October's Berry Go Round and crowd funding of science

October's Berry Go Round and crowd funding of science | #SciFund | Scoop.it

"I would encourage you to check out Andi Wolfe's #SciFund project and support it if you can. Andi is a professor in the department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at The Ohio State University that I just began attending this autumn, and the funding from her #SciFund project will support undergraduate research.

I think overall that the #SciFund challenge will benefit scientists and the public. Scientists must strive to explain often difficult topics to a "why should I care?" public, flexing their PR muscles, and the public gets the opportunity to feel like they're a part of the scientific process. It's exciting and I can't wait to see what comes from it.

Good luck, Andi!"

Crowdfunding For Science — Can It Succeed? - Slashdot

Crowdfunding For Science — Can It Succeed? - Slashdot | #SciFund | Scoop.it

"Can crowdfunding work for science? Having raised nearly $40,000 for scientific research in 10 days for projects as diverse as biofuel catalyst design to the study of cellular cilia to deploying seismic sensor networks (that attach to your computer!) to robotic squirrels, the #SciFund Challenge is taking off like a rocket. Might this be a future model for science funding in the U.S. and abroad? What would that mean?"

Zombie Fish! (No, really)

Zombie Fish! (No, really) | #SciFund | Scoop.it

"You know what's awesome? Parasites.

You know what's even more awesome? Parasites that infect the brain of their host, and make their hosts do crazy things that benefit the parasite. Yeah, kinda like zombies.

The coolest thing about these parasites is that they've had millions of years to figure out how killifish brains work, and to figure out how to change the fish's brain chemistry in order to get the fish to behave in a certain way."

Backwards Dolphin's Fin at Okie Whaler

Backwards Dolphin's Fin at Okie Whaler | #SciFund | Scoop.it

Why is the Dolphin's fin on backwards? Does the backward fin help males move faster than expected (possibly in order to defend more females or bully or out-maneuver other males), or does it slow them down significantly or make them less agile than expected (leading me to suspect that the fins are a handicap, and females have the final say in mating).

This line of research involves making physical models of the fins and doing experiments in a flow tank - sort of like a wind tunnel, but with water. In order to make the models, we have to get very accurate images of the fins with a medical CT scanner. Unfortunately, time on a medical CT scanners is expensive! This is where you come in! Your contribution will help me purchase the time I need to complete the scanning. From there - its a piece of cake!

Strike, Rattle, & Roll - Squirrel vs. Snake Face-Off!

Strike, Rattle, & Roll - Squirrel vs. Snake Face-Off! | #SciFund | Scoop.it

"Are you afraid of snakes? How about venomous snakes? Most people turn the other way when they encounter a venomous snake. However, ground squirrels, unlike people, show no fear in the face of predatory rattlesnakes. Squirrels often approach snakes to within striking distance, kick dirt in their faces, and waive their tails back and forth (a behavior known as tail-flagging). This research project aims at finding out why squirrels approach snakes and tail-flag, behaviors that seem logically maladaptive."
