I really enjoyed this article due to the simplicity of the inforgraphic showcasing the information in a colourful and engaging way. As there are several types of social media such as facebook, twitter and tumblr (blogs) having media stratergy for each one is important. All of them have different communiction features and different target audiences. Kamal has chosen well and agreeing with emma that this really links well with the week 7 lecture topic.
Christine IMC's curator insight, September 26, 2013 10:15 PM

This is a good article as it uses infographics which makes it easier to understand and take in the idea of developing and implementing a media strategy and in this case for social media. The first 4 steps are the basics to developing a strategy and then it expands on it with not great detail but just the quick basic information one needs to know. Although one thing it doesn't mention though is analyzing a market or finding a target market which I beleive helps within the process of developing a strategy, knowing what potential customers to target or what market or segment.

Half of U.S. Shoppers Rely on Phones for In-Store Research

Half of U.S. Shoppers Rely on Phones for In-Store Research | Scoop 2 | Scoop.it

The Pew Internet and American Life Project shed light on one of the biggest challenges for retailers: more than half of U.S. adult cell phone owners used their mobile phone during the recent holiday season to access product reviews, compare prices and calla friend or family member for purchasing advice.

Selina EverHungry Nihalani's insight:

The main focus of this article is the positive use of the IMC concept pertaining to the increase in Retail Sales. As the usage of mobile technology increases so do retail sales as consumers now indulge in online sales. It is, obviously, easier for consumers to go onto a website or an app as opposed to walking into one store after another. Since it has become a common trend, it has been adapted into marketing techniques. Statistics show an increase in the users of mobile phones. This could have a negative impact on businesses if they do not tread carefully. It could cause them to shut down their physical retail stores as they are not attracting the same number of walk-in customers. On the contrary, this could also be beneficial taking into consideration the rental costs, staff salaries and other overheads.

@Leish Again I think the company is right in moving forward to better use technology for its marketing. It is really relevant and mobile devices are a part of every-day life for most people. Shopping online is incredibly easy; it cuts out travel, lines and even crowded stores. Retail stores and jobs within retail will see a strain from this as there is less need for physical stores and sales people. One on one selling however will always be around in one way or another, it gives the consumer the security they need on their purchase and I don’t think consumers will be inclined to trust the internet for big purchase items just yet. IMC is a large factor when selling in retail and the online trend will just keep increasing.
German Grebenyuk's comment, September 25, 2013 10:03 PM
Definitely an interesting article. Social media is not only useful for marketers, but also for consumers. Knowledgeable buyers have more power and leverage, which creates a number of problems. Firstly, consumers now can easily check prices in other shops or find a review online. Both of these things can make a consumer change their mind quickly. All retailers and producers can do in this situation is to try and manage these issues (for example by making sure that prices are matched with competitors' or facilitating creation and spread of positive feedback from consumers). This problem is especially relevant for medium priced goods. The other issue, substitute of online shopping is a threat to mainly retailers. I agree with Leish when she says that retailer have certain advantages over online shopping and they need utilize them well to stay relevant.
Melika Trott's comment, September 26, 2013 1:26 AM
This is a new technology age that is growing fast and has real aspects and devices now, that aren't unlike the things we have seen in science fiction movies made not so long ago. Now buyers can get unbiased information about products in a store while they are right there in the store. This is truly the age of the smart buyer and consumers no longer have to feel powerless in a buying situation. We no longer have to accept everything the store people tell us and no longer need to accept the prices either. A buyer can easily check with a few clicks if they can buy the same product somewhere else for a cheaper price. I for one think this is brilliant and is keeping sellers on right on their toes.

If happy customers buy more and bring friends, then it behooves marketers to care about the customer experience.
Selina EverHungry Nihalani's insight:

I feel this article highlighted some really good points about integrated digital marketing through the various social networks, interactive web-based and mobile technologies. In my opinion, I agree that these kind of ways of marketing has shifted power from the producer to the consumer and has definitely helped improve the result of greater marketing. This article listed out a number of trends of marketing in this year. The one that I appreciated the most is the"The Maturation of Mobile". Smartphone and tablets have become so popular in the last couple of years. Most of the people own a smartphone nowadays from little kids to the elderly. Big companies like facebook and Coca-Cola, and even Singapore Airlines have their own app on the Apple App Store and the Android App Market. It's no doubt that this trend makes the relationship between the customers and the marketer more closer. In addition, the next one will be social network. Companies have set up a page on facebook to hear from the customers and spread out the news of the company. I believe that these two are the trends that will get more and more prevalent in the future.
