Iron Sky: A Good Movie Given a Bad Rap

Iron Sky: A Good Movie Given a Bad Rap | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it

The phrase a "movie so bad, its good" get thrown around a lot among film critics and movie fans. I came across this video commentary from Leon Thomas at That Guy With The Glasses that discusses the 2012 film Iron Sky, and how it is not a bad movie. The basis of Thomas' video that it is not a so-bad-it's-good movie.

According to the commentary video,

- Its really good, genuinely funny and clever
- The title "So bad, it's good" is not accurate
- Its an intentional comedy
- The acting is passable to good

- It is a political satire that knows where it came from
- It attempted to "be something"
- The filmmakers had sheer guts and ambition to make the film
- The movie takes no prisoners and it took risks

For those of you who have listened to the Sci-Fi Super Friends Podcast over the last few months, you probably know that we have reviewed a wide variety of films, including Iron Sky. In March 2013, we released our review of this Finnish/Austrailan/German made sci-fi comedy (Episod #7 Iron Sky). I could not help but find similarities in some of the points that Thomas made with points in my own individual review.

Subsequent to our review of the film The Sci-Fi Super Friends got the opportunity to interview Christopher Kirby, one of the main leads who played James Washington, for one of our bonus episodes. Mr. Kirby admittedly told us that in his opinion, "it was a mood piece that was probably not for everybody".

As I said in my review and the Kirby Interview, I feel that Iron Sky is a competently done film with more good aspects than bad. Although for me, some of the comedic writing and direction was not executed as well as it could have been, I still really enjoyed ths film. I also agree with Thomas that it is "A Not Bad Movie" and that this film has, or will have a cult following over the years.

Jim Starlin sets the Thanos Record Straight

Jim Starlin sets the Thanos Record Straight | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it
Jim Starlin, creator of the villainous Titan Marvel character Thanos, has gone on the Facebook record to clear up previous statements of his about whether or not Thanos will be [...]
George Jackson's insight:

This is my commentary on Tye Bourdony's post from www.scifipulse.net

I have respect for Jim Starlin and his wonderful creation of the villainous Thanos in Marvel Comics. But, I ask why does anyone really care about whether he knows if the character will appear in any upcoming super hero movie? As far as his compliant about not being compensated for creating Thanos any probably other characters, he created those years ago while working for Marvel. He was paid for his work at the time. After that it is Marvel's property to do what they wish. At the most he should/could demand is maybe more recognition. But not additional compensation from any future movie.

With or Without Christopher Nolan And Christian Bale, A Justice League Film Will be Tough to Pull Off.

With or Without Christopher Nolan And Christian Bale, A Justice League Film Will be Tough to Pull Off. | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it
Although I'm optimistic that it can be done, I'll just say that ALL the stars will need to be in alignment to produce a quality film that will make money.

Jason Motes at (See on sciencefiction.com) wrote an interesting article regarding the anticipated Justice League movie and the prospect of Christopher Nolan and Christian Balebeing involved. I just wanted to add my two cents about this and a JL movie in general.

I think a new Justice League movie is not dependent on using established works of Team Nolan/Bale or “Nale”. A truly good, not even great, JL movie would depend on a LOT of things going right. Frankly, if there is going to be a JL movie “done right”, I don’t see it happening before 2016. If Warner Bros. does not use the Marvel/Paramount model with a steady build up of individual successes over about five years, they need to figure out an equally effective long-term strategy.

The DC Comics Universe has a plethora of great stories to take from. Superman: Man of Steel seems to be the most logical place to start. I like the idea of replacing the Hal Jordan Green Lantern with John Stewart. But, I won’t go down the laundry list of what I think Warner Brothers should do. Although I’m optimistic that it can be done, I’ll just say that ALL the stars will need to be in alignment to produce a quality film that will make money. It will definitely be a huge challenge for the studio and whoever will be tapped to write and direct this film.

Who Could Pull It Off?: Rumors of who could play the 'Black Panther'

Who Could Pull It Off?: Rumors of who could play the 'Black Panther' | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it

In the article a post by Germain Lussier at  http://www.slashfilm.com/rumor-morris-chestnut-playing-marvels-black-panther/ He reports about rumers of Morris Chestnut possibly playing T''Challa (The Black Panther) in an possible Marvel Studios film. The Lussier reported that the rumor seems to have started when,

"Chestnut took to Twitter and Facebook Monday telling fans “It’s time to get familiar with the Black Panther character!” Just as the Internet began to pick up on the hint, he deleted the Tweet and Facebook posts."

While I would love to see a Black Panther movie, For me, the jury is still out on Chestnut playing the lead role. I've heard other names like Idris Elba thrown around, who is a much, much better actor than Chestnut. But I can't offer up any other possibilities at the moment.

The following are some comments that were made in one of my Facebook groups on the subject:

-"Yeah I could see Idris, Djimon Honsou, or Chiwetel Ejifor playing Black Panther. I don't know about Morris but I'd give it a chance."

-"I could not take Morris Chestnut seriously in a role with such gravitas."

-"I've always liked Chiwetel Ejiofor for T'Challa... can't remember what i saw him in... but i like his presence, and he CAN act....."

-"Find an unknown and just do the movie."

Regardless of who plays the potential role, its great to hear that Marvel Studios is even considering making the film.

Tools to Keep Netflix Movie Streaming From Getting Stale

Tools to Keep Netflix Movie Streaming From Getting Stale | Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Horror Movies and Films | Scoop.it

On the Sci-Fi Super Friends Podcast, we exclusively use this streaming service to watch, review and rate films. Some are gems, but a whole lot are "stinkers". Until now I just thought it might be a matter of luck to find something new that won't cause wailing and gnashing of teeth.

In this article, Jason Gilbert at the Huffington Post, put together a great list of tools for finding quality movies and shows to watch on Netflix streaming service:

1. A Better Queue - http://abetterqueue.com/

2. RottenTomatoes Netflix Filter -

3. InstantWatcher - http://instantwatcher.com/

4. InstantWatchDB - http://www.instantwatchdb.com/

5. The Pivot View - http://netflixpivot.cloudapp.net/#%24view%24=1&%24facet0%24=Rating/BWA5f

6. WhichFlicks - http://www.whichflicks.com/browse#/?watchNow=1&mpaa=15&sort=02

7. Streaming Soon - http://www.streamingsoon.com/p/newest-streams.html

I'll likely use one or more of these tools suggested by Gilbert to help find movies for veiwing. But it seems like a mixed blessing. The only flaw I see with these strategies is that, for us, our podcast often has a great time reviewing a "horribly bad" film. I'm afraid that the ability to find only the best in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror movies, would take a lot of the fun out of the podcast for us! Hell, I recently, picked a movie for review by literally flipping a coin. Perhaps I'll only use these tools for my own personal veiwing and not for the Sci-Fi Super Friends Podcast.
