Six Scaffolding Strategies to Use with Your Students

Six Scaffolding Strategies to Use with Your Students | Scoop.it! Ed topics | Scoop.it

"Scaffolding and differentiation do have something in common though. In order to meet students where they are and appropriately scaffold a lesson, or differentiate instruction, you have to know the individual and collective zone of proximal development (ZPD) of your learners."

Connie Wise's insight:

"Simply put, scaffolding is what you do first with kids, then for those students who are still struggling, you may need to differentiate by modifying an assignment and/or making accommodations for a student (for example, choose more accessible text and/or assign an alternative project)."

The Power of Movement in Teaching and Learning

The Power of Movement in Teaching and Learning | Scoop.it! Ed topics | Scoop.it
A specialist in kinesthetic teaching says that the use of creative movement in the classroom can help students make deeper emotional and interpersonal connections to academic subjects.
Connie Wise's insight:

"

In a traditional classroom, when a teacher asks a question, "Who can tell me … ?" usually four or five hands go up. The teacher will call on one student, and perhaps on another few to see if their answers agree with the first, but the teacher will have no way of knowing what is going on in the heads of the other 20 students.

The kinesthetic teacher has a different approach. "Show me … " Twenty-five students are being asked to respond physically to the question: Show me what comes first, the comma or the closed quotation mark. Show me if this is a series or parallel circuit. Show me an animal that lives in the rainforest; show me how the character feels just before the story's climax. Immediately, all of the students respond, and their learning is made visible. They have to think about what they are going to do, and literally take a stand. If they want to change their answer, they don't have to erase anything, they just change their pose."

How Should Social Media Be Taught in Schools?

How Should Social Media Be Taught in Schools? | Scoop.it! Ed topics | Scoop.it
The power of connected learning expands the classroom to infinity and beyond, but students still need a teacher’s guidance.
Connie Wise's insight:

Before we ask how, I think we should address why social media should be taught in schools.

Students may appear to be comfortable using social media, but don’t assume that they know how to use it appropriately in a classroom setting.

(Thinking about that statement in regard to using Edmodo)

Why Email Should Die | EdReach | Scoop.it! Ed topics | Scoop.it
This year for Lent, I decided to give up email. Now, I know what a lot of you might be thinking. "We would all LOVE to give up email, we'd have so much free time."
Connie Wise's insight:

An experiment to give up email resulted in challenges and surprises.

"By not sitting behind my computer screen “working on email” I have actually been somewhat liberated.  I’ve been able to go out and visit campuses, talk to people and have discussions that would have never have happened if I was behind the wall of email. The amount of face to face interactions have increased nearly five fold."

Common Core Speaking Standard is Not Enough

Connie Wise's insight:

"The reality is that the  CCSS creators do not understand oral communication, either. They correctly realized that we must create  competent oral communicators if we want students to be college and career (and  socially) ready. But we need to realize  that using the CCSS as a guide will not get students there. We need to develop consistent language from  grade to grade."

Connie Wise's insight:

"In 2013, technology has become not just a tool, but a standard and matter of credibility. While learning by no means requires technology, to design learning without technology is an exercise in spite—proving a point at the cost of potential. And it’s difficult to forget how new this is."

Since I started in education, I have been trying to find ways to connect students' learning beyond the classroom walls. Initially, the task presented many hurdles. Infrastructure was limited, devices
Connie Wise's insight:

"Hangouts, the social media feature of the Google+ platform, are online spaces offering teachers and students a great forum to connect with one or many participants and engage in a real-time dialogue. If you are a school that uses Google apps for education, then all of your teachers have the ability to set up their own Google+ page and use the Hangout feature. I have seen examples of department meetings taking place via Google Hangouts and noticed a growing number of online presentations happening via this forum."
