The Uda Walawe Elephant Research Project is the first-ever long-term study of Asian elephants in the wild. Asian elephants are classified as ‘endangered’ under the IUCN Red List, with their number one threat being loss of habitat.

"I've been studying Asian elephants in Sri Lanka for the past six years. We've kept track of close to 600 of these amazing animals in Uda Walawe National Park over this time, following their friendships and learing about how they communicate with one another. Starting this year, I'm expanding our work to look at how farmers and elephants affect one another. Each year wildlife and people are killed because of conflict over land and water. We hope our work will help solve some of the problems."

"Human-elephant conflict has become a major issue in agricultural areas surrounding Uda Walawe National Park, Sri Lanka. Farmers cultivating crops such as coconut, banana, and rice, which are very attractive to elephants, have settled immediately alongside of the Uda Walawe Park border. As a result, elephants frequently raid their crops resulting in economic losses for the farmers and sometimes the loss of human or elephant life. The Uda Walawe Elephant Research Project is researching methods to reduce human-elephant conflict in this region. The goal is to allow farmers to sustain their livelihoods while simultaneously protecting habitat for wild elephant populations."
