If you're watching TV, it's probably not the only screen you're looking at. Most viewers nowadays are online on some device while they watch, a growing trend that advertisers and networks are trying to take advantage of.

What is interesting in the HBO documentary  the article is talking about is that the doc is focused on what I call micro contents, and on the second screen if you like you can get the macro contents, the background, the whole story.

This allows a different kind of storytelling for docs, because second screen contents are useful to give the whole missing details.

"HBO is planning a 15-minute live pre-show in advance of the season six premiere of “True Blood,” fueled by social media. The 15-minute program “#TrueBlood: Live from Set” will feature the cast answering questions from fans. It will also feature some of the show’s top fans through a partnership with Twitter and Mass Relevance. In a statement, HBO credits the show’s social fanbase as a key component to its success:

 

“Social media has been core to the marketing strategy for True Blood since the first season, leading to one of the most engaged fan bases of any television series,” said Pamela Levine , executive vice president, HBO Marketing in a statement. “#TrueBlood: Live From the Set will reward our devotees by allowing them to both participate in and affect the live broadcast through a unique intersection of linear television and digital media.”..."

In the same way it does not care that Game of Thrones is the most pirated tv show of the world HBO seems not condemn the password sharing of HBOGo accounts. This kind of strategy allows the cable tv to leverage the power if its brand and its image. 

First of all HBO is a leader and is always ready to break the rules.
