Edward Snowden's Email Service Abruptly Shuts Down

Edward Snowden's Email Service Abruptly Shuts Down | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Lavabit, the privacy-conscious email service famously thought to have been used by Edward Snowden, abruptly shut down on Thursday as the company prepares to go to court against the U.S. government.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 9.2

Lavabit, the email service used by leaker Edward Snowden, suddenly shut down on Thursday as the company prepares to face off in court against the U.S. government. Lavabit allowed people to send highly encrypted emails that would be nearly impossible to read, even if intercepted, without a password. Snowden used Lavabit to protect the messages he has sent since he escaped to Russia.

I feel so sorry for this company espeically it;s creator Ladar Levison. He simply provided a service and now he's being punished for it. What's even worse is that the Government has basically told himthat they are to shut up about everything unless he wants go to jail. Um. What happened to the First Amendment? Ever since 9/11 our consitutional rights in this country have been reduced tremendously. I know reason was for our safety but there have been times (like this one) where the government has gone too far. Honestly, we look like foolish trying find this guy and bringing him in. He felt what he did was right for his country and you can't knock him for that. Just pardon the guy.

USPS eyes alcohol delivery - Associated Press

USPS eyes alcohol delivery - Associated Press | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — Special delivery from the post office — beer, wine and spirits, if Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe has his way.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 8.2

Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said Thursday the delivery of alcoholic beverages is on his wish list as the USPS considers ways to raise revenue and save money after losing $16 billion last year. Donahoe said delivering alcohol has the potential to raise as much as $50 million a year. The Senate passed a postal reform bill last year that included a provision allowing the agency to deliver alcohol. The bill says that the shipments of alcohol would comply with state laws of where the package is sent and you would have to 21 years old with valid identification to recieve it.

This is amsuing ironic. Remember the days of Prohibition when everyone had to sneak around to get a drink? Well now the government wants to help satisfy our drinking habits by providing us with the shipment of alcohol! I think this is a great idea for the Postal Service and it will definitely raise revenue but I can't help but think about all the bad implications about this. To me I think this makes it even easier for those under-age to allocate alcohol (Not that it wasn't easy enough anyway). But one (particulary a teen) could simply order some alcohol and have a of age friend or adult accept the package once it is delivered, or even accept it themselves if they have a fake ID. I don't think mailmen will have the capabilities to recognize Fakes when they see them. Espcially if they have route, it's much easier to take the ID and look it over and say "Okay" than to scrutinize the thing. But anyways, Postal Service for the win! #Merica

Anthony Weiner may have just destroyed his mayoral campaign

Anthony Weiner may have just destroyed his mayoral campaign | Scrapbook | Scoop.it

New sexts have emerged — sent under the instantly infamous username Carlos Danger

Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 7.2

First of all, I would like to commend Mr. Weiner (*giggles*) on his perseverance and dedication. This man tweeted out photos of his crotch and had to resign from Congress. Instead of staying out of the public eye for the rest of his life, he decides to run for mayor ..... of New York City. Let me reiterate this. Mr. Weiner (*snicker*) could've disappeared forever, gone to the Midwest start a farm or something, but he decides to run for mayor of one of the most media ridden city in the world. Nothing can get this man down. And not only is he running for mayor but he's been leading the polls. I know it's probably through name recognition but still. So it seems everything is looking up for Mr. Weiner right? Well no, now more scandolous stuff about Mr. Weiner has been exposed. "New sexts have emerged — sent under the instantly infamous username Carlos Danger."

(To whom may be reading this, I have been laughing hysterically this whole time) What? Carlos Danger? To make matters worse, the new sexts could have occurred after the first scandal. So after this man said he was changed man and his wife stayed with him, he decides he should give it another try. What a shame. But you know what? I think this could possibly be good for Mr. Danger's bid for NYC mayor. I mean it is New York City. The publicity could be the one thing that puts him over the edge. It's all about name recognition and he's got it. As of right now I could not possibly tell you the name of the other candidates and all the other articles I've read about the situation hasn't mentioned them. For all we know he could be behind all these leaks. Sure, Mr. Weiner is a sleaze who probably hasn't changed but we all could be looking at the new NYC mayor.

Finally legal: Queen gives gay marriage the Royal Assent

Finally legal: Queen gives gay marriage the Royal Assent | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Britain has legalized gay marriage after Queen Elizabeth II gave her royal stamp of approval.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 6.2

Historical moment for gays in Britian, as Queen Elizabeth II gave her royal stamp of approval for gay marriage. The bill (the Marriage Bill) enables gay couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales. This is huge for the international gay community im sure. I think we can expect to see an influx of immigrants who are gay and looking for marriage. "However, religious organisations will have to 'opt in' on performing gay marriages." We can assume the Catholic Church will not be opting in but I do not know where the Anglican Church stands on matters of homosexuality. But I'm assuming since the Queen supports the bill, then it has no problem with the Anglican Church.

Ireland set to allow abortion for first time under 'historic' new law

Ireland set to allow abortion for first time under 'historic' new law | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Irish lawmakers voted to allow abortion in limited circumstances for the first time in the deeply Catholic country’s history Friday, following a bitter debate that saw letters written in blood sent to the country’s Prime Minister Enda Kenny.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 5.2

This was very suprsing to me. Ireland, VERY VERY VERY CATHOLIC Ireland, allowing abortion? Even if it is restricted (Under a new bill, doctors will be allowed to end the life of an unborn child if there is a threat to the life of the pregnant woman.) I thought this would never be possible. Supposedly what prompted this was the death was the death of Savita Halappanavar. She was a 31-year old woman who was refused a quick termination of her pregnancy even though she was miscarrying and suffering from blood poisoning. Even though this different from the typical behavior of Ireland, I understand why it was passed. While passing a law that deals with abortion, I don't think Ireland fully supports abortion. This law is simply to protect the lives of pregnant women in emergencies and it does not allow for the termination of a unborn child just because the mother wants to. Another good thing about this law is that it also allows for an abortion if three medical practitioners agree this is necessary to prevent a pregnant woman from taking her own life. While there are good intentions here, there will be alot of protest from the bunch of fevorant Catholic Irish

Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 4.2

Another example of the sketchiness of the US Government. Director of Naitonal Intenlligence James Clapper was asked whether the National Security Agency collects “any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans. In his March testimony, Clapper answered “no,” later adding, “not wittingly.” It was later revealed that the NSA does collect “metadata” from telephone and Internet companies on millions of Americans – information that reveals information like the time, date and phone numbers of telephone calls, not the content of those calls. Then Clapper tries to save face by offering explanations that conflicted with each other. Supposedly Clapper didn't completely understand the question, even though he was given a list of questions ahead of time. This is so suspect. If the NSA scandal hadnt been revealed this man would've sticked with denying any spying on the NSA part. This goes to show AGAIN that the US Government does what it wants when it wants and it will lie and cover it up when necessary. So much for a free country eh?

Italy's Berlusconi found guilty of paying a minor for sex

Italy's Berlusconi found guilty of paying a minor for sex | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
ROME — Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was found guilty Monday of paying a minor for sex and of abuse of power in office. He was sentenced to seven years in jail and banned from public office for life.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 3.2

Judges have ruled that Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi a Moroccan-born dancer for sex when she was 17. He is also found guilty of abusing his power as prime minsiter. He has abused his power in a number of ways. He did it when he tried to free aforementioned dancer from jail after she was arrested. There's a bunch of nitty gritty details here I don't think I can explain on here or care to. But what we can take from all this is that the former Prime Minsiter is a corrupt, sleazy little [insert noun of choice]. This dude is 76 years old and he's messing with a 17 year old? Come on man, Dont you have a wife? Oh Wait. She left him becasue of his association with ANOTHER young women. I'm not trying to hate on relationships with large age differences but this man had a wife and is a politician. Don't you care about your self-image? Not only is this guy messing with young women but he being investigated for bribing a senator to join his political party and he's being charged with tax evasion. You wanna know the funny part about all this? Due to the way Italy's legal system is set up, this dude might not be going to jail for years. Not only that but I think he might get to keep his spot in Parliment. I guess you can do the crime and not pay the crime eh?

FBI Uses Drones in Domestic Surveillance, Mueller Says

FBI Uses Drones in Domestic Surveillance, Mueller Says | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
The FBI uses drones in domestic surveillance operations in a “very, very minimal way,” Director Robert Mueller said.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 2.2

In the wake the US Government surveillance scandal, FBI Director Robert Mueller has revealed that the FBI "uses drones in domestic surveillance operations in a “very, very minimal way,” He has said it is very seldom used and generally used in particular incidents when the FBI needs the drone's capability.  “It is very narrowly focused on particularized cases and particularized needs.” Like come on dude? Let's be straight here. The US Government does what it wants when it wants. "Torture is inhumane, blah, blah, blah" This is really a front the US puts on since it is the big brother of the whole world. It has too if we need keep any respect we have as The Grand Protector of the World. But how does the US really protect the world? Through torture, drones, and I'm pretty sure tons of illegal and inhumane actitivity. But Mr. Director are serius right now? You only use drones in a "very, very minimal way"? People wonder how the Government knows so much. How? Well there snooping on you while your on internet and they're being Peeking Toms through your window.

Hillary Clinton’s arrival on Twitter leaves followers wondering what’s next | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Within a day of her social media debut, the “pantsuit aficionado” had surpassed 350,000 followers.

This article basically (and unnecessarily) goes into detail about Hilary Clinton's joining of twitter. It goes into the fact that everyone is watching her next move and anticipating whether or not she'll run 2016. "With her emergence on Twitter, Clinton tried to stake out turf above all that. She is defining herself not as a staid politician but as a witty, self-effacing and almost hip netizen." Lol with this move I can only see more publicity for Hilary which means more votes. If I were her, I'd use this to my advantage. Try and gather votes from the younger generations through your tweets. Sure you'll seem desperate, but who cares if your president. Sanjay Gupta apologizes, backs medical marijuana

Sanjay Gupta apologizes, backs medical marijuana | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Gupta challenged DEA classification of marijuana as dangerous drug, pointing to new research and cases of legitimate patients who have been helped
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 9.1

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, one of America's most prominent doctors, has shifted his stance in support of medical marijuana. In a post on CNN called "Why I changed my mind on weed" (Link here -> http://edition.cnn.com/2013/08/08/health/gupta-changed-mind-marijuana/) he says he was too dismissive of the "loud chorus" of patients whose symptoms improved with help from medical marijuana. He added that marijuana does not have a high potential for addiction compared to cocaine or cigarettes. Gupta also talks about how it's becoming harder to pour more research into medical marijuana for treating pain. One of the reason is the fact that there is a stricter approval process for doing research that has to go through several health agencies. "He pointed out tolerance is a real problem in existing medications: People are likely to overdose from a prescription drug every 19 minutes, but he couldn't come across one case of a marijuana overdose."

Wow, this a lot to take in. Sanjay Gupta, arguably the most famous doctor in America right now (Alongside Dr. Oz), has essentially backed the use of marijuana. Now there have been several doctors that have done the same, but not at this level. Gupta is a polarizing figure. I mean he almost became Surgeon General. For this man to come out and say "Hey, Weed isn't that bad, it's actually beneficial" is huge. Gupta has brought up some negative effects but has mentioned tons of legal drugs have even worse adverse effects. In Gupta's original article he said, "I calculated about 6% of the current U.S. marijuana studies investigate the benefits of medical marijuana. The rest are designed to investigate harm. That imbalance paints a highly distorted picture." Even if you are for or against marijuana you can obviously see there is something wrong with this picture. Gupta has said that before he mistakenly believed the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof but he soon found out that they didnt have the science to support that claim. Like isn't that crazy? The government has declared something illegal yet on no basis whatsoever? What is even crazier is that there is no scientific basis yet the government vehemently defends the law and rejects any counter opinion toward it. I could go on and on about this, but the point is one of America's prominent doctors gave his backing to marijuana. I believe this will have a domino effect and potentially lead to more legalization across the states.

CORRECTED-Texas is running out of execution drug pentobarbital

(Corrects paragraph 1 to reflect Texas now uses single drug inexecutions)By Jim ForsythSAN ANTONIO, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Texas, the state with thehighest execution rate in the country, is running out
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 8.1

Texas, which has the highest execution rate in the Untied States, will run out of the drug it uses in lethal injections by September. The drug, pentobarbital, has been used in the execution of 11 inmates so far in 2013, which is more inmates than have been killed in the rest of the country combined. Please note this is the same drug they use to euthanize pets and other animals. Officials said five more Texas executions are scheduled for this year.

Let's reflect on this. First off, The state of Texas has more executions this year than rest of the U.S. COMBINED. This is already a horrendus fact but not only are they executing the most people, they are using the same drugs that they use to euthanize animals to kill them. Isn't this a bit inhumane? These guys down there in Texas are now running out of the drug (GEE I WONDER WHY?) and are looking for "alternatives." Why not just scrap the whole death penalty thing? I'm pretty sure it'll save you money and it won't look bad. "Texas has executed 503 prisoners - more than any other state - since a 1976 U.S. Supreme Court ruling affirming capital punishment." Like come on, your telling me this isn't a problem? It would be more humane to stick these guys in jail for life and let them die in there cold and alone than execute them. If anything it is an easy "out" for them.

Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 7.1

"The House of Representatives voted 217-205 to defeat an amendment to the defense appropriations bill that would have limited the National Security Agency's ability to collect electronic information, including phone call records." Huh? Your telling me that there is majority of people in the government that supports Goverment spying? This is quite scary for the rest of us America. As I said before the government does what it wants when it wants. I believe even if this bill were to pass, the government would never stop spying. I also believe this wasn't the only thing the government has been hiding in terms of spying on Americans. As I type this right now, I am sure the government is watching me and whoever is reading this. The stuff in the movies? IT'S REAL. Where else do they get their ideas? And The so-called ‘Patriot Act’ has ensured that we’re no longer a functioning Democracy. And the fact that the word “constitutional” doesn’t even appear in the reporting of the discussion by those sworn to uphold its protections should be proof enough.  One interesting comment I read at the bottom of this article, "The NSA already has enough dirt on every politician and judge that no one would dare challenge their programs or their funding." Now if you really think about this makes absolute sense. Everyone has a secret to hide, especially politcians, now if you knew the government was spying on you and you've done stuff that wouldn't look so good if exposed I'd be doing whatever it takes to make Big Brother happy. If I am not able to make another Scoop. It you will know that the government has come and got me. Please don't forget me.

Here we go again. Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlisconi's aides were found guilty of procuring prostitutes for him. What were these prostitutes for? His "bunga bunga" parties that he has at his mansion. Like we thought it was bad before but now this guy had his people going out and finding prostitutes? Wow. The three aids have denied the charges and Berlusconi has said that the gatherings at his home were nothing more than elegant affairs featuring wholesome after-dinner entertainment. Really Dude? Is "Wholesome after-dinner entertainment" having your inhome strip club/brothel? Plus, who calls his dinner parties "bunga bunga" parties. Creep. Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 5.1

The Boston Bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was scheduled to be arraigned on 30 federal charges, 17 of which could bring the death penalty. He plead not guilty to all the charges. Victims of the bombing and their families were also present during the arraignment. Suprsingingly, there were a significant amount of supportes of Tsarnaev there too, demanding his freedom. I don't know what Tsarnaev's and his lawyer's plan is but I don't understand pleading not guilty especially when they caught you red handed. The dude was looking up Extremist stuff on his computer right before and even wrote a disturbing confession while he was in the boat before getting caught. Look in my opinion I think he should be punished (not the death penalty) but I don't think he did all this willingly. According to all the personal accounts, Tsarnaev was just normal kid who did normal stuff, nothing suspect. I really do believe he was heavly influenced by his brother and was coerced into doing it. Yes, he should go to jail for the horrible things he's done but I think we should cut him some slack.

China to adults: Go see your mother or go to jail

China to adults: Go see your mother or go to jail | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Grown children in China must visit their parents or face fines or even jail, according to a new law that went into effect today.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 4.1

The title of this article essentially sums everything up for you. People who don't visit their elderly parents often "enough" could be fined or jailed, according to a new law that went into effect in the awesome country of China. Look, the law has good intentions. I mean we all should look after our parents when they grow old and what not. We're basically all they have. And I don't think they have enough retirement homes over there. This espcially makes sense in China with huge and aging population and the "one-child policy". It's gonna be hard caring for the old people. But I don't know how they're going to enforce this. Not everyone has easy access to visits with their parents and with the new generation (The "Me" Generation) I think we'll see alot of resistance. And I think the fact that you can go to Jail just cause you haven't visited your parents in a while is lucridous. Come on China, you can do better than this. Try Democracy?

Paula Deen loses WalMart deal, but popularity surges among fans amid N-word controversy | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
Two major corporate partners abandoned Paula Deen Wednesday — but her fans seems to be sticking with the beleaguered TV chef like cholesterol to clogged arteries.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 3.1

This article basically adds more insult to injury to Paula Deen saga. Now Walmart has dropped her and so has Caesars Entertainment. This is after the Food Network dropped her. But here's the interesting thing, the demand to buy tickets for an annual "Paula Deen Cruise" has risen and even prompted the addition of an extra voyage next year. Even her cookbook "Deen’s New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up,” shot to #18 on Wednesday on the online bookseller Amazon. In an interview, Deen simply said not to underestimate the power of fans and supporters. Honestly, I don't know how to feel about this. As an African-American, yes I am taken aback but the conspiraty theorist in can't help but feel this could be a publicity stunt on a very minimal level. Like I knew who Paula Deen was but it wasn't till this scandal that I was familar with her. Her cookbook sales are going up and I bet if she was still on TV her ratings would skyrocket. In a moral sense, I think it is good that all these companies are dropping her, but in a economical sense its a stupid move on their part. Her products couldnt stay on the shevles if they kept her even if the American public considers her a racist now.

Kraft: Putin stole Bowl ring

Kraft: Putin stole Bowl ring | Scrapbook | Scoop.it
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft revealed the real story behind a 2005 meeting with Vladimir Putin, during which the Russian president pocketed his Super Bowl ring, worth more than $25,000.
Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 2.1

So what happened here is that Robert Kraft, Owner of the New England Patriots, basically exposed Russian president, Vladmir Putin. Supposedly, while the two were meeting, Kraft showed Putin his Super Ring and Putin pocketed it and left. “I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone with this ring,’ ” Now this already is very suspect of the Russian president, like what dude? Here's what Kraft also had to say, “I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.” If Kraft is telling the truth here, this even more of a reason to distrust Russia. But you know the best part of this article? Originally after the event happened, Kraft released a statement saying he gave the ring as a gift "as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and [his] leadership." Lol, such ludacris. But Kraft said he really wanted the ring back but he got a call from the George W. Bush-run White House saying, “‘It would really be in the best interest of US-Soviet relations if you meant to give the ring as a present.” If it were me I'd say scew US-Soviet relations, if I had a Super Bowl Ring that I worked for and to see it stolen by some Russian guy, I'd be very displeased. I'd tell the White House to deal with it.

Ashnel Jean-Mary's insight:

Week 1.1

Sales of Geroge Orwell's classic novel "1984" has risen more 3,000 percent on Amazon. The novel is "about the oppressiveness of government overreach and life in a world where there is no place to escape the watchful eye of Big Brother." What has caused this tremondous increase? We're pretty sure its due to the revelation of the U.S. government surveillance programs. As of right now it is number 5 on the "movers and shakers list." The book looks to serve as a warning for what can happen when government overextends its powers, which makes sense as to why people are buying it at this magnitude. It is quite ironic acutally. Government reveals that they are spying on you over the internet and you go out and buy a book about it? Lol I think it would freak me out even more. In fact, am I being watched right now? O__O
