Everywhere can be the best experience possible and at the same time the worst one.

Programmers and operators as the article suggests should:

- Evangelize the viewers

- Improve the user experience

- invest enough money in the technical infrastructure to allow viewers to have a great experience (it's better not to invest money just to have tv everywhere as a option if user experience can be frustrating)

Tv Everywhere is an opportunity and a threat and operators should be aware of it.

Second Screen: Home vs Stadiums

Second Screen: Home vs Stadiums | screen seriality | Scoop.it
In an age where financial capital is stretched between so many different resources, how important is it for clubs to make sure stadiums are fully digitally enabled? and even if they were, do fans p...
Mattia Nicoletti's insight:

"The NFL has taken this view and has been experimenting with on-demand video replays and order-from-your-seat snack and beer service, controlled by apps on a smartphone or tablet. This enhances match-day experiences and makes the fan feel they are getting ‘more for their money’, particularly younger fans who may be used to extensive digital content. Fundamentally, younger fans are the future of the clubs, and if this core begins to feel that they can engage more from the comfort of their own homes, revenues will slide."

In sports second screen is the real star.  It can engage viewers at home and at the stadium in different ways. Again sports may be a real driver to make people get used to something that is going to stay.

In the same way it does not care that Game of Thrones is the most pirated tv show of the world HBO seems not condemn the password sharing of HBOGo accounts. This kind of strategy allows the cable tv to leverage the power if its brand and its image.

First of all HBO is a leader and is always ready to break the rules.

4K TV Not Quite Ready for Prime Time

4K TV Not Quite Ready for Prime Time | screen seriality | Scoop.it
As a tech journalist, it's my job to be skeptical about bleeding-edge technology, and I have plenty of hesitation when it comes to recommending ultra-high-definition TV.
Mattia Nicoletti's insight:

Some years ago I had a chat with the marketing manager of the Home Video business unit of a major. I was telling him that they sold us some films three times, the first time in VHS, the second one in DVD and the third one in Blue-Ray.

Tis is not very different from the strategy adopted by tv sets producers. Every4-5 years  they find new technologies to change the market. The matter is that these technology evolution does not work even because we have to understand that people don't change tv sets necessarily following what is new on the market.

In my opinion 3DTV is going to be forgotten (even if at CES some brands presented new models) and 4K it will take some time to be filled by contents. And the contents working well with 4K will be primarily sports and documentaries because films and tv series don't need iper-reality.
