The firm was still operated by its successors, G. Fortin, as late as 1939 at the 81 rue Lafayette address. Founder: Jacob Alexandre (1804 1876), son Édouard died 1888. Listed as a Société in 1864. Olivier Schmitt's Pédalion

Olivier Schmitt's Pédalion | Scoopeedoo | Scoop.it

From Olivier Schmitt's notes: The Reed Organ - literally and organ with reeds, is very different from the French harmonium which were raised to nobility by distinguished harmonium builders such as Alexandre, Mustel, Debain and Dumont-Lelièvre....

The Reed Organ is not an instrument where the reeds are actuated by by wind pressure, but a suction wind instrument generating a vacuum that sucks in air to actuate the reeds, producing a sound that is softer, more mellow sound than that of a harmonium. What also sets the reed organ apart from the harmonium is the fact that the Reed Organ does not offer the expression facilities offered by a harmonium. Instead the reed organ builders have developed a system of reed chests very similar to those of a pipe organ......

Stephen Mann's Alexandre Harmonium

Stephen Mann's Alexandre Harmonium | Scoopeedoo | Scoop.it

Stephen Mann on his Alexandre Harmonium: I am grateful to Pam Fluke for supplying the following imformation on my harmonium: "Your harmonium was made by the firm of Alexandre Pere et Fils in Paris. It was bought by Chappell & Company New Bond Street London and they will have sold it from their emporium to a customer.

It was built in August 1868 - this is from pencilled writing inside the instrument - 31 Aout 1868. The instrument was discovered in the Church of Our Lady of Fatima in London. It is unusual in havimg a set of tuned bars set into the rear to be struck by small piano-like hammers when the Percussion de Recit stops are drawn. It also has the standard harmonium Percussion device.

In my research, I came across the 'Tutor for the Harmonium' by Louis Engel - a most respected performer on Harmonium - a real advocate for the instrument! He frequently gave recitals on instruments in Chappell`s.

In this Tutor, Engel writes about a special Alexandre he had made for himself - having a set of tuned bars. I can only `guess` that this instrument may be his - although his instrument was made for him in 1868 - perhaps slightly more than a 'guess. ??"
